Sustainability

Definition

For humans, sustainability is the long-term maintenance of responsibility, which

has environmental, economic, and social dimensions, and encompasses the

concept of stewardship , the responsible management of resource use.

What I won’t talk about

Not an expert, not a scientist, not a tree hugger…….

• Carbon tax

• Global warming

• Climate scientism

• My opinions

Make business sense.

"Business is the only mechanism on the planet today powerful enough to produce the changes necessary to reverse global environmental and social degradation."

-Paul Hawken - www.paulhawkin.com

• Data on consumer attitudes is murky but the trend in this data offers a compelling reason to adopt green programs.

• 15 % more consumers are now aware of the term “sustainability” compared to three years ago (69 percent in 2010 vs. 54 percent in 2007).

- Hartman Group

Types of consumers

The four Green segments are:

Behavioural Greens: This group of people thinks and acts green. They have negative attitudes towards products that pollute and incorporate green practices into their lives on a regular basis.

Think Greens: This group of consumers think green, but don’t always act green.

Potential Greens: This group neither behaves, nor thinks along particularly environmentally conscious lines and remains on the fence about key green issues.

True Browns: They are not environmentally conscious, and may in fact have negative attitudes about environmental issues.

Reaching behavioural greens

7.5 million Australians

• Hold negative attitudes towards products that pollute

• Incorporate Green practices regularly and include Green

as one of their purchasing criteria

• Likely to buy from an eco friendly company

How to reach them - This group tends to be more receptive to traditional advertising than any of the other segments. Behavioural Greens maintain that they remember ads when shopping, that advertising can help them learn about available products and that they expect advertising to be interesting.

Segment snapshot

• Mature adults and retirees

• University graduate or higher degree

• Above average income

• Typically own their own home

The difficulty in accessing what is green and what’s not.

GreenwashingIf you don’t believe in it and don’t truly change you will be caught out.

Where to start

1. Motor Vehicles

2. General business practices

3. Pest control service offering

General business practices

“sustainability in now a permanent part of 70% of corporate agenda.”

“Most companies now also consider green practices vital to remaining competitive and many affirm these practices are contribution to profits.”

- 2011 MIT study

Easy, cost effective green efforts for business

• Recycling

• Reducing paper waste

• Water audit

• Buying Green Energy

• Managing Computer Power

• Employee engagement

Employee engagement

Investing in employees, the most valuable resource of any company, always pays dividends.

Environmentally-conscious business practices help attract and retain the best employees by increasing satisfaction and pride in the workplace.

Without buy in to your green practices they won’t work

Many potential employee will not work in Pest control due to perceived environmental issues with the job.

Page 14: Sustainability in Pest Control

Things to look at when starting to implement a green pest management offering.

Aim:

1. Implement a program that results in measurable and verifiable risk

reduction to the environment.

2. It is equally important that the company be able to clearly communicate the

value of it’s green service program to both employee and customers.

Page 15: Sustainability in Pest Control

How to build a basic model of a green pest management service.

A structural IPM program must be implemented, which

emphasises three fundamental elements:

1. Pest prevention

2. Multiple management strategies & tools

3. System approach

Page 16: Sustainability in Pest Control

The Pest Manager should adopt the following practices for each site

1. Establish a partnership2. Record a detailed history about the pest problem for the customer3. Thoroughly inspect the property (Including Identify pests, prepare maps and

lists)4. Discuss inspection findings with customers including pest/problems, location

and severity5. Discuss management strategies with the customer, including the relationship

needed between Pest manager and customer to solve the problem and provide information about the green service options been used.

6. Develop a written plan that integrates a number of treatment strategies7. Provide customer with records and recommendations8. Establish a continual monitoring program appropriate for the site9. Maintain written records

.

Page 17: Sustainability in Pest Control

Treatment Strategies

Treatment Step 1 –i. Sanitationii. harbourage reductioniii. Physical, mechanical, cultural & biological control

Treatment Step 2 –i. Use of well contained bait products and revisit step 1

Treatment Step 3 –i. Use pesticides if necessary (choose green options) and use as needed not on a

predetermined scheduleii. Limit application to Crack & Crevices & Spot treatments only.

Page 18: Sustainability in Pest Control

Selecting a pesticide product

1. Toxicitya. Acute Effectsb. Chronic or Delayed Effectsc. Allergic Affects

2. Potential Environmental Impact3. Potential for exposure4. Sensitivity of site

Glyphosate accounts for 25% of global herbicide market between 2004 & 8 growth was running at 27% and has reached 600 000 tonnes per annum.

Consumers opinions differ to ours

http://www.greenlivingtips.comWhile heavy duty chemicals are an option, they should be seen as a last resort. Some of the many chemical compounds used specifically for cockroaches and their impact on the environment include:Indoxocarb - developed by Dupont, indoxocarb is toxic to mammals, birds, fish, and aquatic invertebrates. It has a half life ranging from 3 to 693 days.Hydramethylnon - highly to very highly toxic to fish in laboratory studies and has a half-life of 10 to 11 days in an aquatic environmentFipronil - highly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. Toxic to bees. Half-life of 20 to 200+ days.

Potential Environmental Impact

The environmental impact of pesticides is often greater than what is intended by those who

use them.

• Over 98% of sprayed insecticides and 95% of herbicides reach a destination other than

their target species

• Air, water, bottom sediments, and food.

A METHOD TO MEASURE THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF PESTICIDES

http://dspace.library.cornell.edu/bitstream/1813/5203/1/FLS-139.pdf(400 pesticides listed)• Environmental impact quota

• Applicator Component- toxicity

• Consumer Component – Direct and water table

• Ecological Component – Aquatic(fish and ½ life) & terrestrial (Bees, Birds &

Anthrapods)

Page 22: Sustainability in Pest Control

Potential for exposure

Risk = Toxicity + Exposure

• With most pesticides, the longer you are exposed the greater the chance of harm• Some people are more at risk than others, depending on their age, gender, individual

sensitivity, or other factors.

How are people exposed to pesticides? People can be exposed to pesticides in three ways: • Breathing (inhalation exposure). • Getting it into the mouth or digestive tract (oral exposure). • Contact with the skin or eyes (dermal exposure).

Page 23: Sustainability in Pest Control

Sensitivity of site

• Barrow Island – where Gorgon will be located – is an internationally significant nature reserve and the site of Australia's largest onshore operating oil field for the past 45 years. (Chevron Australia)

• Industrial city site

Page 24: Sustainability in Pest Control

1. Employ a comprehensive, environmentally friendly approach when treating a property.2. Investigate the source of the problem – and eliminate it – before applying pesticides.3. Apply pesticides only when necessary.
