SURREY – Police areurging motorists to slowdown in school zones – thekids are back in class aftersummer holidays.

The 30km/h school speedlimit is in effect from 8 a.m.to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Delta Police will be usingpatrols, volunteers andschool liaison units to clampdown on speeders.

“There will beconcentrated efforts on roadsafety issues throughoutDelta and all school zoneswill be primary target areas,”spokeswoman Sgt. SharleneBrooks said.

In Surrey, volunteersfrom Surrey RCMP’s SpeedWatch program, armedwith radar equipment andelectronic signs, will beout monitoring speedingin school zones. If you’recaught speeding, a policeofficer might be nearby toissue you a speeding ticket.

Besides slowing down, drivers are reminded torespect school bus flashinglights. Vehicles approachingfrom both directions muststop for school buses whentheir lights are flashing toensure kids get on and offthe bus in safety.

Parents are also beingurged to remind theirchildren about road safety.

Here are a few tips:– Remove your

headphones, put away yourcell phone, MP3 player orother gadgets when crossinga street so you can focusyour full attention on theroad and can see and heartraffic.

– Use designated crossingpoints and follow pedestriantraffic signs and signals.Make eye contact withdrivers, so you both knowyou see each other.

– Dress to be seen, especially in poor weather. In dark or bad weather, wearreflective material on clothesor backpacks.

Tanya Ponnan, manager of development for the Surrey Food Bank, shows off some of the potatoes harvested from God’s Little Acre, a farmproject that Surrey farmer Jas Singh has been working hard to develop.

Barbour says the training covers a widerange of issues, everything from basicssuch as timetables and finding classroomsto more serious issues like bullying andsubstance abuse.

The relationship between the mentorsand Grade 7 class starts in the fall. In latespring, as the school year draws to a close, mentors visit the elementary school andmake presentations.

The Lord Tweedsmuir mentorsare matched with students at GeorgeGreenaway Elementary.

Devika says she became a mentorbecause she wants to help the youngerstudents cope with the pressure toconform and to be a positive role model.

“I want the younger ones to know thatit’s OK to be yourself, that it’s OK to bedifferent.”

Sarah Brownlee, 15, is another memberof the mentor team. A victim of bullying

since Grade 3, she signed up as a mentorbecause she wanted to spare other studentssome of the same anguish.

Fifteen-year-old Vanessa Jakubowskicame to LTSS from Don Christianelementary. The sheer size of the highschool left her breathless.

“I walked through the doors andthought, ‘Wow, this is really big.’”

Just trying to get ready for the first ofhigh school, worrying about the rightclothes and hairstyle, caused anxiety, sheadmits.

“If I had this when I was in Grade 7, Iwould have felt a lot more calm,” she saysof the Bridges program.

Devika believes the program also helpsto steer new students away from fallingin with the wrong crowd and making badchoices.

“Without Bridges some of the kids we’rehelping could have gone down the wrongpath.”

DELTA – Now that it’s September, civicelection campaigns will start kicking intohigh gear, but those on the outside ofDelta council wanting in have already beenworking hard on the campaign trail.

Saying she wants the people of Delta tohave a real say in their community, formercouncillor Krista Engelland is takinganother shot at the mayor’s job in thisNovember’s election. She announced hercandidacy in May.

She’s been off council for three years aftervacating her seat in order to run againstincumbent Mayor Lois Jackson.

Engelland, 49, who was first elected tocouncil in 1993, finished second in the ‘08mayor’s race, although she beat Jackson atthe Tsawwassen polls.

This time around, Engelland, who’s beenattending community events and meetingpeople during the summer, said the moodseems to be one of residents wanting achange at municipal hall.

“People aren’t articulating specifics, butwhat people are saying is they do want achange in a broader context, and they’re

ready for that change,” she said.Engelland is part of a new electoral

organization called One Delta, which hasn’tannounced yet whether it will field a slateof other candidates or simply endorsecandidates who are like-minded.

Sylvia Bishop, meanwhile, who ran forthe vacant council seat in last year’s by-election, coming in second to Ian Paton, recently declared she’ll run for a council seatas an independent. In last year’s by-electionshe was endorsed by Engelland, but in theupcoming election Bishop hasn’t officiallyjoined One Delta.

Engelland noted, “People in Deltahave a very fierce passion about being anindependent, but being an independentmeans you can also still be part of a slate.

