The Southern African mining industry is one of the most prominent in the world, forming the backbone of the regions’ economy. The same has been the case in Sweden for a long time. This initiative aims provide examples of how companies in the mining industry prepare for the challenges of tomorrow and how they work actively with the crucial aspects of safety, skills and sustainability.

The main focus of the initiative is on how to improve efforts within safety, skills development and innovation to facilitate longevity and sustainability, and at the same time can increases profitability and efficiency in the mining sector.

The South African and Swedish companies listed herein, represent world leading solutions for mineral production, covering a wide range of procedures and processes such as rock engineering and water treatment as well as top-quality construction and mining equipment and vehicles.

The Swedish Southern African Mining Initiative, aims at creating a platform for knowledge-sharing and networking between Swedish and Southern African players in mining. It is our belief that close relationships between the Southern African and Swedish mining industries will prove mutually beneficial. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF SWEDEN (SGU) The Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) is the governmental expert agency under the Swedish Ministry of Enterprise, En-ergy and Communications, responsible for all issues relating to bedrock, mineral resources, soil and groundwater in Swe-den. SGU was founded 1858 and is today a modern, costumer oriented, organization with some 250 employees. MALMFALTEN - GROUNDWORKS Malmfälten AB, based in Sweden and operating since 2008, provides customised solutions in business development, process engineering, logistics, maintenance and products, catering primarily to the mining, tunnelling and railway indus-tries. The Cavimeter, a product patented by Malmfälten, enables essentially any industry that employs steel bolting for sup-port to know that its anchors are fully embedded in a cemen-titious material that is so paramount for its effective installa-tion. The product currently finds uses in mining, tunnelling, civil works and geotechnical projects, where support is vital to safety, productivity and longevity.

The product uses a unique system of compressed gas that fills cavities in a cementitious anchor installation, and return-ing a curve describing the pressure change in the gas, to consistently and accurately show the percentage of the an-chor that is embedded. Field tests done by Malmfälten have consistently returned accurate results, proving the real-world capabilities of the product.

NOVATOR CONSULTING GROUP Novator Consulting Group was established in 1986 with the aim of offering consul-tancy services and systems to support decision-making and control within economics, technology and administration. ROCKMA SYSTEM ROCKMA System AB specializes in rock characterization based on drill monitoring (Measurement While Drilling) in production environments. Parameters such as penetration rate, thrust, percussive pressure, etc., are logged and ana-lyzed in real time to enable detailed rock mass information to be obtained directly from the drilling process. This technol-ogy provides highly accurate and precise information about the rock mass. The drilling process and rock interpretation is displayed to the operator and also sent directly to the mine offices for real-time viewing. The rock properties calculated include uniaxial compressive strength, fracture frequency in percent or RQD and water conditions in the rock mass. This information can then be integrated to provide blasting prop-erties, rock support requirements, ore/waste boundaries and many other benefits. The ROCKMA System also includes drill monitoring, drill management and a GPS positioning system for the drill rig.

ROCKMA System AB is headquartered in Skellefteå, Sweden and it also has a regional office in Tomelilla, Sweden. In 2011, ROCKMA partnered with a South African company, Ground-work Consulting (Pty) Ltd, to make the technology available in Southern Africa.
