A TRIP TO CAMERON COUNTRY

Still browsing through the Programmes (only a couple of hundred or so more to go) and a match in the First Round Proper of the FA Vase in 2014 that paired Newport with Hook Norton in Oxfordshire. The Hellenic League side had defeated Tadley at home in the previous round and now provided the opposition for Newport’s opening game in the Competition. Hook Norton is a small and attractive, largely residential town some nineteen miles north of Witney and five miles north west of Chipping Norton, the area in which David Cameron resides/resided with the “Chipping Norton Set” and represented in Parliament. The ground was not the easiest to find, one or two local residents when asked had no knowledge of same, but when finally located was a typical Hellenic league ground with little concerns for the niceties of Ground Grading. If you imagine the ground as nine squares, a la Sudoku puzzle, the smart Clubhouse was in the top right hand square with the pitch occupying the middle and bottom squares on the left hand side with the area in front

of the clubhouse the cricket ground. It was a fair walk from the Dressing Room, which were in the Clubhouse, to the pitch which was separated from the cricket ground by a single rope strung between numerous posts. There were signs in the Clubhouse and on the corner of the ground stating that standing on the roped off side was “not allowed under any circumstances”. If the attendance on the day was one hundred then seventy per cent of same stood along the rope, the majority complete with pints of beer! [Mention of Ground Grading and back to last week’s piece involving the Western Isles, one of which is Eriskay. If you have a moment google Eriskay FC and the pictures of their ground. No hassle with Ground Grading, people in dug outs, admission charges, covered accommodation, hard standing etc. Absolutely brilliant!] The home side were mid table in the Hellenic League West while Newport were a step higher and actually leading the Wessex Premier Division at the time and on a sloping and rather bumpy pitch the difference was obvious as the Island side ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Scott Jones and Tom McInnes, both, from memory, in the second half. Memory also suggests that Newport introduced a young Substitute late in the game who quickly collected a red card but lest memory is wrong mention of his name is spared. Other long standing Island names in the visitors line up on the day were Gary Streeter, Darren Powell and Iain Seabrook. Newport defeated Loxwood from Sussex in the next round 3-2, Jones again finding his name on the scoresheet, before losing to perpetual Vase rivals Ascot United in the confines of the famous Racecourse, conceding three without reply. Conversation with the Hook Norton Secretary – he was also Chairman and largely responsible for a very good Programme – on the day elicited the universal problem of lack of helpers off the field and two seasons later they withdrew from the Hellenic League for that reason. There was no football at the ground for a season before the Club reformed in the Witney & District League Division 3 and they currently top Division, still some way short of their previous status. Sadly, not an unfamiliar occurrence across the football spectrum and we wish them well for the future.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

John Gorman writes ANDOVER NEW STREET 3-1 PETERSFIELD TOWN IF Andover New Street achieve their aim of promotion to the Premier Division at the season’s end, they may

look upon this game as a defining moment as they conjured up three points from a seemingly hopeless position to the delight of the majority of the hundred or so people present. After receiving the January Club of the Month Award prior to kick off it appeared after forty five minutes that the perceived “curse” of same had struck again, but the second half was very much a different story. Kitman Ken Hardy and Physio Pete Tunney are shown here collecting the award. With the customary Respect proceedings abandoned before kick-off the home side made very much the brighter start with visiting keeper Matt Petts saving at Shane Lock’s feet in the opening seconds. Reece Rusher won two corners in quick succession and a free kick was cleared after a mighty scramble in the six yard box but the anticipated goal did not come as Petersfield worked their way in to the game and then took the lead, albeit still rather against the run of play, after twenty minutes. Jazz Beavis was cautioned for a challenge just inside his own half and in a sense suffered further punishment as the free kick was hoisted in to

the area and the tall Jordan GEDDES rose highest to loop his header over goalkeeper Chris Wing. Worse was to follow for both Beavis and New Street as Beavis immediately launched himself in to another challenge and collected a second yellow card, though the evening could have done without the unedifying sight of half the visiting side crowding the referee and pointing to the Dressing Rooms. Rafa Ramos was inches too high and then substituted – sacrificed may be a better word - as the home side were forced to bolster their midfield. Petersfield’s Marvin Orepo, whose pace troubled the home defence all evening, broke clear on the left with his low cross causing mild panic in the area and a Rusher free kick at the other end was straight at Petts. Luke Hooper made ground only to be pulled back by the offside flag and when Orepo and Matt Law combined for the visitors Wing saved bravely at the latter’s feet to bring an incident packed opening half to a close. HT 0-1

