City breaks are a good way to get to know people and understand how they think. In a city, everything is close by: you feel the pulse of life around you and the melting pot of cultures. When exploring a city, the hidden gems are just as important as the famous sights and landmarks. I enjoy living, eating and exploring like a local – even if it’s just for a few days. And I’m not the only one. Here, you’ll find many interesting stories from people who live in Swiss cities, how they have helped to influence them – and how they have been influenced by them. Embark on a journey of discovery and experience Swiss cities through the eyes of a local. Happy exploring!

Bern: swimming in the Aare
We’re all equals in the water. Everyone in Bern – from workmen to professors – goes to the Aare in the summer. Even prominent politicians can be seen here in their swim-wear. MySwitzerland shows what makes swimming in the river so popular as well as the best places to jump in.

“In the summer, we like to spend our father-daughter day in the Marzili.”
Aare swimming course organisers Angela Scalese and Bernhard Fleuti:
“Swimming in the Aare is a unique experience. Safety is a key concern for us.”
9
Alec von Graffenried, mayor of Bern: “When I can, I travel between meetings by bike and then I jump into the Aare,
preferably several times a day.”
The people of Bern have an ongoing love affair with the Aare river. In no other city can you enjoy such clear, cool fresh water
while gently drifting past the picturesque Old Town of Bern – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Urban swimming is a major part of the city’s culture. Nearly everyone enjoys a refreshing dip during the summer months. But you don’t simply go to “the Aare”. Regulars have their favourite places to jump in, drift along and get out: from point to point. And if getting in at the pebble beach of the Eichholz camping site is too easy, take a deep breath and dive straight into the cool water: a favourite spot among locals is Schönausteg, near Dählhölzli Zoo. Speaking of locals: even the Mayor of Bern, Alec von Graffenried, often swims in the Aare in summer. “It’s pure relaxation for me”, he says. Staying safe in the Aare Not everyone feels instantly at ease in the current of the Aare. That’s why Angela Scalese is actively committed to ensuring that people have fun and stay safe: “Many young people don’t know how to swim in rivers.” Since 2017, she has worked with Bernhard Fleuti from the Swiss Lifesavers Society SLRG to organise special Aare swimming courses on safety and how to behave in the river under the slogan “Stadtwellen – sicher y d’Aare” (City waves – staying safe in the Aare). “Even good swimmers need to know their limits as well as the safe places to get in and out of the water”, explains Angela. stadtwellen.ch

Sam Keller’s unwavering commitment to the museum and Basel as a city of culture is the reason why people from all over the world can marvel at the prestigious exhibitions at Fondation Beyeler. “Swimming in the Rhine is my favourite way to unwind and switch off. By drifting down the river on my back, I can enjoy the unique panoramic view of Basel’s Old Town.”
14 mySwitzerland Swiss urban feeling
“Cool off in the Rhine, then enjoy a beer on the river bank with friends. That’s a typical example of the Basel way of life.”
“I take a Rhine taxi from the port in the ‘Three countries corner’. One of my go-to routes leads from the port to the Tinguely Museum. The beach there is a favourite place to start swimming in the Rhine.”
“The entire city flocks to the Rhine in the summer. I like to cool down shortly before sunset. It feels wonderful to let the current carry you under the bridge, past Basel cathedral.”

Franziska Bründler is the founder and managing director of Fidea Design. The label sells unusual, aesthetic, intelligent prod-ucts, many of which are designed locally and manu-factured in Switzerland by social enterprises. Since 2009, she has organised “DesignSchenken” and ad-vises companies on design and communication.
Franziska Bründler, how would you describe Lucerne in three words?
Wonderful. Kitschy. Cosy.
What inspires you most about Lucerne? Lucerne offers a bit of everything. I can
relax in natural surroundings, which feed my creativity back in the city.
What’s your favourite part of the city? The Bruch district 1
behind the train station – where cattle used to be
sold right up to the early 70s – is an extremely
lively area. Many small, innovative shops have
cropped up here in recent years. It is home to an exciting mix of classic
3

