Are you male or female?
• male;
• female.
How old are you?
How many times per day do you
test yourself?
Thinking about the number of
times you test and record your
BGL’s, carbs’ and insulin, can you
describe for me any frustrations
that you experience in relation to
your daily activities?
How often do you report your test
results to your endocrinologist?
If there were a simpler method
of reporting your test results, how
would that change your daily life?
Do you have a smartphone?
How do you record your BGL’s,
carbohydrates and your insulin
doses?
What are those periods in a day
that you test yourself?
• when you wake up;
• before breakfast;
• before lunch;
• before dinner;
• before bed;
• other, please specify.
Thinking about your daily routine
and managing your diabeties,
can you tell me about your goals
realted to your health?
Are you Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic?
What is your current insulin
treatment method?
• needle;
• insulin pen;
• insulin pump; or
• other, please specify.
PERSONA
CLANCY 28: SINGLE
GOALS:• “To stay within a healthy range. So I do tend to run a bit high.”
• “To manage it (my diabetes) long term.”
PAIN POINTS:• Dislikes having to record her BGL three times a day.
• “I think just having to stop and like yeah, doing it and having to
record stuff, it’s too hard.”
• Half the apps you download are for Americans, and you can’t
change way it records your levels, it’s really dumb.”
RECORD KEEPING:• 3 of 5 people interviewed didn’t record their levels.
• 1 of 5 people kept partial records.
• 1 of 5 people maintained continous records of their levels.
Clancy was only diagnosed six years ago as a Type 1 Diabetic and so everything for her, in the
management of her diabetes, is still a bit of an on going battle to keep her BGL range within
a certain range. Whereas most diabetics see an endocrinologist every six months, Clancy has
quaterly visits. In the interview with Clancy it really stood out that, like everyone, she is time
poor and really needs simpler.
“I don’t really record my levels. I suppose I’m just lazy really about it, so, yeah. I go through
fazes where for a month I’ll be realy strict just to keep an eye on where I’m at and write
everything down. I think just being on my own, I don’t have a laptop, so trying to stop my
daily routine and come back sometime to record my levels is just too hard. It doesn’t take
long, but yeah, I still have to keep it in my mind to do it (record my levels). I probably should
just download something on my phone or something to record my levels.
I don’t test it when I wake up, I just take my insulin and I I’ll probably test it (BGL’s) before
lunch because that’s when I’m begginning to run low and then I test again about 4:00 in the
afternoon because I’ve run low again, so I test it then. I don’t test it again until just before I go
to bed because I’m a bit unpredictable before bed and I don’t get to sleep very easily.”
“I probably should just download something on my phone or something to record my levels.”

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Diabeties doesn’t age discriminate, it complicates it. Trying to keep up with everything
in the day to day, as well as doing the things you have to do, is hard. For some, it can be
much harder.
Eat well, try and exercise. Don’t get stressed. Give yourself enough insulin, not too much,
watch out for hypos. Test your BGL’s before breakfast, before lunch, before you exercise,
after you exercise, before dinner, before you go to bed. Keep BGL’s within target,
how many carbohydrayes you eat, work out how much insulin to take and then,
record it all. Diabetics need simpler.
COMPETITOR ANALYSIS
GLUCOSE BUDDY • compatible only up to iOS 7.0;
• very clunky UI, although simple;
• can’t record multiple log entries
for BGL’s, carbs and insulin;
• can set app to send notifications
if the user hasn’t logged any
details for an event;
• recorded data is difficult to
interpret;
• iTunes user review:
“No mmol/L option? I can’t use
this because it only records in
the mg/dL measurement.
Disappointing.”
iBGSTAR• compatible only up to iOS 8.0;
• bad colour contrast throughout
app, especially in report tables;
• not able to add extra events
beyond preset periods.
• reports can be emailed manually
through app;
• iTunes user review:
“User Hostile. Sorry, cannot
recommend. I loved the concept,
however they failed to deliver
on performance and the device
continually failed to sync when
connected to the iPhone 4S.”
DARIO • UI and UX is very intuitive
and clean;
• uses a slider to add BGL with a
live colour reading to show if you
are within range;
• gives an estimated HbA1c;
• iTunes user review:
“Slidebar. I find it very hard and
tiresome to use a slidebar
instead of just entering your
readings. I really don’t like it
at all. Change that and I might
use the program again”
mySUGAR DIABETES DIARY • Overall UI and UX is intuitive
and clean;
• has gamification to encourage
users to complete daily report
periods;
• can export records as PDF, CSV
and Excel documents
• only records BGL’s as mg/dL;
• iTunes user review:
“Fun little app. Fun little app
to track food and sugar levels.
Customisation options are good,
but reporting and finding
hidden options could be made
more intuitive”

