Brief Advice

• Brief advice works – international evidence shows 2% of those given brief advice will quit

• Wairarapa exceeds this with 10% of patients quitting – one in ten people!

More stats

• Brief Advice – provided to 83 % of patients (5524 / 6649)

• 11% of patients were given or referred to cessation support

• If we are to get to 25% referred, need to code another 980 patients

Smart strategies needed going forward!• We are not going to get much further by

continuing with just BA and cessation referrals

• We need new inspiring approaches for both practitioners and patients

• Motivational Interviewing for all health targets

• Applicable for self management and long term conditions

Motivational Interviewing• We need to promote and market this to get

practitioners to training• We need to invest some funding into

training• We think for our biggest practice with

enrolled pop of 20 000 will require training at the practice.

• We have 6649 people in the Wairarapa who smoke

Research proves most smokers want to quit, however remaining smokers are likely to be;• often considered more addicted and difficult to treat• Less pleased and harder to be contacted – but we will continue!• We need to change our mindset and approach

• We need to continue to support our practitioners to be inspired and enthusiastic
