3. Exceptional candidates with a Bachelors or Masters degree in other fields are also considered for admission to the integrated PhD programme.
How to apply
1. Candidates aspiring for admission to the IMSc Ph.D/Integ. Ph.D programmes in
Mathematics must appear for the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM)
Ph.D scholarships Screening Test.
2. The IMSc academic year starts in the month of August. To apply for August of a given
year, candidates must write the NBHM exam held in January of that year.
3. Candidates must apply directly to the NBHM in order to write the screening test.
They need not send a separate application to IMSc.They need not send a separate application to IMSc.
4. IMSc (and also HRI) will get the test scores and copies of the applications directly
from the NBHM and will independently send interview call letters to candidates who
have passed their screening criteria. Interviews are held in March/April.
5. Final selection of candidates is based on their performance in the interview.

PhD Programme
1. CMI has an active PhD programme in Mathematics and Computer
Science.
2. CMI also has a option for students to pursue a part-time PhD at the
Institute.
3. The institute has close ties with the Institute of Mathematical
Sciences, Chennai. It is also possible for students to pursue research
work with faculty at either institute.
Admission procedure
Candidates are selected on the basis of an entrance examination held
during May in various centres across the country, followed by an
interview held in Chennai. Admission forms are normally distributed in

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme is an introduction to cutting-
edge research.
Department selects deserving candidates from the pool of applicants based on
their academic backgrounds, research interests and their performance in the
selection test (often an interview).
The selection is conducted twice a year (advertisement goes public tentatively in
the months of March and September).
The applicants who have their own fellowships (such as, UGC/CSIR-NET,
INSPIRE etc) may apply at any time of the year.
The Institute reserves the provision of offering rolling admission to these

•One of them is to provide project grants to women
scientists (post Masters and post Ph.D), who had a break
in their career. The age limits are ≤ 35 years/≤ 50 years,
respectively.

NBHM financially supports research projects, scholarships for M.Sc. and Ph.D. programme. It
funds various activities to further train students, undergraduates, post-graduates, teachers,
doctorates and post-doctorates etc.
ATM - Advanced training in mathematics
This is a program of advanced level Schools in mathemetics.
ATM schools have lecture courses in the inter-related areas of algebra, analysis , PDE, discrete
mathematics, geometry, number theory and topology.
This integrated training programme aims to provide basic and advanced knowledge in these
areas, and emphasize their interconnections via series of instructional schools.
The types of ATM Schools are:
AFS I, II - Annual foundational schools: for Ist year Ph.D. students.
AIS - Advanced Instructional schools: for more advanced Ph.D.
students ATMWC - workshop and conference for Researchers.

� There are 25 to 30 thousand teachers engaged in teaching mathematics
to undergraduates and post graduates.
� A big bulk of researchers takes their first lessons in higher
mathematics from these teachers.

This is a 1 month or a 2 weeks long programme dedicated to two or one subjects,
respectively. The courses emphasize connections between different fields of
mathematics. These are held during summer and winter breaks. Lecture notes and
problem sets are distributed. Available free software, information available on the
internet etc. is made known to them.
Eligibility: Should have cleared NET/SET or an equivalent examination.
Preferably below 30 years, Permanent lecturers in a College/University.
Preference for those who are involved in Math. Olympiad etc.