I think that time will still come. I thinkcandidates will come forward and they’llbe independent but they’ll be endorsed byslates, so that is another option.”

One Delta also plans to host three townhall meetings in the fall, Engelland said.

Engelland added the current mayor hasdrawn most of her support from NorthDelta but the mood in that community isshifting. She noted the formation of anothernew electoral organization called RenewDelta, formed by North Delta resident andbusiness owner Ranj Heer, is a signal thatpeople in that community also think itsabout time for a change.

Saying they already have more than 100members, Heer said her group plans to putout a call for those interested in running on

a Renew Delta slate. As far as Bishop’s campaign, she said she’s

taking nothing for granted, even thoughshe has a profile and garnered considerablesupport in the by-election.

Bishop also noted there seems to bedissatisfaction in North Delta. Trafficremains a big issue but there’s also “localizedpockets” of neighborhood issues, she said.

Neil Corbett is also running for a councilseat. He noted many communities nowoffer neighbourhood beautification grantsthat are available to residents, students, service clubs, community groups and smallbusinesses. There is no reason why Deltacannot create the same type of program,he said, stating these programs allowownership neighbourhoods and encourageneighbour participation and communityinvolvement.

Other candidates are expected to surfacenow that the summer months are over,

Coun. Heather King, meantime, alsoannounced her candidacy for mayor, whichmeans she’ll be vacating her seat to run forthe top job. All the other incumbents oncouncil, including Jackson, have indicatedthey’ll be running or will likely run.

SURREY – You might callthem the Lucky 13.

The 12 young men andone young woman – allunder age 21 and residentsof Richmond and Vancouver– are fortunate the quarter-million dollar cars they wereracing down Highway 99Wednesday afternoon havebeen impounded for onlyseven days, and the driversthemselves have only beenhit with six points and a$196 fine apiece.

Police received numerouscomplaints from motoriststhat these cars – Ferraris,Lamborghinis, Nissan GT-Rs, Maseratis, Mercedes,an Audi R8 and AstonMartin among them – hadbeen weaving in and outof traffic at speeds of upto 200 kilometres an hour, southbound on Highway 99just before rush hour.

“Complaints startedcoming in from the tunnel,”said Supt. Norm Gaumont,RCMP officer in charge oftraffic enforcement for theLower Mainland. The 13were caught after the fact, inSurrey and White Rock.

“From what we cangather, they were going for ameal and this was I guess away for them to have somefun. What’s really disturbingis this happened at peaktime, traffic time.”

Gaumont said their

penalty would have beenmuch stiffer had they beencaught on video, radar, orif a police officer had seenthem racing.

“I know there’s a lot ofdisappointment, wonderingwhy we only charged themwith an offence of $196.They fact of the matter is,we have to look at all theevidence we have and whatwe’re able to prove,” he said.“That’s why we’ve chargedthem with driving withoutdue consideration for thepublic.”

Gaumont noted that onlyone of the cars was drivenby its registered owner. Sixof the drivers were newdrivers and one of the 13had no license.

He called their lack ofdriving experience coupledwith these high-poweredcars a “recipe for disaster.”

“We’re very lucky nobodylost control, nobody washurt or killed.”

The cars have beenimpounded for seven days, after which time the ownerscan pay a fee to get their carsback.

Among the 13 cars,together worth well over $2million, is a 2007 Ferrari599, two 2010 LamborghiniGallardos, a 2009Lamborghini Gallardo, a2009 Audi R8, a 2012 NissanGT-R, two 2010 NissanGT-Rs, two 2010 MaseratiTurismos, a 2011 MercedesSL63, a 2011 Mercedes SLS,and a 2005 Aston [email protected]

SURREY – At God’s Little Acre, there’s anestimated 70,000 pounds of potatoes thatneed to be harvested for the city’s poor.

The South Surrey farm, an initiativestarted by local farmer Jas Singh, has a spacethat is being utilized to grow vegetables forthe Surrey Food Bank and other charitableorganizations in need.

Singh initially estimated there were goingto be 50,000 pounds of potatoes yielded, but it’s now looking like there will be about70,000 pounds.

“He has grown these potatoes for thepurpose of giving them to the food bank. He’s strictly giving them away,” said TanyaPonnan, manager of development for theSurrey Food Bank.

“Fresh produce is one of the hardestthings to come by. It’s very important.Canned goods are great because they have

a longer shelf life but produce is somethingwe don’t always get.”

