Welcome to Focus School Swansea Campus. A school committed to the OneSchool Global vision.
Operating as a through school, from Years 3-13, we offer a balanced curriculum to ensure our students leave ‘well-rounded’, having achieved a quality education, are career-ready and in a position to maximise potential in their chosen work placement.
In 2015 we were privileged to be one of five Focus Schools to have a ‘Learning Centre’ installed, which has become a vibrant hub of the school day.
The self-directed learning concept has caused an incredible culture change in the environment of the school – driven, inspiring, creative, flexible, resultful – the students love it!
Strong links have been built with other Focus Campuses through delivery of subject lessons through Video Conferencing (VC).
Our aim is to reach to a level of ‘Excellence in Education’ through a cutting-edge delivery from our teaching team. We are confident the students will respond, so we are committed to ensure they have their own personal vision to ‘be the best they can be’.
Please come and see us in action! Richard NunnLead Campus Administrator
welcome
“Swansea Campus has embraced a number of exciting opportunities recently which it has engaged with as a complete team of very keen stakeholders. The chance to create a self-directed learning system and environment has been seized upon and turned into a unique way of allowing all learners to personalise their learning. Teachers and parents have also bought into the process very enthusiastically, and this ownership of learning has allowed Swansea to top the Focus progress charts” Dr Adam England, Headteacher

Focus School
During the early 1990s a number of Christian parents who were members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church worked together to develop approved educational facilities that catered for their children.
Although relatively young, these schools have shown the determination and ability to be progressive and innovative with the capacity to adjust quickly to the changes in education.
Progress has continued with the Schools developing learning programs to encompass primary and secondary year levels, in all countries where the Brethren families reside.
From each School’s beginnings to today, dedication to the principle of ‘learning to learn’ continues as the motto...
Click on the OneSchool logo to learn more about how this cutting-edge schooling system was inspired and how this awesome vision is being realised.
After some years of operation Focus Learning Trust was set up as a national education trust to provide coordination of expertise and support for many schools around the UK, all of which were established on the same basis. There are now over 30 similar schools in the UK, all affiliated to Focus Learning Trust.
Bringing this outstanding foresight to reality, Focus are working closely with OneSchool in adopting the self-directed approach to learning. In self-directed learning (SDL), it is the student who takes both the initiative and the responsibility for their learning. In essence, students are ‘learning to learn’. The self-directed journey is one in which students learn to think critically, to process information perceptually, to analyse data accurately and evaluate situations intelligently in order that they fulfil their true potential.
In SDL, once the student takes the initiative for their learning, that student then assumes complete responsibility and accountability for their learning experience. It is the student who then follows that learning through to its conclusion. This does not mean that there is no input from others, quite the contrary. However, in the SDL model, the teacher is no longer the ‘sage on the stage’ but rather a ‘guide at the side’, and students learn from many different resources, including each other. The crucial element is that the student drives his or her learning experience, beginning with recognising a need to learn.

The benefits of self-directed learning are numerous. It promotes in students a natural development of self-confidence, perseverance, initiative and accountability. With self-directed learning, students become lifelong learners, and its benefits can be felt long after a student has left school.

global vision
Focus School Swansea Campus started out in September 2003 as Keystone Education Trust, situated on the first floor of a business premises, with just 16 students from Years 7 to 12. The school grew, in every sense of the word, and in September 2005 we purchased a large modular building, located on the land at the rear of the premises and the school moved in. This site was expanded over the following 9 years with an assortment of other portable cabins.
In 2010, we acquired an old Victorian school building, just 8 miles from our Secondary school site, and opened a Primary department.
In 2014, we were thrilled to trade-in our cabins and ageing Victorian Primary school for a solid 3-storey concrete structure, an ex-fire service building. Our Primary and Secondary departments merged to become one school, Years 3 to 13, and we now have a total 46 pupils for the academic year 2016/17.

