International Conclave of Entrepreneurs2012 Winter Retreat – Les Crosets, Switzerland

Page 2: Swiss ICE
Page 3: Swiss ICE

We are fortunate to not only be living through an industrial revolution, but driving it.

The International Conclave of Entrepreneurs - ICE is a select group of founders and key facilitators of the European start-up ecosystem who share mutual trust and a passion to build.

We came together to share entrepreneurial insights, lessons learned the hard way (or, occasionally, the easy way), and in the process have forged lifelong friendships.

The group has since has evolved into a series of retreats, workshops and an active online discussion list with passionate participants sharing a sense of community.

Google’s mission is to organize the world‘s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

Beginning in 1996, Stanford University graduate students Larry Page and Sergey Brin built a search engine called “BackRub” that used links to determine the importance of individual web pages. By 1998 they had formalized their work, creating the company you know today as Google.

Since then, Google has grown by leaps and bounds. From offering search in a single language we now offer dozens of products and services—including various forms of advertising and web applications for all kinds of tasks—in scores of languages. And starting from two computer science students in a university dorm room, we now have thousands of employees and offices around the world.

Our philosophy -- Ten things we know to be true

“The perfect search engine,” says co-founder Larry Page, “would understand exactly what you mean and give back exactly what you want.” When Google began, you would have been pleasantly surprised to enter a search query and immediately find the right answer. Google became successful precisely because we were better and faster at finding the right answer than other search engines at the time.

But technology has come a long way since then, and the face of the web has changed. Recognizing that search is a problem that will never be solved, we continue to push the limits of existing technology to provide a fast, accurate and easy-to-use service that anyone seeking information can access, whether they’re at a desk in Boston or on a phone in Bangkok. We’ve also taken the lessons we’ve learned from search to tackle even more challenges.

As we keep looking towards the future, these core principles guide our actions:

1. Focus on the user and all else will follow.2. It’s best to do one thing really, really well.3. Fast is better than slow.4. Democracy on the web works.5. You don’t need to be at your desk to need an answer.6. You can make money without doing evil.7. There’s always more information out there.8. The need for information crosses all borders.9. You can be serious without a suit.10. Great just isn’t good enough.

A lot has changed since the first Google search engine appeared. But some things haven’t changed: our dedication to our users and our belief in the possibilities of the Internet itself.

Balderton has a track record of helping entrepreneurs build substantial businesses – with more $250m+ exits in the past five years than any other European venture firm.

We have backed over 100 entrepreneurs in the last decade, and continue to look for outstanding entrepreneurs who share our passion for disrupting large markets and building long-lasting, great companies.

We invest early stage, but, with nearly $2 billion of committed capital, we have the resources to support companies for the long term.

But we do more than just invest. Our partners have founded and grown companies from one to thousands of employees; and we bring that real-world company-building experience, as well as our extensive network of relationships across multiple industries and continents, to the entrepreneurs we partner with.

Balderton was founded in 2000 by Benchmark Capital, the leading US venture firm. In 2007 Balderton formally became independent, although we maintain close ties with our Silicon Valley sibling.

After surviving the nuclear winter following the burst of the Web 1.0 bubble to get the industrial online auction startup he co-founded publicly-listed in London, Alex believed that building business in Europe could be more rewarding and, frankly, more fun if entrepreneurs helped each other out. Along with the other founding ICErs, he is thrilled with the community that is evolving, the opportunities Europe offers, and exhilarated by the cocktail of founders, investors, sports and good company that ICE is helping to facilitate. Alex is co-founder of freestyle and freeride ski company Faction Skis, CEO of digital marketing firm Latitude, and an investor in web startups - some in the ICE community like Skimlinks, BraveNewTalent, Brainient and Conversocial.

Have spent the last year setting up Inter-Resolve, a mediation business using an ethical and tech heavy approach to solving the corrupt personal injury industry in the UK. Now passing on the reigns to go and look into some new startup ideas.I spent a couple of very exciting years at Balderton Capital, covering a range of cool companies and areas including consumer internet, new media and mobile.Prior to joining Balderton, I worked with McKinsey & Company, focusing on telecom and media sectors in the UK, India and the Middle East, and prior to that I spent time with a number of tech start-ups and financial services companies.I also did a bit of teaching at Stanford when I thought that was the most effective way to change the world!

Andrew is a serial entrepreneur whose interests include writing and film. He is a passionate advocate of mobile technologies and consumer internet services. After creating an irreverent magazine at school, Andrew set up an IT consultancy; his college were his first client. Later start-ups have included web development company (worldwidecity) which he sold in 2001, the world’s first online digital video news archive (BritishPathe), interactive fitness website (Intraining), world’s first location based mobile social network (playtxt) and personalization platform (Rummble). Today Andrew consults, advises and is on the board of Founder’s group ICE, MLOVE.COM Conference and FailCon 2012 Europe.

Richard Titus

Rich, 22, is the Founder and CEO of Floxx. His business originated from his days at UCL where he built a website called FitFinder which allowed students to flirt with one another in libraries. Floxx now concentrates on building a range of mobile apps and websites both internally and externally. To date he has raised $500k and employs 6 people in their London HQ.

Richard is a serial entrepreneur, investor and strategic adviser to a variety of firms in the UK, Europe, Latin America and the USA through his investment vehicle Octavian Ventures. Until July 2010, Richard was the CEO of Associated Northcliffe Digital (www.and.co.uk) the digital consumer division of Daily Mail and General Trust (LSE: DMGT). He oversaw a portfolio of European digital businesses

including Jobsite, Findaproperty, Globrix, Motors.co.uk, dating aggregator Allegran, and Teletext. Previously he was a Future Media Controller at the BBC responsible for the award winning BBC homepage, Mobile service and led the team responsible for the redesign of its website, Mobile and iTV services, as well as BBC iPlayer. He has (co-) founded seven firms in his entrepreneurial career; including Razorfish LA and more recently its competitor Schematic which was purchased by WPP in 2007. He also exec-produced Sundance Feature film winners On_line and Who Killed the Electric Car?

By winter, Rich is a skier, occasional telemarker and not often enough monoskier. After a season in Jackson Hole ‘shredding the gnar gnar’ (don’t ask), Rich has a terrible skiing vocab, but still loves shredding steep and deep. Ask: to see his 80s-tastic onesy. Don’t ask: why his skis curve the wrong way.Rich has an identical twin who sometimes misbehaves.

This is the biggest Ice trip to date. This is the second trip we have helped to organise and we look forward to catching up with old and new face alike, on the slopes (or in the bar with a jagerbomb!).

Situated at 1,670m above sea level in a sunny bowl above Champery, Les Crosets is the ideal jumping-off point to explore the whole of the Portes du Soleil. This includes Avoriaz and Morgins, and further afield, Chatel and Morzine. Over the last few years, Les Crosets has undergone a major transformation from small mountain farm community to a high class ski-in/ski-out resort which also offers excellent summer holiday options as well.

Champery is just a cable car ride away and the Thermal Baths in Levey des Bains can also be accessed easily. The Post Bus connects Les Crosets with trains in Val d’Illiez, enabling you to explore the entire Valais region. In summer, it’s possible to mountain bike or walk long distances and explore large areas by taking advantage of the chair lifts, and in Winter you can ski over as far as Les Gets.