cuisine peppered with fresh, cheeky concepts.
How do you start the perfect day in Lucerne? I enjoy stop-ping at Café Bar Piccolino 2 in the Bruch district on the way to work. I travel by bike, of course – the perfect way
to get around in the city.
And the perfect end to the perfect day? In the summer, nothing beats a drink with a view of Pilatus from the sun terrace of Seebad Luzern 3 . From the outside, it looks some-what like a wooden box. But inside, you can feel the charm of the wonderful Belle-Epoque public baths. Interested in more

From Lucerne straight into
nature Marketing professional Michelle Kälin from Swiss Travel System AG loves the fact that you can escape into nature in no time at all by public transport in Switzerland. She tells us more.
“Lucerne is one of my favourite cities. Everything there is within easy distance. The ship landing, for example, is just five minutes from the station. I board the MS Diamant and head for Vitznau, and soon I’m standing at the foot of the Rigi. The fire-red train takes me past rustic huts and luscious meadows where cows are grazing. How idyllic! Once I get to the top, it takes me just 20 minutes on foot to get to the Alp Chäserenholz natural oasis. The farm offers not just delicious mountain cheese, but also a special experience: Alpine wellness.
I indulge in pure relaxation in the outdoor whirlpool and take in the great view of the surrounding peaks: just one of the day’s many highlights.”
Michelle Kälin recommends getting a Swiss Travel Pass for travel through Switzerland by train, bus or boat.MySwitzerland.com/ticket

St. Gallen: textile design
Martin Leuthold has been a textile designer in St. Gallen for 45 years. Where does he find inspiration after all this time and how does he turn what he sees into fabrics?Text: Valentina Janner Photos: Ivo Scholz
29
T he placid waters of the “Drei Weieren” glow in the morning light. The air is filled with the scent of midsummer. At dawn,
the historical swimming pools above the St. Gallen Old Town are still empty. Martin Leuthold takes his camera, as he always does on his strolls. “I am always drawn to small details that many others simply take for granted”, says the 65yearold designer as he takes a snap. His subject: the blackandwhite design of the window blinds in an wooden bath house. The creative director of traditional textile firm Jakob Schlaepfer associates more with the ponds than you would expect at first glance.
Martin especially enjoys discussing ideas with his good friend Felix Lehner from the “Sitterwerk” – a material archive, art library and studio house.
“I find inspiration for new fabrics wherever I go, but especially in the great outdoors.”Martin Leuthold, textile designer
30 mySwitzerland Swiss urban feeling
“The artificial ponds were built in the 17th century to supply the town’s textile industry and its bleaching products.” Martin smiles as he tells me his career doesn’t quite go that far back. Martin Leuthold has worked as a designer since 1973. Over the years, he has supplied high fashion brands such as Dior, Armani and Chanel with over 60,000 fabrics. Their creations have been worn by people such as Michelle Obama, Nicole Kidman – and even the Queen of England. “Eight to twelve employees work on the creative side at Schlaepfer. The volume of work is enormous, with a new collection released every three months and over 1,200 fabrics per year.” How can such a small team generate so much creativity? “Inspiration can be found everywhere”, states Martin. “You simply have to live your life with your eyes open.” New ideas are constantly proposed and discussed within the team. Perhaps the three ponds will soon inspire yet another design theme. Maybe even on the red carpet!
In his workshop in St. Gallen, Martin creates fabrics and designs based on photos, sketches and samples for the catwalks in Milan, New York and Paris.
Guo Pei
31
Fashion designers often travel to St. Gallen to assess the fabric in person or to check how feasible their ideas are. When Guo Pei from China visited St. Gallen Cathedral with Martin, she was amazed by its opulence. Her reaction: “Now I un-derstand why you are able to create such beautiful fabrics in St. Gallen.” The designer has decided to dedicate her next collection entirely to the cathedral. Martin and his team will of course be producing the fabric for this collection.
Designer Guo Pei, age 51, was named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2016.
The importance of nature as a source of inspiration is reflected in many fabrics that Martin has created over the past 45 years.
“Many of my creations are based on the rich history of St. Gallen. But tradition is not sacrosanct – it has to keep on being developed.”Martin Leuthold, textile designer

