The purpose of the California Association forDevelopmental Education (CalADE) is to promote the following goals within the State of California:

1. To provide visibility and significance to basic skills and developmental education programs and their support services through a professional group of practitioners in postsecondary education institutions.

2. To promote support for basic skills and developmental education programming.

3. To provide a means for identification and interaction with fellow professionals in basic skills and developmental education areas.

4. To provide an informational channel for postsecondary basic skills and developmental education faculty, administrators, and staff.

5. To provide faculty and staff development activities for sharing of professional methods, techniques and strategies.

6. To identify and initiate solutions for issues and concerns rising from basic skills and developmental education services within postsecondary institutions.

7. To promote cooperation and communication between secondary and postsecondary institutions in the area of developmental education.

8. To serve as an advocate for issues related to funding; assessment policies, practices, and procedures; and the development and advancement of basic skills and developmental education programs.

NADE Goals

To preserve and make possible educational opportunity for each postsecondary learner.

To develop in each learner the skills and attitudes necessary for the attainment of academic, career, and life goals.

To ensure proper placement by assessing each learner’s level of preparedness for college course work.

To maintain academic standards by enabling learners to acquire competencies needed for success in mainstream college courses.

To enhance the retention of students.

To promote the continued development and application of cognitive and affective learning theory.

You are invited to submit proposals for CalADE’s 1st Annual Fall Conference.

Join your colleagues from California as we seek to understand and improve the journey we take with our students.

PROPOSALSThe California Association for Developmental Education (CalADE) supports educators involved in helping underprepared students prepare, prepared students advance and advanced students excel through postsecondary education.

The Executive Committee for the CalADE Conference invites presentations that share expertise and insights into the very important and complex undertaking of providing access and support for these students.

We welcome proposals from faculty, researchers, program administrators, curriculum developers, and other professional educators with interest in such areas as reading, writing, math, English as a Second Language, learning disabilities, contextualized learning, assessment, learning/study strategies, counseling, computers, and legislative issues.

Factors Affecting Proposal SelectionProposals will be selected on the basis of appropriateness and significance of topic as well as indications that the presentation will be organized and well prepared. Additionally, we seek a balance in the range of topics, level of expertise, and interests covered.

Steps in Submitting a Proposal

1. Complete the Proposal Submission Form using either the form or a photocopy.

2. Prepare a 250-word abstract of the session.

3. Include a page with the names, titles, and institutional affiliations of the presenters.

4. Send the completed proposal package to

SESSION FORMAT

Concurrent sessions will be 60 minutes, including time for a presentation followed by questions and answers.

RESPONSIBILITIES of PRESENTERS

1. All presenters must register and pay fees for the conference. CalADE is unable to reimburse program participants for expenses.

2. When two or more people are presenting, the Contact Presenter is responsible for notifying all co-presenters about the status of the proposal.

3. No session selected for the conference should have its content significantly changed once accepted.

4. Presenters are responsible for providing session handouts.

GUIDELINES

Follow the guidelines below to enhance proposal submission:

Title: The title is important to attract participants to your session. Choose a title that will be clear to the intended audience and limit it to nine words. Lengthy titles will be edited.

Abstract: The abstract is the only part of the proposal seen by proposal reviewers. It must show clarity of purpose, succinctness, appropriateness and significance for the intended audience, indicating that the presentation will be well-prepared, and (if relevant) well-researched. The abstract should be limited to 250 words and one page.

Summary: Summaries appear in the conference program booklet to help conference

participants decide which presentations are most appropriate to their interests. They should be written in the third person future tense (e.g.,

“The presenter will …”) and avoid references to published works. The summary should be no longer than 50 words.