the house system
charitable fundraising
It is designed to reward academic work, effort, sporting achievements, music and drama performance and good citizenship. It is the role of the House System to embrace all students and provide a climate of success for all.
The House System consists of three houses each with an assigned colour as shown right. These houses are run globally throughout our affiliated schools, meaning that we can encourage teamwork with other regions, not just within our campus. Thus enhancing our students desire to strive for their best due to a much wider area of healthy and constructive competition.
Each student is assigned to a House and will normally remain in that House for their duration at the campus. Many house events and competitions are run which link to learning and help foster both team work and self-directed learning skills. The House System encourages healthy participation in activities and is well supported by House Captains and staff including Heads of House.
Alongside the House System, students are placed in mixed tutor groups for registration and have daily contact with their tutor.
The students at Swansea Campus are encouraged to think of those less fortunate than themselves. Fundraising and helping others fosters maturity and responsibility in our students and gives them an understanding of real life issues in the wider world. We have actively supported charitable organisations including:
At Swansea Campus the whole community is committed to helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

Comment
The OneSchool Skills lie at the heart of our curriculum. They are a globally agreed skill-set which are designed to enable students to maximise their learning in a truly self-directed manner. Development of these skills enables all ceilings to be lifted from learning and students to stretch and challenge themselves beyond expectations. Students are encouraged to celebrate their progress with their development of these skills and to reflect on areas for improvement. A citation-based reward system is in place which allows students to celebrate their achievement of Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. The annual Motivational Awards also celebrates excellence in OneSchool Skill Development.

OneSchool skills award scheme
Bridging the gap between school and work; Focus Schools offer a unique career advancement plan to all our students and this is proven to prepare them for the world of work:
What is CAP?The Career Advantage Programme (CAP) provides all students with the opportunity to gain the skills and aptitude to achieve rapid success in their post-school careers. The CAP does this by:• Providing a selection of professional training courses that can be completed
alongside senior school studies• Analysing the capability of each student professionally to ensure the student
an effectively complete the courses• Sponsorship for students to carry out extra-curricular studies in the last two
years of school.
The CAP curriculumCAP students are offered a range of courses from Diploma courses to career skills based studies. For CAP students, the diploma-type courses provide a theoretical and academic rigour which underpins the students’ academic programme and the career skills based study provides practical, real-world approaches to learning and helps them to develop skills and competencies required for lifelong learning.

Why is CAP Important? There is an increasing awareness globally that high school studies alone are not adequately preparing students for the modern workforce. The Career Advantage Programme is aimed at equipping our children with the necessary skills to bring positive benefits to our businesses from day one.
Important for students:
• improving their employment opportunities
• improving the potential of earning a higher income on graduation
• empowering rapid progress along their career path
Important for businesses:
• higher value employees that are useful from day one
• employees with an established work ethic; self-starters, self-finishers, self-motivators
• employees that understand the value of study and training
“Cap is a win-win concept for employers and employees alike. When employing young people, readiness for the ‘real world’ of work is one of the biggest challenges. With Cap a business has invested in a student and the student has completed 100 hours of paid work experience per year. This means the work experience is taken seriously and is long enough for the student to do real work in a number of meaningful roles. The result is a student with a much better idea of what career choices they may wish to pursue and greater focus as a result. The benefits of this to employers quickly become evident, as school-leavers enter the workplace ready to hit the ground running.”
Business Owner
“Cap has given me the opportunity to step inside a business and spend 200 hours gaining some real life work experience.”

" "It’s a fab place to work and I look forward to coming here every day. The old saying ‘Choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your whole life’ is never truer than here as it’s a complete privilege to contribute in an environment like this one.

I find that my children are… engaged with learning and enthused about school.Parent
It has been quite uplifting to the service since the children have moved into the building next door. Now a school, it is a delight to hear the soft tones of the choir and to see and hear the children outside playing.
Neighbour - Fire Service
Our school is very unique from other schools in the area as it has taken on the concept of SDL. As a result it has an outstanding culture of excellence and an unparalleled work ethic.