Volunteer groups have been at the farmwith Ponnan and Singh for the last week, helping harvest the massive amounts ofpotatoes that need to come out of theground.

And they need a lot more help, Ponnansaid, adding that they hope to get all thepotatoes out of the ground by the end ofSeptember.

Most of the harvesting sessions arehappening at 5 p.m. and they are looking forvolunteer groups of about seven people ormore.

Ponnan said that even if people don’thave a group, individuals can call the foodbank and help out when another group isscheduled to be harvesting.

A large portion of the potatoes are set tobe stored on the farm site for a fee.

Ponnan said that what the Surrey FoodBank can’t use, it will donate to other localfood banks.

To get involved, contact the Surrey FoodBank at 604-581-5443.

SURREY – Maybe the best way to apotential customer’s heart is through his gastank.

FlightNetwork.com had that conceptdown to a science Friday morning whenit took over the Otter Co-op gas station inFraser Heights for a few hours to slash theprice of gas by 50 cents a litre, in an effort topromote its own price drop protection plan.

Customers were lined up for nearly twoblocks already when the digital sign changedfrom 136.9 to 86.9 at 8 a.m.

“I don’t know if we’ve ever seen that pricefor gas in this century,” said Jamil al Jabri, marketing manager for FlightNetwork.com

“We’re hoping to see at least 400 carstoday.”

It was a conservative estimate, consideringgas prices usually climb just before a longweekend.

They said the gas sale would continueuntil 20,000 litres are sold.

“It should be like this all the time,” said

Jason, a Guildford resident who heard aboutthe sale on the radio and came down to topup his tank.

Workers in orange vests guided motoriststhrough the station, at the corner of 167thStreet and 104th Avenue.

One stood beside a large sign: “There’salways that guy who paid less. Be that guy.”

Clark hasfew optionsfor teachers

The school year isbeginning withmore uncertainty

and tension than in recentyears, and the teachers andthe government are both toblame for that.

Now, there likely won’tbe much hard evidencefor some weeks that thisyear is any different, butas time goes by, parentsare undoubtedly going tobecome upset over whatwill likely be a deterioratingsituation in variousclassrooms.

The B.C. Teachers’Federation and its employer, the B.C. Public SchoolsEmployers Association, haveso far showed absolutelyzero ability to bargain a newcollective agreement.

The BCTF has put on thetable somewhat ludicrousdemands that are so far outof touch with reality that itwould be almost comical ifthey didn’t pose a threat tothe quality of education.

And the BCPSEA, at leastaccording to the BCTF,wants concessions that areunreasonable. Neither side

seems to have an ability tochange or soften its position, and so they remain stuckmiles and miles apart.

The BCPSEA costs out theteachers’ union demandsfor an improved benefitspackage at an eye-popping$2 billion.

Any wage increase – theBCTF wants parity withAlberta and Ontario, whichtranslates to a hike of morethan 20 per cent – is on topof that massive amount ofmoney.

The BCTF points out theemployer (i.e. the provincialgovernment) is doingnothing to address problemsassociated with large classsizes and more particularlythe composition of thoseclasses.

The fact a teachers’contract has been imposedby the legislature a numberof times may help explainthe lack of real bargainingthat occurs in these contracttalks. Why bargain if thegovernment simply imposesa new contract, the thinkingmay go on both sides.

However, anotherproblem appears to be theBCTF’s insistence that itconsult its membershipevery time it makes a majorchange to its bargainingposition. This doesn’thappen in other unions, and

it helps lock the bargainingprocess into a kind ofparalysis.

In any event, the jobaction by teachers willbe minor at first, with noimpact on the classroom. But by November, when thefirst report cards are to besent home, things may get alittle stickier.

And if teachers eventuallyrefuse to coach sports teamsor supervise school clubs, parental anxiety will beginto soar.

And this raises aninteresting question.

Now that PremierChristy Clark has officiallyannounced the legislaturewill resume sitting inOctober, will a legislatedteachers’ contract beimposed earlier than firstthought?

Conventional thinkingsuggests the teachers willcontinue to ramp up their

job action until the spring, when an all-out strike couldoccur. A strike is unlikelyto occur before schoolboard elections this fall, lest negative public opinionto one cost BCTF-friendlytrustees their jobs.

Winter follows soon after, and no one wants to walk apicket line in bad weather. This takes us to the spring, probably April or May, fora walkout. The legislaturewould be in session at thetime, so a legislated contractcould be imposed then.

