Every day there are achievements by the students which are justifiably praised. Academic success, sporting prowess, musical accomplishment, dramatic performance are all part and parcel of the achievements of our students. But it is not just in school that they achieve great things. I am frequently reminded of and amazed by the many wonderful activities SWPS girls get up to outside school by parents who kindly email me to let me know of what they are doing. Acknowledging achievements is a crucial aspect of school and education. It drives and enhances motivation as well as cementing confidence and resilience. Even if that acknowledgement is small, we, as teachers and parents, know that it will develop self-respect, happiness, and confidence. Indeed there is a growing body of research that suggests developing positive emotions through celebration regularly will lead to psychological well-being, resilience and even living longer! Of course, achievements come in all shapes and sizes and while they are all worth acknowledging, some will be more meaningful to you and your daughter than others. So if you feel that your daughter has achieved something outside of school which is worth celebrating let us know. Believe me it is always a pleasure to receive such emails and I am always thrilled to publish achievements on our newsletter. The SWPS Boat Club owes much of its success to former coaches Liz Bernard and Sara Sweeney for their vision and hard work in the early days of setting up the club, along with many of the families of the first SWPS Rowers. Many of these friends of the Boat Club joined us on Friday for what was a super evening of fun, nostalgia and of course……rowing! The light held long enough for the girls to get back on the water and we all joined them at the river bank, glass in hand! Despite some of them not having rowed since leaving school up to eight years ago, it all came back to them and they cut a fine picture on the Thames! Judging by some of the hilarity and screeching we heard in the distance it seems that they are still those SWPS girls at heart! I’m sure that this is the first of many alumnae events to take place at the Boathouse, as we see the Club go from strength to strength. S Kassir Rio 2016 Medallist Opens SWPS Boat Club Only the weather was miserable when, on the afternoon of Saturday 10 September, we welcomed Zoe De Toledo to unveil the plaque formally opening our boat club. Zoe was the cox in the silver-medal-winning Women’s Rowing Eight, who put up such an exciting fight in the final in Rio last month. Her diminutive figure was not dwarfed by the crowds who turned up, despite heavy rain, to hear her talk about her experiences and to unveil the plaque. She said that she was envious of the boat club, and wished that she had been able to train out of such a marvellous facility. She recognised that the school now runs the largest female rowing programme in Great Britain, and hoped that they produce their own Olympic medallists in the future. With endless patience, she posed with visitors, allowing them to wear, stroke and generally admire her silver medal. The younger children were especially excited to have their photos taken! Over a hundred members of the Sir William Perkins’s School community turned out for the celebration, showing that anyone interested in rowing has to have a strong constitution and weather-proof clothing! Car Decorating for Charity

Over the past week a group of creative Sixth Formers

have been spray painting and decorating a car which

is being used for a Banger Rally Race. The students

have worked each evening to produce a fantastic

Disney theme mural alongside the large black Ford

Galaxy.

Mr Mulligan, (father of Erika Mulligan, Y8), asked the

SWPS Art Department to help decorate the car. Mr

Mulligan and his work colleagues at Credit Suisse are

taking part in the Banger Rally Race in support of the

UK Charity NSPCC. The challenge of the Banger Rally

is to purchase a car for £500, decorate the car

according to a theme, and to drive the car to a

European destination, this year in Poland, completing

a number of challenges along the way. All costs are

borne by the participants, all donations go to the

charity. So far this is a very successful event has

raised nearly £11,000 for a very deserving cause!!

This exciting project was a challenge for the SWPS

students and Mrs. Ferris as none of them had ever

drawn or decorated a car like this before! The students

shared the task of spray painting and drawing on the

different Disney characters and they then started to

master the art of spray painting. The characters which

were created included The Little Mermaid, Bambie,

Simba, Mickey Mouse, Tinker Bell, Jerry, Piglet, Olaf

the snowman, and on the roof of the car of was Ursula

from The Little Mermaid. Mythili Chawan (Y9) drew the

image of Ursula which Marie Marshall (S6) then

recreated for her. The students really enjoyed the

project and worked extremely hard, especially during

the hot weather and even when one student got stung

by a wasp!!

Mr Mulligan and his colleagues set off for the challenge

very early this morning from central London, we wish

them all the luck for the race and hope they raise lots

of money for the NSPCC. If you would like to donate

money to this cause or see how they are getting on in

the race, please use the link below.

Library Lines The beginning of the school year is a good time to look back and find out which books were Year 7’s (current Year 8’s)

favourites over the course of the last year, and here they are!

1. Girl, missing by Sophie McKenzie 2. Insurgent by Veronica Roth 3. All my secrets by Sophie McKenzie 4. The bad beginning by Lemony Snicket 5. Geek girl : geek drama by Holly Smale

Year 7 Bowling

Nearly all the new Year 7 girls went with their tutors (Mrs Searle, Mrs Wragg, Miss Koegler & Mr Alexander), Miss Hudspith, Mrs Tommasi and Mrs Stebbings to Guildford

Spectrum last Friday after school. They had an amazing time bowling and thoroughly

enjoyed the pizza and curly fries! Some of the bowling techniques were extremely entertaining. Capturing

decent photos of them was a challenge at times because they were all so busy socialising with each other. This was the aim of the trip so it was a huge success and it was a lovely way to round off their first full week at SWPS!
