OverviewOverviewOverviewOverview

As part of ECOPETROL’s Industrial Services Master Plan (ISMP) - in Spanish, Plan Maestro de Servicios

Industriales (PMSI) - which was undertaking at Barrancabermeja Refinery and Petrochemical Complex, a

new brackish water desalination plant was installed and integrated to exiting water treatment plants to

produce high quality boiler feed water as well as potable water meeting the project specifications.

Following an international public bid and qualification process, our company, SWT, was the selected

qualified system supplier to provide the advanced water treatment plant-system using a combination of

Ultrafiltration (UF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology processes.

We are very proud of our involvement in this project.

In line with Ecopetrol’s refining productivity strategic objectives and its environmental approach, the ISMP

was conceived as a necessary investment to sustain them.

The ISMP included the upgrade & expansion of the main industrial auxiliary services, such as water, air,

electricity, and steam production, to improve the reliability of their generation, to maximize

efficiency and to reduce environmental impact.

The new UF/RO plant is one piece of this envisioned plan which contributes to these goals, especially with

regard of managing the water resource. Our company has worked closely with our client and local partner

to overcome challenges, such as space limitations, and provided a solution which met or exceeded the

project’s requirements in terms of local sourcing, water quality, and water production levels (for current

and future conditions), among others .

The Solu6onThe Solu6onThe Solu6onThe Solu6on Our executed EP contract included engineering design, fabrication,

and supply of Ultrafiltration (UF) and Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis

(BWRO) Systems as well as the ancillary equipment and supporting

operational systems, such as chemical dosing skid, UF and RO cleaning system, and PLC control systems.

Installation supervision, system testing, commissioning & start-up, and operator training services were

provided by our field service team.

The design of UF/RO plant was carried out considering

current and future conditions with the aim/intention of:

♦ achieve the greatest operating flexibility,

♦ install and put into operation the new units without

affecting the operation of the Refinery,

♦ have a plant ready for future service, when existing

dual media filters, and softening unit are eventually

put out of operation.

The UF system consists of three 3 trains. Each UF train

Includes eight (8) submerged skids using PVDF hollow

fiber membrane with a capacity of 2333 GPM to cater to the flow conditions

(Min., Nor., Max.) and a recovery of 95%. A UF pilot study at the site was

conducted by our team to finalize and confirm the design of UF full scale

system. We included the UF membranes for the future expansion to ensure

a lower loading rate for the current phase, hence extending the membrane life.

The RO unit is a skid-mounted double pass BWRO system with three (3) trains

and an overall recovery of 75 %. Each RO train has a capacity, at present, of 1374 GPM with

additional extra slots for future pressure vessels to be added to the system for an increase flow production

of 1500 GPM. The system is designed in a manner where

the first and second RO passes are interlocked to run and

shut down simultaneously.

To address the limited space, the entire UF/RO Plant was

laid out in the same building, distributed on two (2) floor

levels. The RO trains were

designed to minimize the

plant footprint by stacking

the pressure vessels skids

on top of each other.