However, it will beinteresting to see if the Clarkgovernment launches a pre-emptive strike before thingsget really bad in the schoolsystem between Novemberand the spring, and move toimpose a contract in timefor the first report cards tobe distributed.

Meanwhile, the Clarkgovernment may also want

to give the school systema break on another front:ending the requirementof school districts to paylarge sums of money tothe Pacific Carbon Trustbecause schools emitgreenhouse gases.

This involves millions ofdollars being sapped fromthe public school systemand then being given toprivate companies. Thisscheme is a holdover fromformer Premier GordonCampbell’s determinationfor B.C. to lead the world infighting climate change.

The new premier canscrap the requirement thatschools (and hospitals) bepart of this questionableprogram that obviouslyneeds a re-think.

Such a move would be apositive step for the publicschool system, which isgoing to find itself miredin a sea of negativity for along time as kids return tothe classroom. Just how longremains to be seen.

I’ve been getting up early three or fourdays a week these last few weeks. Thedawn light is still grey and diffuse

when I drag myself out of bed, but I get upanyway.

I really love going for bike rides. Wait, letme qualify that. I do not love riding in coldrain, sleet, hail, freezing temperatures, orblustery wind.

I’ve ridden in all of those (hail makesan alarming noise on the top of a plastichelmet) so I speak from experience. Butwhen the weather is just right, it’s myfavourite form of exercise.

For me, it’s actually a lot of fun, unlikejogging, which is an inexpensive form oftorture, or yoga, which is an expensive formof torture.

You may recall that the weather earlier

this May – and June and July – was less thanideal. For many weeks in a row, the westwind and his buddies decided it would befunny to channel every rain cloud fromthe North Pacific directly over the LowerMainland.

But the last couple of weeks, the sun hascome up, the clouds have burned off, andthe days have turned clear. The morningsare cool but not cold, the pavement is dry.

So I’m cramming in as much bike ridingas I can. I’m tiring myself out a bit with allthis riding.

But I can’t stop. Because there’s a voice inthe back of my mind that keeps remindingme to carpe the darned diem. ’Cause thediem is fleeting.

Make no mistake, we are on the downhillslope. The days are getting shorter, thenights longer. I saw a few trees with a tint oforange in the leaves the other day. Autumnis on the way.

And then we’ll be back to rain, anddarkness, and that moment in Februarywhen we snap and sacrifice a Mrs.Butterworth bottle on the altar of the Shiny

Pancake God, praying that he brings backthe sun. Or maybe that’s just me.

The whole idea of seizing the day getsmore frantic if you actually think aboutwhat you can miss by sitting in front of theTV, or sleeping in every morning.

I missed the Perseid meteor shower thisyear. I think I saw one shooting star last year.

Think about what a shooting star is. Ameteor is a piece of the solar system that’sbeen swirling around the sun for hundredsof millions of years.

Yet thanks to its unavoidable meetingwith the upper atmosphere of Earth, ittumbles into our gravity well, burningbrightly for just a moment after uncountedcenturies spent in the cold of space. All wesee, if we see it, is a streak of white light. It’sthere; it’s gone.

How much more wondrous is it that weevolved the ability to see this – our brainsare complex enough to understand whata meteor is, even though they’re made ofwhat amounts to little more than chemicallycomplex electrified Jell-O – which seesthe outside world through cameras made

of more Jell-O. And yet, we can see andcomprehend an annual shower of shootingstars.

So this year I stayed inside and missed it.Normally, I just brush it off, thinking that

I’ll try to catch it next year. Then I realizethat, even if I dedicated my life to seeingevery Perseid shower every year, and if I liveto be 100, I’ll still see less than 70.

Fewer, if it’s cloudy some years.I’m going to die someday. Hopefully,

a long time from now, in human terms, but in the span of the universe, in themeasurement of orbits around our sun, it’snot going to be that long before I’m dust.

And that’s the real reason to set the alarmand get up and do it. Get on the bike, playwith the dog, read a great book, talk to anold friend, go on an adventure. Jog, if youmust.

Time’s arrow is flying, one direction only,no second shot.

A 3-D salute to theatre’s 10 years

Student artists workon “Theatre of theSoul,” a sculpture-like mural that willeventually be mountedin the lobby of BellPerforming ArtsCentre in Surrey. Therendering is picturedat left (Photo above:KEVIN HILL)

SURREY — A massive 3-D mural designedby a student artist explores rich culturalthemes spanning East and West.

