Chartered in 1928 as the ColumbiaChamber of Commerce, theSusquehanna Valley Chamber ofCommerce (SVCC) began repre-senting the tri-borough region ofColumbia, Marietta andWrightsville in the late 1980s.SVCC most visibly represents thearea through its operation of theVisitors Center located alongRoute 30.

SVCC strives to improve the qualityof life and to promote an atmos-phere of business cooperation inColumbia, Marietta, andWrightsville. This mission is easilyseen in the SVCC tag line “RiverTowns Working Together.” SVCCservice reaches beyond these rivercommunities on both sides of theSusquehanna River, extending intoLancaster and York Counties insouth-central Pennsylvania.

The Chamber and Visitors Centerfunctions under a Board ofDirectors and is operated by twostaff members with the assistanceof approximately 20 Visitor CenterVolunteers. Over 100 additional volunteers from the area give oftheir time at our communityfundraising events.

Dear Friends,The Susquehanna River towns of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville boast a strong sense of

community and pride in the rich history of this region. As we head toward the sesquicentennial of theburning of the bridge that once spanned the river between Columbia and Wrightsville, we are remind-ed of the “can do” attitude of area residents. Over the years that same attitude served investors andaspiring entrepreneurs well as they tackled the adversities of their eras while establishing local busi-nesses. That confident, resourceful spirit can be found in our region’s business people even today.

The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce proudly serves area businesses located inColumbia, Marietta, Wrightsville, and beyond. Investment in SVCC membership is an investment inyour business and your community. SVCC provides a wide range of services to our members includ-ing assistance in promoting your business, opportunities for networking, and coordination of grandopenings and ribbon cfuttings for new businesses. SVCC continues to seek new ways to assist ourmember businesses in their growth and development.

SVCC sponsors numerous events to help raise the visibility of your business as well as that ofthe Chamber and Visitors Center. Member events such as mixers, breakfast meetings, and seminarsserve to educate members while connecting members to one another. Sponsorship of one of thesemember events places your name in front of your business peers. Your presence can further beenhanced through sponsorship of a community event. These events, coordinated by SVCC staff, raisefunds to finance the operation of our Visitors Center. Among these events are the well-known BridgeBust, the Antique, Arts & Craft Show, and two 5K runs - the River Run and the MAG Fall Flash - aswell as our newest event, the popular Chiques Challenge. In addition, new community events contin-ue to evolve from staff ideas. Sponsorship of these community events places your business name firm-ly in the public eye.

The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center activities and operations arecoordinated and implemented by its two staff members. In her role as Executive Director, KathleenHohenadel coordinates member services and organizies a selection of community events. AmyHooper, SVCC Administrative Director, manages Visitor Center services and coordinates the fiveanchor community events mentioned above. Both staff members communicate with membership andcivic or governmental organizations and promote the area and its businesses.

SVCC has been represented in the planning of events to commemorate the 150th anniversary ofthe burning of the Columbia - Wrightsville Bridge during the Civil War. Join us in promoting thisregion’s past and present through your support of these commemorative events. Your donations oftime, financial backing, advertising, or attendance are all valuable to the success of this programming.Watch for updates on the activities scheduled for June 2013 as part of this remembrance.

Partnerships among communities, their businesses, and their non-profit organizations serve tomake all of us stronger and more successful. Chamber membership allows us to join together to

The Lighted Display Board is a lighted advertising unit that dis-plays an 11 x 14 photo of your business. The size and location of theLighted Display Board make it a prominent feature of the VisitorsCenter and give its participating membership a visual presence withreal impact. Your rack cards are displayed at your photo, increasingyour brochure presence 300%. Our convenient location along Route30 is often the first stop for visitors to the area; the map at the cen-ter of the Lighted Display Board is used by staff and volunteers whengiving directions to visitors, again drawing attention to the business-es promoted through this membership category.

AFFILIATIONThe Susquehanna Valley Chamber of

Commerce and Visitors Center is not organi-zationally a part of the Lancaster CountyChamber of Commerce and Industry, theYork County Chamber of Commerce, thePennsylvania Dutch Convention & VisitorsBureau, or the York County Convention &Visitors Bureau. However, we do enjoy recip-rocal honorary memberships with theseorganizations.

MEMBERSHIPAlmost two-thirds of our members come

from the tri-borough area of Columbia,Marietta, and Wrightsville. Other areas ofLancaster and York Counties as well asregions beyond are represented in our mem-bership. Most members join to create con-nections with other business people throughthe networking opportunities presented bySVCC; others have joined for member bene-fits such as insurance through PCI.

FUNDINGThe Chamber is an independent,

nonprofit 501(c)6 organization, fully fundedby members of the community through con-tributions, membership dues, and communityevents. Currently, there is no funding fromgrants or government organization, nor arewe affiliated with any other sponsoringchambers.

HISTORYEarly 20th Century until 1920 - Columbia

Merchants and Manufacturers Association(CMMA) is active in the community.

October 11, 1920 - CMMA changes name toColumbia Chamber of Commerce.

July 7, 1928 - Charter is created forColumbia Chamber of Commerce.

1984 - First full-time paid staff members(Secretary and Executive Director) areintroduced to the chamber.

Around 1988 - Chamber is renamedSusquehanna Valley Chamber ofCommerce and covers tri-borough area ofColumbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville.

1990 - Vo-Tech holds design contest andstudents build new Visitors Center at 445Linden Street, Columbia, Pa.

PUBLICATIONS and WEB SITE

A quarterly newsletter is available viaemail, regular mail, or website posting. Allmembers are welcome to submit items ofinterest for inclusion in this member publication.

The Chamber publishes an annualInformation Guide that is distributed throughour member businesses, our Visitors Center,as well as in relocation and information pack-ets. This Information Guide is also deliveredto all residences in Columbia, Marietta, andWrightsville through the services of EnglePrinting and Publishing. All SVCC membersare included in the Guide and have the oppor-tunity to place an advertisement.

SVCC also workd with Integra Publishingto produce Susquehanna River Towns, aguide geared to visitors to the region. Thispublication includes the history of the areaas well as information on activities andevents hosted by community organizations.This calendar of events appeals to residentsand guests alike. All SVCC members have theopportunity to place an advertisement.

The SVCC website is located atwww.PaRivertowns.com. Members are listedunder Our Members tab with their businesswebsite linked to the SVCC site. Both printpublications mentioned (Information Guideand Susquehanna River Towns) are avail-able as links from our site. Moreover, smartphone users may appreciate the mobile ver-sion of our website provided through RTSMobile.