New Street juggled their ranks on the re-start with Matt Scott moving in to midfield and, as in the first half, started the brighter. Rusher saw one shot saved and was too high with another before Law broke away only for Wing to save with his legs and Orepo was stopped by a superb tackle by Jake Curtis as the visitors demonstrated they were still in the game. But a mistake after fourteen minutes cost them dearly. A routine long ball was totally missed by a defender and the speedy HOOPER raced clear to slot the ball past Petts. All square. Rusher limped off, a seemingly further blow for the home side, and play was end to end with Shane Long too high for Street and substitute Will Webb dragging a shot across goal from a promising position at the other end. Adam Pearson came on for his New Street debut and the game entered the last five minutes with a sharing of the points looking likely, despite a neutral spectator close by insisting that New Street would win and three minutes from time he was proved right. Scott headed the ball down from a free kick and HOOPER initially juggled it over his shoulder before turning and lifting it over the keeper. A class goal from a very promising player who then completed his hat trick in stoppage time with another cool finish as the goalkeeper advanced. A sterling performance by the home side and whilst the plaudits go to Hooper the game was otherwise decided in midfield , an area which Petersfield dominated in the first half but became Street’s domain after the break. An entertaining evening and credit to all – players and officials alike. There were yellow cards but they were warranted and that is all one asks in any game. FT 3-1 Mike Robins writes VERWOOD TOWN 3-1 FAWLEY ENTERTAINING game that was perhaps closer than the score suggests, with the visitors perhaps unlucky not to have opened their account in the first half, but the opening goals went the way of the Potters that saw Callum BUTLER on the edge of the penalty area and the ball sat up nicely for him to strike it first time into the bottom corner. The main threat for the Oilers was Tom Munday and he tested the home defence on a number of occasions with perhaps the best chance on ten minutes when the onrushing Lewis Connors stumbled as the ball reached him and the chance was gone, Munday then spooned the ball over after a good pass from Declan Hartigan caught the home defence out. Verwood extended their lead on 13 minutes, when Owen NICHOLSON found the net from around 30 yards that Fawley keeper Reece Mitchell had no chance of reaching. Josh Hall came close to adding a third but they couldn’t find the net again in the half, but at the other end Christos Papakonstantinou threaded a ball through to Hartigan and his low cross was held by Shane Cooper under some pressure. On the half hour mark a low cross from the left by Connors was just too far in advance of any attacker and Hartigan also had a chance but couldn’t get the ball out from under his feet in order to get a shot off. As the half drew to a close Lee Vint had a solo effort that didn’t pay off and the Potters were grateful to see centre half Charlie Gajic clear the ball off the line. HT 2-0 Long periods of the second half belonged to Fawley with a decent free kick by Papakonstantinou well held by Cooper, and it was perhaps not a surprise that the next goal would be an away one. With 66 minutes gone HARTIGAN found himself unmarked just ten yards out and fired low beyond the reach of Cooper to bring the Oilers back into contention at 2-1. With the visitors pushing for a second Verwood were able to get behind them but couldn’t find a way of adding a third, Vint had two half chances before the game was sealed deep into added on time by BUTLER when his shot slipped through Mitchell’s gloves and trickled into the net. Fawley barely had time to re-start before the game was brought to a finish and Verwood are now unbeaten in six with four wins in that spell. FT 3-1

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

As ever in midweek a miscellany of matches and Competitions and for a welcome change most of them were played as the weather relented. Three games in the Sydenhams League Cup and defeat for the holders, Baffins Milton Rovers, at AFC Stoneham. The tie was switched to Stoneham’s ground because of the ongoing pitch problems at Baffins and the “host” went through by the odd goal in five. Scott Hills scored twice, taking his season’s tally in all Competitions to twenty four, with Callum Laycock also on target whist Tommy Tierney and Ashton Leigh netted for the holders. Hamble Club joined Stoneham in the last four after a 2-1 win at Alresford – John McKie netting both the visitors’ goals after Sam Tonks had opened the scoring for the home side. The third scheduled tie between Totton & Eling and Portland fell victim to a waterlogged pitch. Three games also in both the Premier Division and Division One. In the former Christchurch and Hamworthy switched their fixture to New Milton -thanks to all three Clubs for their efforts – and it was the “Hammers” who came out on top with James King scoring the only goal of the game. Fareham and Brockenhurst shared four goals and the points at Cams Alders with the trusty duo of Gary Austin and Simon Woods on the mark for the home side and Mitchell Speechley-Price netting twice for the Badgers. There was a feast of goals in the third game as Solent University switched their home game to the Forest and gained a welcome point in a three all draw with Conor Whiteley scoring twice for the “Bash”. In Division One Andover New Street were a goal down and a player down after some twenty five minutes against Petersfield at Foxcotte Park but came back to win 3-1 with a second half hat trick from Luke Hooper. Hythe & Dibden gained reward for a lot of work in ensuring the pitch was playable with a 2-1 defeat of Romsey – goals from Owen Fee and Mig Dark against one from Nathan Gray and, like New Street, stay very much in the promotion race. In the third game Verwood continued their recent good form in defeating Fawley 3-1 at Potterne Park with Callum Butler scoring twice.