Led by artist Michele Miguel, a teamof young artists has spent the summer atSullivan Heights Secondary School creatingthe 10-foot-by-14-foot multi-media mural.

Surrey art teacher Marc Pelech, director ofthe project, says the artwork is probably themost complex and ambitious project he hasguided over the past 20 years.

He describes the piece as “a fusion ofpattern, texture and materials.” The mix ofmaterials that shape the piece includes clay, wood, paints, plaster, wire, cardboard andfiberglass.

“Just looking at its unique materials andthe 3-D nature of the piece, its cross-culturalthemes, sheer complexity and potentialbeauty — it’s extraordinary,” Pelech says ofthe mural, still a work in progress.“Ostensibly,it’s more of a sculpture than a mural.”

The mural celebrates the 10th anniversaryof the Bell Performing Arts Centre, butit will also be a key piece in the “Days ofthe Dead” exhibit, which opens at SurreyMuseum on Nov. 15.

In partnership with the Surrey schooldistrict, the exhibit will also feature worksby other students. Their challenge was toproduce pieces that reflect the rites and ritualsof ancestor worship, an important day on thecalendar for many cultures.

Miguel’s superbly fitting name for themural is “Theatre of the Soul.”

The 18-year-old artist, a student at EmilyCarr University of Art and Design, admitsthat capturing the theatrical spirit of the BellPerforming Arts Centre in the design, andmaking it relevant to the “Days of the Dead”exhibit at the same time, posed a challenge.

In developing the design, Miguel was usedto looking at the image on her laptop. Afterthe team made the first mock-up, the scaleand scope of the project dawned on her forthe first time.

“I thought, Wow, this is going to takea lot of work. I knew it was going to bechallenging,” she says.

Pieces of the mural are scattered about in theschool’s art studio, as each student involved inthe project works on different aspects of themural, which will be assembled later.

Despite the largely white surfaces — tobe eventually painted in vivid tones — themural is still a vision of complexity. Itfeatures a female face, “a mask” in the centre, the iconic symbol for theatre, with profileson either side of it. Sweeping arcs engravedwith astrological signs frame the visage. Onearc features astrological signs and the otherone is etched with Chinese astrological signs, all painstakingly hand cut by Miguel. Faintelements of a dream catcher pay homage toNorth American Indian heritage. Some ofthe patterning in the piece is reminiscent ofCeltic knots.

“It’s so dense and rich with differentkinds of meanings and sub-meanings,”

Pelech observes. He believes the mural meets the critical test

for quality art because it invites interpretation.“Some might say it’s in the fantasy genre,

others might say it’s new age,” he says.To Pelech’s eyes, the mural is replete with

classical motifs and patterns. The mural, which will weigh close to 1,500

pounds once assembled, will be transportedto the Surrey Museum in segments and puttogether on site. Once the exhibit closes, themural will be mounted in the lobby of the

Bell Performing Arts Centre, its permanenthome.

Funded by Human Resources DevelopmentCanada summer program, the mural costabout $20,000 to produce and took well over1,000 hours of work to design and complete.

As she reflects on her creation, Miguelacknowledges that she’s pleased with theresults.

“Yeah, this is a really special experience,” shesays.

SURREY – One-acre gardens are common, but it’s not socommon to see a one-acre garden on a rooftop.

That’s what residents will have at The Summit House inMorgan Crossing, a new development.

“We have community gardens, where people can planttheir own vegetables, herbs, that kind of thing,” said TaraFluet, sales manager for the development.

A chunk of the total garden space is allocated for residentsto plant their own food.

“We’ve also got a sun tanning area, we’ve got a fire pitarea, we’ve got a barbecue area complete with tables, chairsand umbrellas. Not to mention all the flowers and gardens.”

Jordan Ninkovich, sales manager for Steve Nash SportsClub Morgan Crossing, has put his name down on one ofthe units.

“Especially as an animal lover, it’s great that you can justwalk your dog through the gardens.

“When you step out onto the gardens, there’s a differentfeeling than if you’re shopping in Morgan Crossing. It feelslike two different places.”

He said it feels like he’s away from the “hustle and bustle”of Morgan Crossing, yet it’s still at his fingertips.

Ninkovich said the community garden space allocated forresidents to plant food is also a neat concept.

