MONDAY (28 MAY) MEETING AT ART GALLERY Our meeting this Monday is a special one – at Woolgoolga Art Gallery, and it will be catered by the hard-working Gallery members. The cost for the dinner is $25 per head, and there will be no $5 collection for the club on this night. Those who have not already seen the Club’s art exhibition on the apt theme of “Community: People, Place, Heart and Soul,” plus the his- torical display on our club, can catch up then. The large room of the gallery has a nice extra exhibition to go with that. See if you can spot all the works by members and partners in both rooms … you may be surprised! DONATION NEWS – END POLIO NOW The Club has decided to make a $1,000 dona-tion to End Polio Now, Rotary’s initiative that started in the Philippines 33 years ago. Since 1988, we’ve seen a worldwide reduction in po-lio cases of 99.9%. This year we have only seen 8 wild-virus-caused polio cases in two countries, as shown in the Table above.

(Two types of polio vaccine are needed to eradicate polio finally: Oral (OPV) and injected inactivated vaccine (IPV). Four additional 2018 polio cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo were actually caused by one type of “trivalent” oral polio vaccine that includes a mixture of live, weakened poliovirus strains, where one strain has under-gone a rare mutation to active form. In April 2016, all countries switched to bivalent OPV, which does not contain that strain and thus reduces the risk radically. As part of the polio eradication endgame, all countries will, at an appropriate point, stop OPV use altogether. From that time, only inactivated polio vaccine will be used.)

Since 2013, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has matched every $1 that Rotary commits to polio eradication 2-to-1. Thus our donation will effectively become A$3,000.

REPORT (14 MAY) MATILDE JAKOBSEN: MY FAMILY / YEP SAFARI Our YEP inbounder Matilde Jakobsen talked about her family and life back at home, as well as the big YEP safari that she has recently com-pleted with the other YEP inbounders. Your editor was freezing in Mel-bourne with family and does not have a report, but can report from the MCG that the Swans prevailed in a close tussle with Hawthorn in some-what less than tropical conditions!

REPORT REVIEWING OUR RYDA David Fayle has received this week the overview/feedback report on our last Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) day from RSE. As in the previous nine RYDAs, feedback was very good overall. If you want to read this report, David would be happy to email it to you.