On to the various Cup Competitions and congratulations to Bemerton Heath on reaching the Final of the Wiltshire Senior Cup. In a game played at Southern League Melksham’s ground they came back from two goals down at the break to defeat Western League Corsham Town 3-2, with Justin Bennett scoring twice and Jordan Matthews claiming the third. They now await the outcome of the other semi-final between Calne Town and Wroughton- which is scheduled for Wednesday 11 March at Melksham.

Fleet Town went through to the Third Round of the Aldershot Senior Cup with a first class 2-1 defeat of Ryman League Staines Town – goals from Aaron Redford and Malachi Thomas – while in the Salisbury Hospitals Cup Laverstock & Ford went through on penalties against Andover Town after neither side could muster a goal in the statutory ninety minutes. The other scheduled game in the same Competition between Amesbury and Salisbury was postponed, again because of a waterlogged pitch. Finally Horndean moved in to the last four of the Portsmouth Senior Cup with a 5-2 win at US Portsmouth with five different players contributing the goals. A welcome relief to get so many games played.

The FA is actively monitoring and adopting Government advice, and as a matter of good practice would recommend that Leagues and Clubs adopt the same approach. Please feel free to share this guidance. Given the current situation and guidance issued by the Public Health Authorities, the League feel it is advisable and prudent that the following be temporarily suspended until further notice: The pre-match handshakes as part of the RESPECT campaign by players and officials, Handshakes by captains and officials at the toss of the coin prior to the start of the match. Handshakes by players and officials after the final whistle. This will take effect from 3rd March until further notice. There may be more notices at short notice and the co-operation of clubs would of course be welcome during this difficult period.

IT IS THE SAME EVERYWHERE !

Each season the FA order the League to finish its season by the last Saturday in April. Because of the extraordinary weather we are currently experiencing, they have given us some leeway to use the midweek following April 25th to arrange games that do not involve promotion or relegation clubs. This is by far the worst season we have experienced since we’ve been operating under an end of season deadline and it is going to need some flexibility and co-operation from clubs to meet this requirement, including March 7th there are either 8 or 9 Saturdays left in the season – “either” because the writer is not sure as to whether the additional week almost grudgingly granted by the FA includes the Saturday, which falls in May. Taking the 14 Step Five Leagues all are struggling with the fixtures as the following will show:-

LEAGUE GAMES LEFT STRUGGLING CLUBS Combined Counties 242 1 Club with 17, 1 Club with 16 and 2 Clubs with 15 to play Eastern Counties 224 1 Club with 15 to play Essex Senior 202 1 Club with 13 to play Hellenic 182 2 Clubs with 15 to play Midland Football 268 2 Clubs with 16 and 2 Clubs with 15 to play North West Counties 220 1 Club with 14 and 3 Clubs with 13 to play Northern Counties East 264 1 Club with 13 and 1 Club with 15 to play Northern 232 1 Club with 12 to play Southern Combination 242 2 Clubs with 16 to play Southern Counties East 240 1 Club with 17 to play Spartan South Midlands 262 1 Club with 16 to play United Counties 256 2 Clubs with 16 to play Western 252 2 Clubs with 18 to play Wessex 228 1 Club with 16 to play

This actually simplifies things since the question of home and away fixtures has to be taken in to account or who has yet to play whom. ( I remember in my far off Sunday Football days when a very confident but rather inadequate Fixture Secretary reached the point where eight Clubs in a Twelve Club division all had one game to play – and all against the same Club!). All the above Leagues owe a huge debt to their Fixture Secretaries and to the cooperation of the Clubs. It is also interesting to note that the oft held assumption that the weather is always worse in the North does not seem to have greatly affected the Northern League. If anybody is interested enough to check this and finds errors then they are down to my mental arithmetic, doing it in a hurry and trying, without any great deal of success, to find whether it is still possible to use my ticket to get to Jersey on the 7th!

