THE NEWSLETTER FOR MEMBERS OF THE SWAN YACHT CLUB

THE CYGNUS FEBRUARY 2017

SWAN YACHT CLUB SINCE 1904

RIVERSIDE ROAD EAST FREMANTLE

Dear Members,

As you are aware the club is doing well.

Renovations

Though the renovations are not yet complete, we have new members regularly; our club is the best venue on

the river, with the staff and the food deserving recognition. Construction has recommenced on the south and

west sides of the building and the lift has arrived from Europe.

Meeting Protocol and Guidelines development

A Meeting Protocol and Guidelines is currently being developed, and we hope to have this ready for use at the

next Open Mooring Meeting.

Fremantle Sea Rescue

We were fortunate to have presentation from Fremantle Sea Rescue recently, which was well received by our

members.

Disciplinary Action

After the OMM two of our members will be put to disciplinary hearings, due to irrelevant and inappropriate

questions and an abusive, disrespectful and unprofessional outburst at the Management Committee.

The Half Yearly AGM Wednesday 22nd February . Members please be reminded any pertinent questions that require research or detailed explanation must be

submitted to management 7 days prior to allow a constructive and well researched answer.

We look forward to the weather improving for a safer summer boating season.

Regards,

Kevin Bielby

THE CYGNUS FEBRUARY 2017

SWAN YACHT CLUB SINCE 1904

RIVERSIDE ROAD EAST FREMANTLE

Some 4 and half years ago the club sat down and created a 5 Year Plan, a blue print for future activities aimed

at future proofing the club. The blue print to provide the club with a clear set of goals to pull itself out of the

mire of indiscretions and apathy.

At the time of drafting the plan there were a number of ‘big ticket’ items that required immediate attention for

the club to move forward. Some of them included;

1. The Swan River Trust Unauthorised Works matter was addressed with the club rectifying the list of

indiscretions and the club re-establishing agency relationships

2. A tiresome Forensic Audit was completed and the outcomes finalised with the club being back on

course meeting its legislative obligations.

3. The replacement of a dilapidated jetty 2 was completed.

4. Re- establishing our relationships with other Government entities.

5. The club house renovation and extension.

We set about creating a purpose – BRINGING LIFE TO THE RIVER!

Followed by a vision - Give members and locals access to an involved boating community and the social

benefits of a “river-side lifestyle”.

With 3 strategic pillars –

1. Facilities and infrastructure.

2. Attracting and Engaging People

3. Financial sustainability

Reflecting on the past 5 years, I commend the core group of Committee, staff and members, who shared in the

vision.

It has been pleasing to monitor the measurable indicators the commitment to the clubs purpose, vision and

strategic pillars has created.

Member and guests attendance are up significantly, membership activity over the past 4 months is

unprecedented, the marina facility is at capacity, and there is a high demand for future club function and event

bookings all leading to financial sustainability.

Keep in mind the club is still under construction.

THE CYGNUS FEBRUARY 2017

SWAN YACHT CLUB SINCE 1904

RIVERSIDE ROAD EAST FREMANTLE

In September, the clubs first 5 Year Plan will expire and the club will direct its attention to a revised 5 Year

Plan confident in the knowledge that the purpose, vision and strategic pillars has served us well.

I encourage all members to get on board, live the purpose and share in the vision.

the clubs existing 5 Year Plan is available for members to view on the club website.

Around the club

Meeting processes and procedures require some work. I was aghast when present at the most recent Open

Mooring meeting to witness a member’s inability to remain civil when addressing the Committee. There

should be a zero tolerance to inappropriate behaviour as there was a total lack of respect and or appreciation

for those who volunteer their time and efforts.

On a positive note, I was pleased to see a number of members waiting patiently, who are yet to secure a pen,

in attendance.

Separately, well done to Mal Yates for sharing useful information related to his insurance experience, which

was of a benefit and a positive message.

Marina

The marina currently sits at capacity with a number of members patiently awaiting an opportunity on the Pen

Wait list.

Remedial works related to a Jetty 3 finger jetty, damaged last month as a result of a speeding vessel, has been

corrected in company with other repairs to finger jetties.

An audit of the jetty electrical bollards has been completed with a number of sockets replaced.

Building

Working our way through the works, as described in the Commodores report, the administration team in

company with galley and bar crew has demonstrated great resilience and initiative during a hectic period.

The final phase is likely to offer new challenges and I am confident our crew can navigate its way to the finish

line.

THE CYGNUS FEBRUARY 2017

SWAN YACHT CLUB SINCE 1904

RIVERSIDE ROAD EAST FREMANTLE

I look forward to seeing you all down at the Swan. Bring your friends and encourage them to join the most

vibrant and inclusive club on the River!

Damien Gaspar

General Manager

Hello everyone

Well where did that month go?

The big item from your House Committee is the Dress Code. I have been ongoing for more years than I can

remember and is still very much a current topic. As we have now improved our clubhouse and facilities

beyond our wildest dreams, and as we continue the renovation, we have now become a premier venue.

A dress code has had to be implemented that we need to enforce to keep our standards to an acceptable level. I

think Smart Casual is a term that we all know and understand, and has become an easy to comply with code

which we have now adopted. Our outdoors lifestyle, in the sunny west, leads to the wearing of thongs and

singlets both for men and woman, however whilst ok outside or the alfresco during the afternoon, it is not

appropriate attire in the dining room or bar areas after 7pm. We ask that you be aware of this and inform your

guests also that this is compulsory.