CONTENT STRATEGY
WHO:Everyone needs simpler. Type 1 diabetics
really need simpler to make managing,
recording and reporting their life easier.
HOW:With a calendar as the main interface,
the user can select the event they are
testing for and record all information
required for automatic reporting to their
edocrinologist by a certain date.
WHAT:We will be there to help and guide you,
we won’t be an angry bear. We talk with
you, not down. We are warm and caring,
not stiff. We are myBGL.
WHERE: myBGL will be an app available for
iOS and Android mobile devices.WHY:There is a gap in the marketplace for a
diabetic app that records and reports
blood glucose levels that is intuitive.
Too many apps only record BGL’s with a
particular unit of measurement, which
may be wrong depending on your
geolocation.
WHEN:myBGL will remain current across mobile
devices as operating software for iOS
and Android is updated,
USER WANTS TO HAVE BGL, CARBOHYDRATE INTAKE AND TOTAL INSULIN UNITS AUTOMATICALLY RECORDED AND SENT TO THEIR ENDOCINOLOGIST ON A PRESET DATE User enters:
• Endocrinologist’s full name;
• email; and
• chooses date from calendar
when they next have to report
their records.
USER WANTS TO CHOOSE HOW THEY RECORD BGL’S User can choose to record BGL’s
in either:
• UK standard i.e. mmol/L; or
• US standard i.e. mg/dL.
USER IS TIME POOR AND SOMETIMES FORGETS TO RECORD THEIR BGL’S ETC., SO THEY WANTED TO BE REMINDED User can chooses:
• how many times daily they
typically test for their BGL
levels; and
• do they want to receive a
notification if they missed
an event.
- notification will be sent two
hours after a missed event.

USABILITY TESTING
A’S:Q’S:
1. “The sign up was pretty comprehensive, I can see why it needs
to be and that’s a good thing.”
2. “It’s really good, it’s a lot better than some other apps I know of,
where you have to go in three times just do one test.”
3. “I liked it, and I can see my BGL target range too.”
4. “It was very easy, but there was one bit where the log in with the
walkthrough screens looked like the walkthrough screens in the
account set up.”
5. “No, everything looks really good and easy to use. Is there a way to
record other appointments like diabetic educators?”
1. This is your first ime using the myBGL app, can you
please sign up?
2. It’s the 14th of January, you’ve just woken up and are
about to have breakfast, I’d like you to record your
BGL levels.
3. You recorded some test events for the 14th January,
I’d like you now to view your aveages for the day.
4. It is intuitive?
5. Is anything missing?
IN CLASS USABILITY TESTING OF POP PROTOTYPE
Deeper analytical usability testing within
the UX class found difficencies which
were not identified in the first round of
usability testing.
One noteable area for improvement
was found.
1. User records three test results per
recording period:
• BGL’s;
• carbs; and
• insulin.
When the user has recorded all results a
save button loads to save the test event
and they are then logged out.
Problem:
Between saving the event and being
logged out, there is no confirmation that
the records have been saved.
Solution:
Introduce a confirmation screen
confirming that records have been saved.