Winterthur: Skills Park
With the Skills Park in Winterthur, BMX champion Roger Rinderknecht turned his dream into reality. Opened at the end of 2016, the park in the Sulzer district is now a major attraction in Switzerland’s cycling capital. Text: Lucas Roos Photos: Markus Bühler
On the go
Until the late 80s, this used to be the Sulzer Brothers industrial park and was off limits to the public. Now, people come here to sip coffee, ride their bikes and study. The Sulzer site has been transformed into a trendy district with an exciting mix of old, repurposed industrial warehouses and modern developments. Building names such as Sieb10, Kesselhaus, Pionierpark, Werkhaus and Lokwerk hark back to its manufacturing past.

Rinderknecht on the Skills Park
Roger Rinderknecht, how did you come up with the idea to create the Skills Park?As a child, I was very active, and my BMX was a great outlet for my energy. This sparked my dream of some day creating a space that both riders and fami-lies could enjoy. Why did you choose Winter-thur?For me, it had to be Winterthur, my hometown. The Sulzer district also has a massive ware-house, which is hard to f ind elsewhere: 110 metres long, 34 wide and 12 high. That is 6,000m2 over two floors for sports, games and fun.
Why should families come to the Skills Park?Because exercise is fun – with or without wheels. Here, young people quickly discover that there is more to life than com-puter games.
Roger Rinderknecht, aged 37, is a former worldclass mountain biker and BMX champion. He and his partner Edina Banyoczki run the Skills Park in Winterthur.

W hen Dawa Sherpa runs up the mountain, he could be flying. Where others reach their limits, the 48yearold
is in his element. With fascinating poise and speed, he races along the narrow footpaths of Geneva’s La Salève mountain. His sport is trail running. Its extreme form is the ultramarathon. In this discipline, Dawa has won almost every race there is.
“The steps, the hills and the lake make Geneva the perfect place to train for the extreme challenges of the sport”, says Dawa. His favourite place, however, is La Jonction. Dawa likes to take a break from his run where the milkywhite Arve joins with the turquoise Rhone.
“This is a somewhat meditative place”, says the man who grew up in a Nepalese mountain village and lived six years in a Buddhist monastery as a child. “During that time, I learned many things that still help me every day.” Sharing has always been part of his life – as is giving back to society. He does this through a humanitarian organisation he founded to support earthquake victims in Nepal.
Geneva, home to the UN and the Red Cross, is therefore the logical adopted hometown for Dawa in two ways: here, the man from the mountains of Nepal has matured into the king of mountain runners and a lifesaver for those who need it most. “A city where nature is so close and humanity is lived out on every corner – you’ll probably only find that in Geneva.”

The best way to get to know a city is through the stomach. A perfect example: the baguettes of Seri Wada, from Zurich. A few years ago, the 46yearold switched from banker to baker. He uses simple ingredients and passion to bake 60 baguettes each day and delivers them personally by bike to his clients. His baguettes are considered the best in the city, but that’s not enough for him: “My dream is to take part in the ‘Grand Prix de la baguette de tradition française de la ville de Paris’ – and win.” For the perfectionist, the goal of baking the best baguette is still a long way off.

Visit MySwissExperience to read more about this and 699 other tours focused on nature, adventure, culture, cuisine and knowledge. Get to know your local hosts here and actively experience Switzerland with them.

Best you see them from above as well.
Swiss cities are beautiful.
Enjoy highest Swiss quality and hospitality before you even arrive. You can reserve the coveted window seats in advance, by the way.