We have some great initiatives coming up throughout the year that would be great to have club members get

behind. The first one is a family movie night planned for Friday 10th March in our top bar area. Bring the kids

down and enjoy popcorn and watch a family favourite – The Big Friendly Giant (BFG). See below for more

details.

Cheers everyone, see you at the club.

THE CYGNUS FEBRUARY 2017

SWAN YACHT CLUB SINCE 1904

RIVERSIDE ROAD EAST FREMANTLE

Greetings Fellow Members,

Just a reminder, given some of the weather over the past few days and with the colder months on their way, to

please check your ropes, chains and weights. The mooring committee will be assessing these and asking that

any members with ropes that are undersized, have knots in them, or are frayed, to resolve within 14 days.

We have had a number of incidents recently where trailer boats, driven by full members, have been driven at

excessive speed to and from the boat ramp. This has caused problems and disturbance to the member’s

enjoyment on boats on Jetties 1 and 2. Please ensure you make no wash as you depart and return in your

dinghy or power boat from the boat ramp. Anyone noted creating a disturbance from the boat ramp will be

reported to Department of Transport who will issue fines.

Members please remember to keep an eye on your children if they are swimming at the beach in front of the

club. Please also prevent your child from collecting sand on the Jetty or throwing it at the boats adjacent to the

beach (as has occurred on multiple occasions in the past month). In addition, children have been spotted

playing in the slipway, which is not allowed. We are primarily concerned for the children’s safety, but the

parents ultimately remain responsible for their children and we kindly ask that they are kept out of this area.

We have a busy bee coming up in April on the 1st April. We look forward to seeing you then for a 7am Start.

Kind regards.

Ladies Auxilary Report

Hi Everyone,

First I would like to extend sympathy to the family of Florence May Devine (May) who passed away recently.

May was the wife of Basil Devine who was Commodore of the SYC from 1955-1968, during which time

(1965) the club moved from its humble beginnings near the south end of the Old traffic bridge to where it is

now.

Basil, with May by his side, $646 in the bank, a great committee and 83 financial members, built the original

club. The area consisted of no more than reclaimed river sand and shell, with no solid foundation. It was

impossible to drive a car over it without getting bogged. The workforce was entirely voluntary, and under

Commodore Basils direction, the club and jetty’s were built. According to the records a “drop of the Doings”

was a must at the end of a hard days work, and the Ladies Committee put on lunches Saturdays and Sundays

for the workers. The original downstairs bar area was named the “ May Belle” bar after one of Basils boats and

the whole of the area was known as the “Basil Devine Room”. Sadly Commodore Basil after standing down

in 1968 passed away at an early age in 1970. He was held in very high esteem as a gentleman and hard worker

for the SYC. The first general meeting was held in the new clubrooms in 1967.. 50yrs later our first general

meeting in the newly renovated upstairs of the club was held just last week. I’m sure Basil, May and all those

early members who built the club would have approved.

Rear Commodore Report

THE CYGNUS FEBRUARY 2017

SWAN YACHT CLUB SINCE 1904

RIVERSIDE ROAD EAST FREMANTLE

The Ladies Social Committee, now known as the Ladies Committee, played a huge part in the early days of

the SYC. The committee mainly fundraised by organising social functions such as barbecues, dances, cash

and carry evenings, and raffles. They raised enough money to eventually pay for all the furniture and fittings,

including tables and chairs for the new club house. They also organised outings such as visiting the new

“Kentucky Fried Chicken” establishment to see how the chicken was prepared and cooked (The beginning of

take away food). It would have been quite a novelty. They also organised a very successful social in the “Old

Time Music Hall” in Fremantle, after which May Devine was amongst those to be thanked for their efforts.

Some other familiar names on the Committee were Brown, Reynolds, Jones, French, Tanner, Stephens and

Chester.

The Ladies Committee disbanded in the eighties, and was reinvented in 2005 when Commodore Graham

Crofts asked if I would be interested in helping him get a Ladies Committee going once more. I offered to do

so for two years and here we are 12yrs later, and I’m feeling a bit like Basil Devine who was in office for

14yrs. In the past 12yrs the Ladies Committee has done a lot of hard work around the club, bringing people

into functions, and doing our best as the club became a bit tired and worn to turn a “sows ear into a silk purse”

for Commodores Balls, Melbourne Cup, Ladies Lunches, Kids Christmas Party and other many and varied

functions. We have supported Open Days, hostessing on the boats in the early days, Anzac Day, (the Anzac

biscuits) The annual “Biggest Morning Tea” for cancer, and in general supporting and working towards a

great club environment. We love what we do and have a great time! New members are always welcome..

My info re the history has come from the Swan Yacht Club book “The First Hundred Years” 1904-2004. A

great read if you’re interested.

A quote from the book: “May the future years provide the club with good sailing conditions, continued

prosperity and, above all, a venue for the happy and friendly association of its members, which after all is the

fundamental object of any club.” As we move forward in a new era of the club, these words will be relevant

for future generations to come. So enjoy our beautiful club and surroundings, good food and wonderful

friends. Respect the venue and the people around you. Be responsible for the actions of your children and

guests. We’ve survived the first year of renovations and thanks must go to our Commodore Kevin Bielby,

Committees, Management and our wonderful staff for their ingenuity in keeping things ticking over. Well

Done!

Until next month,

Marian Byfield
