The Mount Airy High School gradu-ates of 1941 are still getting together
each month to enjoy lunch and visit witheach other.
It was 69 years ago that this close-knitgroup received its diplomas. About 40classmates, from the original 100, are stillliving. Many live out-of-town, so it’smostly the local folks who show up for theluncheons.
They learned this week that classmateEd Jackson had passed away in New York.Ronella Holmes Goad spoke with his fam-ily and expressed condolences from theMAHS group.
Among those present were Zeo PackStone, Margaret Hennis Taylor, MarieLewis Judson, Edith Midkiff McPeak, Es-telle Greenwood Belton, Ann BookerHolyfield, Ronella Holmes Goad, with herdaughter, Mary Ellen Goad, Betty JonesSparger, Christine Webb Beamer, CarolineBoyles Kirkman and Mary Jacobs Jenkins.
Special guests were Hallie Tayman,widow of Kent Tayman, and friend, IlaChilton. Hallie resides in Idaho.

Surprise dinner party honors Kathy Chilton
Kathy Chilton is surprised with a birthday dinner on Jan. 31 at Lone Star Restau-rant. Her birthday was Feb. 1. William Smith was among the 20 some guestspresent for the occasion.

RidgeCrest residents exhibit art work
RidgeCrest Retirement Community hosted a Wine & Cheese Social and Art Show on Jan. 20.The event showcased selected pieces of art from RidgeCrest residents, Gene McLendon and
Gladys Owens.Mrs. McLendon became interested in transparent watercolor in the early 1970s while living in
Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. She was active in the Goldcoast Watercolor Society and taught in the BrevardCounty School System. After moving to Roswell, N.M., in 1980, she continued to paint at the Mu-seum and Art Center. A Japanese art teacher opened up the world of Sumi-e painting, Japanese inkpainting, and she began specializing in the medium. Mrs. McLendon moved to RidgeCrest in 2003and enjoyed painting until her unofficial retirement in late 2009.
“After my retirement from teaching in 1971 from the Mount Airy City Schools,” Mrs. Owensstated, “I decided to do something to take up my time. I took art courses in Pilot Mountain.” Whenasked her favorite subject to paint, she replied, “Scenes, especially things around my home in PilotMountain.” Mrs. Owens said that she continued to paint until her declining eyesight prevented herfrom being able to mix colors. She has called RidgeCrest her home since 2002.

awards at the 2009 NCRSP State Convention inRaleigh. SCRSP won the Unit of ExcellenceAward for Category B — locals with 100 or moremembers. SCRSP has a long legacy of strong, positiveleadership and those past district and local officersand executive council members have built the or-ganization into a “unit of excellence.” Membershipis open to any retired employee from the three Sur-ry systems, as well as education employees whomay have retired elsewhere and settled in Surry.
Anita Goins, co-chair of the Community Partic-ipation Committee, reports that with about one-fourth of the SCRSP members reporting, 8,533hours of volunteer services to the local communityschools, churches, nursing facilities and civic or-ganizations were recorded. These hours representmore than $173,999 of in-kind contributions to thecommunity.
