Proposals within scopeProjects that aim to develop new methods of prevention, treatment or relief for people who are at risk for or already suffer from any widespread disease.

Projects applying for funding must fulfil the three criteria below: » Innovative – build on new knowledge and contain a significant

amount of risk

» Growth-inducing - contribute to growth of companies or create significant quality improvement within public healthcare, and for the patient

» Application-oriented – solve a problem/need of both national and global importance as well as have a clear implementation plan for the solution (e.g. within public healthcare)

Widespread diseasesA widespread disease (folksjukdom) is defined as a disease or a disease-group with prevalence in the population exceeding 1%. Diseases of mild character and/or short duration are not included.

Examples of diseases that are covered in this call are: » diabetes type 2» cardiovascular diseases » obesity» cancers» autoimmune disorders (e.g. diabetes type 1, rheumatoid arthritis SLE)» dementia and other age dependent neurological diseases» mental illness» chronic pain» musculoskeletal diseases (e.g. osteoporosis)» asthma, allergies and the lung disease COPD (covering chronic bronchitis

and emphysema)

Proposals within scope» Innovative: Based on new knowledge, new technology, new models, new

tools or a new application to handle patient logistics, which distinguishes the project significantly from existing solutions on the market today. The project is to include a significant level of invention that could lead to more drastic and pioneering innovations. The technical or scientific component can be a major part, but this is not a requirement. Instead, the application on the market can be the innovative aspect. Projects must, however, always contain a significant amount of risk, for which a substantial amount of public capital is needed.

» Growth-inducing: Be able to contribute directly or indirectly to the growth of companies or organisations within the strategic innovation area, or to create significant quality, value or efficiency benefits within public healthcare, and for the patient.

» Application-oriented: Based on applied research with innovations at very early stages of development, where there are still clear commercial, technical and developmental uncertainties and risks.
