High-precision drives and systems up to 500 watts. Brushless and brushed DC motors with the unique ironless maxon winding. The modular system also includes planetary, spur and special gearheads, feedback devices and control electronics. High-tech CIM and MIM components are produced in a spe-cial competence center.

maxon motor is involved in NASA Mars expeditions. After supplying the drive motors for the Mars vehi-cle Sojourner in the 1997 Mars expedition, maxon has also in 2003 supplied the motors for the two Mars rovers "Spirit" and "Opportunity". Each vehicle is equipped with 39 maxon motors: Motors for driv-ing the wheels and robot arms, for the steering mechanism and for controlling the cameras. The motors themselves are standard products with diameters of 20 and 25 mm that deliver an efficiency level of more than 90%. Minor modifications were required to enable them to cope with the harsh conditions. The equipment has to be able to withstand temperature changes on the surface of Mars, which can range from around -120°C to +25°C, vibrations and the special atmosphere.

The INTEGRAL Science Data Center (ISDC) is primarily the interface between the INTEGRAL (Inter-

national Gamma Ray Laboratory) scientific payload and the astronomical community in Europe and in

the world. This centre processes the INTEGRAL data to the point where scientists can meaningfully in-

terpret them. INTEGRAL is an ESA Mission with a collaboration of Russia and the US. It provides high-

quality data on many types of cosmic sources from a few keV to several MeV. INTEGRAL is operated

Page 28: Swiss ESA Contractors · design, radio propagation channel, modulation and coding, protocol stack and IP-based network layers. Long term experience in development of simulation tools,

28/33

as an observatory with most of the time available to the world astronomical community at large.

The ISDC developed a system to analyse the data of INTEGRAL and to distribute the results to the ob-

servers. The ISDC also stores and makes available the archive of the INTEGRAL results. Since

gamma ray sources are very variable in time, the ISDC conducts near real time data analysis in order

to be able to modify the observation timeline when interesting events are observed.

The ISDC will provide support to the community with software products to analyse the data.

ISSI is an Institute of Advanced Studies in space sciences where scientists from all over the world

meet in a multi- and interdisciplinary setting to reach out for new scientific horizons. ISSI is a catalyst

and an international scientific joint venture.

From its beginning in 1995 to date, ISSI has focused its scientific and interdisciplinary activities on so-

lar system sciences, including connections to astrophysics, cosmology, and to Earth sciences.

ISSI is a non-profit organization founded under Swiss law with an initial endowment by the leading

Swiss space company Contraves Space AG. ESA, the Swiss Confederation, the Swiss National Sci-

ence Foundation, and the University of Bern provide the financial resources for ISSI's operation. ISSI's

original mandate was that of generating for relatively low cost more high-quality science from the pro-

jects conducted by the various space agencies.