“I’ll be honest, I don’t have a green thumb, I don’t think. But I think it’s very unique. I’m actually kind of excited tostart to grow some things.

“We know all about organic fresh fruits and vegetables, soto be able to grow some of that yourself is great. And to nothave to travel anywhere when you don’t have a lot of spaceor property to do it yourself, is very accommodating.”

It may be called the Vancouver MetroSoccer League, but all of the circuit’s mostcherished silverware currently resides inSurrey.

On the eve of the 2011-12 men’s premiersoccer season, Newton’s ICST Pegasus andCloverdale’s Surrey United Firefighters arefeeling the heat as the rest of the VMSLgears up to separate them from their hard-won prizes.

The team everybody has in their crosshairs is Pegasus after the Horsemenovercame a slow start in 2010 and caughtfire at the end, culminating with a win overColumbus in the Provincial Cup final.

Now Pegasus must defend that honourwhile juggling the demands of preparingto represent British Columbia at thenational championships in Montreal onThanksgiving weekend in October.

“It’s going to be a lot more difficult forus this year, we aren’t going to sneak up onanybody,” said Pegasus coach Rob Reed. “Alot of odd things happened to us early lastyear and right now we’re really focused ongetting off to a strong start. We have to workhard and get some good results early — notjust for the points in the standings, but alsoto prepare for nationals.

“We all know that there’s nothing sweeterthan beating the provincial champions

— we know we felt that way when we playedthe provincial champions and now that weare the champions, we know everybody elsewill be putting in their best effort to knockus off. We have the bull’s eye on our jerseythis year and that will be a good motivatorfor us to play hard every week.”

Meanwhile across town in Cloverdale, archrival Surrey United Firefighters arelooking to atone for two years of unfinishedbusiness.

Last year, Surrey United’s season endedin frustration with a semifinal loss inthe Provincial Cup tourney. Surrey wonthe premier league title and the VMSL’sImperial Cup playdowns but came upempty in the Provincial Cup semifinalsagainst Columbus. Instead of havinga Surrey Derby to determine the B.C.championship, the Firemen had to watchas their rivals celebrated a Provincial Cupvictory.

“The focus is a bit different this year whenit comes to our goals,” said Surrey coach

Hurricanes join DeltaPremier soccer

Niall Thompson. “I’d be lying if I said Ididn’t want to win everything but this yearour goal is simply to win the Provincial Cup.The league title is always important becauseit’s a reflection of your consistency but atthe end of the day, it doesn’t give us the cupthat we want — the championship thatpushes us toward the ultimate test which isthe national championship tournament.”

Thompson added that while threeveterans from last year’s team — RizalGanief, Cam Wilson and Brad Peetoom— have departed the club, they have beenreplaced by talented youngsters fromSurrey’s club system.

Surrey United and ICST Pegasus arejoined in the VMSL premier division byanother local rival, albeit one with a newlook. Newton’s Punjab Hurricanes acquittedthemselves well in the second half of the2010-11 campaign, but the club’s strugglesearlier in the season proved costly. Despitestrong showings in both the Imperial Cupand the Provincial Cup tournaments, the Hurricanes were relegated to the firstdivision — along with Akal and the SerbianWhite Eagles — in the final weeks of theregular schedule.

While the Eagles and Akal have indeeddeparted the premier ranks, the Hurricanesare still around after an off-season mergerwith nearby Delta United. Blending theyouth and speed of the Hurricanes with thesavvy veteran leadership of Delta, the newentry will compete this season as the DeltaHurricanes.

“It’s a pretty good fit for both clubs,” saidHurricanes manager Billy Dhaliwal on theclub’s new home. “For us, going back to firstdivision would have been a step backwards. We were competitive at the premier levellast year and it wouldn’t have been good forus to go down — we would probably losea few players and our overall level of playwould suffer. Delta is a very structured teamand with our young guys, we bring a certainamount of flair that they were lookingfor. Plus they have established coaching inSteve Millar and depth that we didn’t havelast year. We’ve been training together andeverything seems to be meshing togetherreally well.”

The VMSL premier season kicks off onSeptember 10 with a series of games indowntown Vancouver before reverting toa regular rotation of fixtures at the clubs’home fields the following week.

Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzlewill have you hookedfrom the moment yousquare off, so sharpenyour pencil and putyour Sudoku savvy

to the test!

Here's How It Works:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill eachrow, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numberswill appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
