Search engine firm Adzuna said competi-tion for posts had fallen as a result of 30 citiesin the UK now having more vacancies thanjobseekers.

The number of advertised vacancies hasincreased for four months in a row, although

many of the vacancies are for part-time work.Vacancies in customer services are looking

particularly strong in the run-up to the busyChristmas period.

The report also showed that advertisedsalaries jumped by two per cent in Septembercompared to a year ago to an average of34,695.

Andrew Hunter, co-founder of Adzuna, said:The cautious green shoots of job marketgrowth are now beginning to firmly take rootas businesses revel in new-found economicconfidence. The number of vacancies on

offer is rapidly expanding, and UK vacanciescrossed the one million mark in the last fewdays, which bodes well for vacancy levels inOctober.

At the same time unemployment has fallento below two million, its lowest level since2008. That potent combination of factors iscatalysing a recovery in salaries, as employ-ers raise wages in order to attract the talent

they need to respond to an uptick in businessdemand. Employers are also increasinglyaware of the bounty of opportunities avail-able to existing employees looking to movejobs, and are handing out pay rises to preventtalent falling through the cracks.

The value of the UKs recruitment industryhas passed its pre-recession peak, recordingrevenue of 28.7 billion in the last financialyear, according to ano ther study.

The Recruitment and Employment Confed-eration (REC) said annual turnover increasedby more than eight per cent, with most

revenue coming from temporary or contractbusiness.

REC chief executive Kevin Green said: Therecruitment industry is the driving forcebehind the UKs labour market recovery.The positive impact that recruiters have onpeoples working lives and businesses in thiscountry is the reason we have record employ-ment, and unemployment falling at unprec-

edented speed.As the jobs market recovers, there are still

challenges. Some bigger businesses are creat-ing their own in-house recruitment teams,clients are demanding more in a marketwhere skilled candidates are harder andharder to find, while new online tools leadsome employers to assume that sourcing andsifting candidates is easy.

Minister for Employment Esther McVeysaid: Employment is up, unemployment isdown and todays figures show there are jobsout there with full-time jobs accounting

for three quarters of the rise in emsince 2010. The Governments longeconomic plan to help businesses create jobs is working. Up and dowtry our frontline staff at Jobcentrworking hard to help match jobsethese vacancies so they too have tof a regular wage.
