Silwani block is located in the central Madhya Pradesh about 135 Km from the city of Bhopal, the
state capital. Silwani block has a tribal population of 3!. Most tribals li"e in hilly and forest
areas. #ribal backwardness and e$ploitation are pre"alent. #here are no urban areas or industries
in the entire block% the bi&&est town is Silwani with a population of 15,. '&riculture is the most
important occupation of the people but (! of the culti"ated area does not ha"e proper irri&ation
facilities. Ma)ority of the tribals are small farmers with fi"e or less acres of land that is mostly not
arable. 15! of the tribals do not own land at all but depend on daily wa&es and collection of minor
forest produce for their li"elihood. *attle+rearin& is another source of income. #he literacy rate of
the area is about !. #he le"el of literacy and education amon& the tribal is lower than that of
the other sections of the society. #he facilities for hi&her education are "ery limited. #here is only
one 'rts *olle&e in the whole area and the faculty in the colle&e is also "ery limited. Similarly the
facilities for technical education are practically absent.
-ur partner /-, 0SS has been workin& in the area for many years to promote education of
tribal children. 2"ery year 15+5 tribal students from 0SS supported institutions pass 1th
/rade. 4n addition, 5+ students pass 1th /rade from the fi"e hi&h schools in the area. '
similar number of children also complete 1th /rade e"ery year. ue to "arious reasons, ! of
the tribal students discontinue their studies after middle school and ! after 1th &rade. 6ess
than 5! of the tribal students who pass 1th &rade &o for a hi&her education. #he situation of
&irls in tribal community is worse. ue to the traditional practices, &irls do not continue education
beyond primary school. ue to lack of education, they are not aware of their ri&hts and
responsibilities. So, there is a dire need to pro"ide some employment opportunities to the literate
and also semi+literate youth of the area.