ROUND UP ACROSS THE PATCH The weekend in brief and we’ll start in the In the National League where Eastleigh earned a point with a goalless draw at Wrexham and are currently sitting in 16th place in the table. There were no Dorset Premier games affecting the top five, but Bournemouth Sports scored five without reply at Corfe to go fifth and Wareham Rangers close the gap at the foot of the table courtesy of a 3-1 win at Portland. There was a full programme in the Hampshire Premier, the first for a long time. Infinity stay ten points clear following a 3-0 win at Lyndhurst, second placed Paulsgrove also won on the road, 4-1 at Colden Common- but it was Bush Hill who had the biggest win with a 6-0 win over Chamberlayne with the game being switched to their Millbrook home. Fleetlands however found Overton a tough nut to crack where four goals and the points were shared. The top two in Wiltshire clashed and it ended honours even at two each and there was a similar result at Purton where Wroughton were the visitors. Southern League Premier Division South where former members Blackfield & Langley and Poole Town share two goals and the points at Gang Warily, whilst Gosport Borough earned a single goal victory at Beaconsfield Town and Salisbury won a best of three home game over Merthyr Town. In the west of Dorset, Wimborne Town went down to a 1-0 defeat at struggling Dorchester Town. In Division One South Sholing travelled to North Devon and earned a point in a goalless draw at Barnstaple Town. AFC Totton had a 4-2 reverse at Cinderford Town. A better day though for our other former members. Thatcham Town go top after a 4-0 win at Mangotsfield Town and Moneyfields ground out a 1-0 home win over Highworth Town. Finally in this section, Winchester City won by the odd goal in three at Slimbridge, and the table below shows who is currently in the shake up for end of season joy or gloom. The asterisk indicates former Wessex member clubs.

WEEK THIRTY-TWO ROUND UP

hursday’s downpour happily did not cause as much damage as feared with only three games postponed across the two Divisions, though two of those added to the number of home games still outstanding for Baffins Milton Rovers and Totton & Eling.

So just nine games played in the Premier Division – Baffins v Hamworthy was postponed – and no fewer than forty two goals scored. Leaders Alresford weighed in with four against Bournemouth – two for Mike Gosney – and AFC Portchester scored six against bottom Club Amesbury with two goals apiece for Alex Baldacchino and Dan Wooden; Zak Pickett with one of the replies from Amesbury- and we hear that this was the defender’s last appearance for the Wiltshire side as he moves back south to link up again with Lymington Town. Second placed AFC Stoneham went down 2-0 at Lymington, only their third loss on the road, with Sam House and Alex Sawyer on the mark for the home side. Christchurch also scored six, as Solent University’s search for a home win continued, with Max Wilcock claiming a hat trick, Ash Pope two and Kyle Graham one and there were two scores of five to add to the overall tally, Portland and Fareham both going nap on the day. Portland inflicted Brockenhurst’s fourth defeat in their last five matches helped by a hat trick from Ryan McKechnie – that should get him a mention in next week’s Matchday Programme – and Gary Austin scored twice as Fareham extended Shaftesbury’s long run without an away win. This followed the Creeksiders’ win over Us Portsmouth on Thursday that took them in to the last four of the Portsmouth Senior Cup. Back to Saturday and the Premier Division and the meeting between Bashley and Horndean was every bit as close as expected with goals from Alfie Lis and Bobby Scott giving the visitors the points. Hamble Club’s poor away record let them down again as they lost by the odd goal in five at Fleet Town and at the same end of the county Tadley made it four wins in a row scoring twice against Cowes Sports without any reply from the Yachtsmen. At the end of all that Alresford lead by two points and Horndean have climbed in to the top six. Goals were in shorter supply in Division One and none of those at the top of the table found points easy to come by on the day, Whitchurch staged a “Community Day” and were rewarded with a three figure attendance but could not prevent US Portsmouth returning South with the points after a best of three goal victory. Luke Hooper followed his midweek hat trick with the only goal of the game for New Street at home to New Milton – a good showing by the visitors – and draw specialists Ringwood shared the points at Downton after Ryan Hamm’s goal had been cancelled out by the home side’s Dan Savage. Verwood Town continued their fine current form with a one all draw at Bemerton – George Plank and Lee Vint the marksmen – and with the Hythe & Dibden clash with East Cowes Vics postponed, Newport edged closer to the top six with a 3-0 win over Alton with two goals from Jordan Browne. There was a similar scoreline at Romsey where Andover Town came out on top following a long series of defeats at the Bypass Ground with the brothers Pattison both on the score sheet. Laverstock & Ford proved too strong for Fawley, winning 3-0 on the Waterside –Tommy Campbell-Smith, Russell Jones and Chae Sykes the scorers – leaving the home side slipping dangerously close to relegation waters. US Portsmouth still lead the table by eight points but most of the Clubs in pursuit have games in hand and promotion is still on the cards for perhaps as many as seven Clubs. If one can interject a personal note- I went to Jersey yesterday to see Jersey Bulls win Division One of the Combined Counties League with eleven matches still to play. They have won every game and have a goal difference of +92. The opposition flew over from Heathrow and the plane was delayed because of a broken seatbelt! and they arrived at the ground at 2.20. Both sides wanted to start at 3.15 but the referee (no further comment) insisted on 3.45 which became 3.52 so I was forced to miss the second half in order to get home. And the name of the opposition on the day? British Airways. You could not make it up !
