Based on available information the structure at 3439 Laurel Grove Road in Federalsburg, MD., known as the Community Civic League of Federalsburg is not eligible for the Maryland Register of Historic Properties. Although records indicate that the original portion of the current structure was constructed in 1918 for use as a 'colored' school almost no historic fabric remains of the original structure. Subsequent additions and alterations dating from the 1950' s, late 1960 's, 1970' s, and early 1990 's have further compromised the historic integrity of the structure. Fire damaged the building in 1968 and in the early 19 70's.

Denton, Md. Aug. 5, .1957

The Board of F.ducation met in regular session Tuesday, Aug. 5, 10:00 A.M. Mrs. J. t. Stowell, President, presiding. Mr. J. Virgil Moore, vice- president, Mr. I. T. Saulsbury, and Mr. B. C. ~illis, Secretary, were present .

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. A financial report was presented which indicated the total receipts

for the year were ~202,132 . 46, and the total expenditures were ~202,055 . 26, leaving a balance of $79.20 .

A report covering the t.P.A. project and addition to the Preston School was presented indicating that expenditures to date totaled $12,287 . 62; that the progress on the building v;as satisfactory, and that the building would probably be completed, approximately, September first.

Bids were opened for the installation of curtains in the new build­ing at Prestgn. The Board selected~Graytex material because of its high quality, and awarded the contract for installation to Mr . A. v:. Brumbaugh at a cost of &244.75.

Bids were opened for an additional bus route to be operated to Preston School. Five bids were received as follows:

After carefully considering the character of all individuals the contract was awarded to Towers Todd at his bid of $950 for next year.

The Board gave consideration to the purchase of additional equipment for the home economics department of Caroline High School. After caref'ul consideration they decided to have installed two (2) electric stoves in lieu of purchasing new coal oil or gas stoves.

A report was presented~e Board's attorney, J . De\'ieese Carter, relative to the Board of Education's titles to various unused school prop­erties . The Board decided to advertise and sell all unu~ed properties, June 1938 .

Four bids were received for placing v:indov1 guards or screens over the \ii.ndows in the school auditoriums at Preston and Greensboro. After con­sideration of these bids the bid of Dietrich Bros., submitted through the Nuttle Lwnber & Coal Co ., was accepted. Cost of the equipment and material to be $500, with an adjustment to be made on an additional cost for install­ing same.

A reporl was::made to the Board of Education regarding the insurance in f-orce now on aJ:l school buildings fii tlie county. !i'te Boarii f'.elt; that adequate coverage was placed on=e:ll buildings. The .report follons:

No further action was taken r1ith respect to scholarships. A letter received from Dr. A. S. Cook ~as read stating the report of the

Medical Commission of the State Teachers' P.~+;~e~~nt System recommended that Miss Mary E. Kemp be issued a teacherts certificatefor three years because of her improved physical condition.

A letter of thanks was read from Mrs· Ruth D. Garey expressing her appreciation for the award of the Charlotte Hall scholarship to her son.

The resignation of Miss Anna Frances Seward was accepted with much regret.

It was noted that two vacancies still exist ~ agriculture teacher and home economics teacher.

The Board approved the sale of the clock in the Friendship School to Mrs. Schmick.

All transportation contracts not previously approved were approved and signed.

The Board of Education met in regular session September lst,10 A. M., with Mrs . Blanche N. Stowell, President, presiding. Mr. I. T. Saulsbury and Mr. B. C. \1;illis, Secretary, present.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved . A financial report prepared from this office for submission to the

State Board of Education v1as gone over. The following resignations were accepted: Miss Anna M. Richardson,

Greensboro high school; Mr. Peter F. Hoffman, Caroline high school; Miss Irene Greenage, colored, Castle Hall school.

The f ollo~ing teachers were nominated by the Superintendent and their nominations were approved by the Board of Education: Miss Fr2.llces Silcox, Greensboro high school; Mr. James G. Cullen, Caroline high school; Miss Nellie Gaiter, Castle Hall school.

Miss Katherine Spies, Caroline County scholarship student \',estern Maryland College, resigned her scholarship due to marriage. The Board ordered a re-examination given after due notice was given of the scholar­ship being available . Due notice was given and fourteen (14) applicants for the scholarship took the examination .

The results of the ~estern Maryland scholarship examination for girls were presented to the Board . Number one (1) in the examination, Miss Ruth E. Taylor, of Gree.nsboro '"as recollllilended for the scholarship Senator Davis appeared before the Board and approved the recommendation. The ~cholarship was therefore awarded to Miss Taylor for tile remaining last two years of her college course at \~estern Maryland.

The school transportation insurance was approved and awarded to the tlarleysville Mutual Casualty Company of Harleysville, Pa.

The Board approved the placing of curtains in certain schools as follows : Caroline High School, c0st $70; Denton Primary School, cost $95; Lockerman High School, cost $97 . 50; Preston High School, cost $75. 50.

Af'ter investigation it was found that the chauffeur for ~frs . O. LBaker' s bus, r!r. Ross, is satisfactory.

The school transportation contract of f4r. C. J . Kern v;as approved. Teachers ' contracts for Miss Cerolyn C. Evans, Miss Frances Silcox,

and Mr. Harold B. Kilheffer were approved. The Board approved the awarding of the contract for certain plumbing

repair work at Preston to Mr . Leroy J. Nichols. An additional project to be submitted to the v •• P.A. covering water­

proofing at the Ridgely and Greensboro schools was approved . The list of Trustees for white schools covering next school year
