Suunto hand-held clinometers are precisioninstruments used all over the world bysurveyors, engineers, cartographers, geologists, miners, architects and manyothers who need to be able to measureheights, vertical angles and slopes quicklyand easily.
There is an extensive selection of scales tochoose from. These include normal linearangle scales, i.e. degrees, gons and mils aswell as per cent scales, topographic scales, metric or American and special secant scales.
The scales have graduations of one degreeor one per cent, one foot or a quarter ofa meter.
Suunto height meters are for measuringheights, especially the heights of trees, with great accuracy and speed. They canalso be used to determine the angle ofa gradient.
Both clinometers and height meters havesturdy housing bodies made from corrosionresistant anodized aluminium alloy. Thescale cards run on special bearings inhermetically sealed plastic containers filledwith a liquid which guarantees that theyrun smoothly and stop quickly.
The liquid will not freeze or evaporate, retains full damping properties in allworking conditions and eliminates irritatingscale vibrations.
For work in twilight conditions or even intotal darkness, the clinometers come withan optional built-in, maintenance-free lightsource.
OPTICAL HEIGHT METER PM-5/1520 P
This instrument is for measuring heights, especiaIly the heights of trees, with greataccuracy. It is available in several versions.(See product specifications table on page 6).
Suunto height meters can also be used todetermine the angle of a gradient slope. This is done by using the 20 m scale andthe conversion table which is imprinted onthe back.
OPTICAL READING CLINOMETERPM-5/360 PC
This sturdy but lightweight (110 g or 4 ozs)pocket-size instrument is suitable for everykind of work. Scale reading is easy througha built-in-parallax-free lens.
Sighting and scale reading are donesimultaneously. There are no screws to turn,
no bubbles to center, and nothing to adjust.Where space is limited, inclinations can beread by placing the instrument on theinclined surface and reading the anglethrough the side window.
The optical scales are graduated in degreesfrom 0 ' to ± 90 ', and from 0 % to ± 150 %.
Accuracy: can be read directly to one degreeor to one per cent and can be estimatedto 10 minutes of arc or one-fifth of oneper cent with readings approximately zerolevel. Absolute accuracy is about one thirdof a degree.
Rubber coverIntended for heavy-duty professional use.The instruments shown on this page areexamples of the broad range illustratedcompletely on page 6.

MEASURING UNDERGROUND SLOPES (pic. A)
Suunto clinometers have proved very usefulin mines, quarries and tunnels where inclineshave to be measured with great accuracy. They have also helped speleologists toexplore caves where nobody has ever gonebefore.
HEIGHT MEASUREMENT USINGTHE SUUNTO HEIGHT METER (pic. B)
This example applies to Suunto PM-5/66,which can be used for distances of 66 and132 ft. If other distances are required, especially 100 ft, a percent scale isrecommended as in e.g. PM-5/66PC,PM-5/36OPC etc.
A. DETERMINING BASIC DISTANCEUnfold target and place against the objectto be measured. Look through the prismand note the double image of the target.Step back far enough until the mark of thecorrect distance (in this example 66 ft)coincides with the 0 mark. You are nowat the correct distance (66 ft). If aninstrument with prism and target is notavailable, you can of course use a tapemeasure in determining the basic distance.
B. MEASURING THE HEIGHTHold the instrument as shown in the pictureat the top of this page and tilt it until thehair line coincides with the top of the object. The reading of the right, 66 ft scale givesthe height of the top directly in feet fromeye level. Adding your eye-to-grounddistance gives the total height of the object.
On sloping groundwhen the base ofthe tree is aboveyour eye level takethe reading to thebase of the tree andsubtract thereadings. 42 ft - 9 ft= 33 ft
On sloping groundwhen the base ofthe tree is belowyour eye level alsotake the reading tothe base of the treeand add thesefigures. 27 ft + 8.5ft = 35.5 ft
When the base ofthe tree is at thesame level as yourfeet, add your eye-to-ground heightdirectly to thereading. 32 ft + 5.5ft = 37.5 ft

OPERATING
With both eyes open, aim the compass sothat the hairline is superimposed on thetarget, when viewed through the lens.
On the R model the main scale gives thebearing from a known position to thetarget. The small reversed scale gives thebearing from the target to your position. This feature is of great value whencalculating a precise position, particularlyat sea.
Use the left or the right eye as preferred. With both eyes open, an optical illusionmakes the hairline appear to continueabove the instrument frame, superimposedon the target. This improves readingaccuracy and speed.
Because of an eye condition calledheterophoria, the reading accuracy of someuse may be impaired. Check for this asfollows:
Take a reading with both eyes open andthen close the free eye. If the reading doesnot change appreciably there is nodisalignment of the eye axes, and botheyes can be kept open. Should there be adifference in the readings, keep the othereye closed and sight half-way above theinstrument body. The hairline now rises
above the instrument body and is seenagainst the target.
Suunto bearing compasses are designed tocombine extreme accuracy with ease andspeed of operation. Their flat, compacthousings have no protruding or adjustableparts and are designed to stand up toheavy-duty wear.
The cards of these compasses are immersedin a special dampening fluid that ensuresvibrationless, smooth movement. They arepivoted on polished sapphire tips. Thebearing assembly is to all intents andpurposes subject to no wear and the liquidremains clear and its viscosity low underall conditions.
The compasses have been given permanentanti-static treatment. The lens aperturesof the KB-14 and KB-20 types are restrictedhorizontally by a column, whichautomatically centers the eye on the opticalaxis, thus eliminating parallax.
ILLUMINATION
For use in twilight conditions or even totaldarkness, the compasses can be suppliedwith a built-in, maintenance-free lightsource, which will function perfectly for atleast 15 years.
KB-14 compasses are also available withefficient lithium battery poweredillumination. Water resistant withchangeable battery.
SATELLITE ANTENNA BEARING
It is expected that in a few years from nowthere will be millions of antennas pickingup signals from geostationary satellitespoised some 36,000 kilometres above theequator. These antennas have to be focusedwith great accuracy. Suunto instrumentsare already being used to orient them allover the world.
The Suunto KB-14 compass is used formeasuring horizontal angles and the PM-5 clinometer (shown on page 2-6) forvertical angles.

INCREMENT BORERS
Suunto increment borers are used forexamining wood quality and measuringgrowth rates.
The extent of woodworm or termitedamage, impregnation depth etc. can alsobe measured with these borers, which aremade of finest steel. However, these specialuses can cause extra wear to the borer bit.
Suunto increment borers come in corediameters of 5 or 12 mm and are coatedwith Teflon to reduce friction heat (animportant consideration when growingtrees are involved). The Teflon coating alsomakes the borers easy to extraxt. Boththread styles (two and three threads) aredesigned to make the borer easy to extractfrom the wood.
INCREMENT HAMMERSAND BARK GAUGES
These handy instruments are ideal formeasuring bark thicknesses and annualgrowth rates. Both have graduated scalesto facilitate measurement of the sample.
Suunto increment borers are usedfor examining wood quality andmeasuring growth rates.
