Agenda
1. Warm-up (10 min)
2. Review hw#1 (15 min)
3. Combining like terms / practice (15 min)
4. OYO (On Your Own) practice problems (5 min)
Warm-Up:
HW#2: Simplifying algebraic expressions
Tues, 9/13
Algebraic ExpressionsObjective: To combine like terms to simplify expressions
Infinity HSMs. Sophia Papaefthimiou
Like Terms are terms with the same variable AND the same exponent.
Example #1:
Simplify: 5x – 4x2 – 7x + 14x2
Answer: 10x2 – 2x
To simplify expressions with like terms, simply combine the like terms.
Are these like terms?
1) 13k, 22kYes, the variables are the same.
2) 5ab, 4ba Yes, the order of the variables doesn’t matter.
(Commandment #9)
3) x3y, xy3
No, the exponents are on different variables.
WARNING!!!!
You calculate the answer using the sign that is to the left of the number or variable.
1) 5a2 + 7a
Simplified
2) -4x2y + x2y – x2y + x2
-4x2y + x2
3) 3m2n + 10mn2 – 7m2n – 4mn2 + 9m
-4m2n + 6mn2 + 9m
4) a + 3a – 4(9 – a)
8a – 36
5) If a triangle has sides 3x – 2, 5 – x and 2x – 5, what is the perimeter of the triangle?
4x – 2

2. 4(y2 + 8y – 2) – y2 + y
3. 5(3x – 7) – 6x
4. 7(4x2 + 3x) + 2(5x2 + x)
5. 8x + 2[5 – (x – 3)] Step 1: Distribute the -1 first (inside the brackets)
Step 2: Combine the like terms inside the brackets
Step 3: Distribute the 2
