Instructor Comments

Ken Schmidt This year’s program was another step in the evolution of the Sydney Study Abroad Program. Our courses at

the University of Sydney Centre for English teaching (USYD CET) were again very positive for our students,

but a number of students felt that they were placed at levels beyond their comptence. CET was very

cooperative in reassigning students, but we may want to ask CET to err on the side of caution in future placements.

We continued our association with the USYD Wasabi Japanese Cultural

Exchange Society, the Japanese Australian Student Society at the University of Technology, Sydney (JASS-UTS), and Sally Mizoshiri’s

students at North Sydney Girls’ High School. Our students’ preparation of

a Japanese Culture Quiz and interview questions were again helpful in

facilitating interaction and discussion. All three groups were very kind in organizing events, which provided good experiences and led to a number

of fruitful relationships for students. We were not able to join Dr. Matt

Stavros’ Japanese classes at USYD this year, but he anticiptes our joining again next year.

This year we re-introduced a “Professional Project” component into the program, but with a strong emphasis

on site visits and personal meetings with students and professionals in our students’ chosen fields. These

included visits to businesses, libraries, government agencies, clinics, nursury schools, etc. The goal, largely met, was that each student have at least two such experiences. Our hosts were very kind. Althogh

communication was, at times, an issue, students prepared well for these meetings and their reports and

feedback showed the value of these opportunities. However, the time and difficulty involved in arranging

and facilitiating these contacts, as well as the hesitancy to ask the same individuals to help again in consecutive years, have us looking for alternate models. We have already scheduled a group meeting with

the staff at the USYD Career Centre for next year, and may also encourage students to develop their own

contacts with students with similar interests. More discussion will be needed as we look toward next year.

Other very positive aspects of the program were the homestays organized by Jane Holland and her staff at

Meridian Homestay, and our TFU group-oriented activities, including a surfing lesson in Manly, Bronte

Beach barbecue, and visits to Taronga Zoo and the Blue Mountains.

All-in-all the program provided a wide range of positive educational and social experiences which were

reflected in students’ post-trip feedback and reports. Another good year for the Sydney Program.

私自身、初めての海外研修引率となった今回のシドニー研修は、参加学生にとってはもちろん、私自身に

とっても多くの学びの機会、そして自分自身、および自国について振り返る良い機会となったように感じら

れる。

そのほとんどがホームステイを含む海外長期滞在初体験であり、中には日本国外に出ることが初めてという

者もいる中で、参加学生たちは若者らしい柔軟さをもって現地の文化を感じ、また研修先である CETの英

語クラスで知り合った各国出身の友人、文化交流で出会った現地の同世代の若本たちやホストファミリーと

の交流を楽しんでいるように感じられた。英語に苦戦する者も多かったが、その経験が今後の語学学習や

さらなる国際経験に対する強い動機づけとなってくれることを願うばかりである。

引率者、そして現地での活動を立案した者の一人として、今回の研修において反省すべきは、学生の学

びの経験を増やしたいと考えるあまり、やや詰め込み過ぎなプログラムになってしまった点であった。学生

たちは限られた自由時間の中で目一杯現地を楽しみ、自ら学びの機会を開拓していた様子ではあったが、

もう少し学生たちの自主性に任せる部分があって良かったのではと思う。この反省は今後のプログラム作成

に活かしていきたい。

最後に、今回の研修にあたり、現地にて様々な形で協力・助力いただいた方々、研修の実施にご尽力いた

だいた本学関係者、並びに参加学生全員に、心より感謝の意を表したい。

Food in Sydney Saki & Tsumiki

Pie Face Meat pie is a famous dish in Australia.

There are many pie stores there. Pie Face

is a famous pie shop. We can see many

kinds of facial expression on their pies.

They are different depending on the taste

of pie. For example, a smiling one is

chicken & mushroom; an angry one is

chunky steak.

Tim-tam

Gelato

お店の中もにこにこ顔が

あふれています！

This sweet combines chocolate and

biscuit.

Although we can buy them in Japan,

in Australia, there are a lot of flavors.

They are loved by Australian people,

so, you’ll be able to see them in your

host’s house.

Because they are so cheap and

delicious, I recommend you to buy

some for your family and friends.

In Sydney, we can see a lot of gelato stores.

There are many kinds of flavor, so, we can

have fun eating them.

I ate at several gelato shops, but my favorite

was N2. It’s a little expensive, but so tasty.

Fish and Chips Fish and Chips is a famous food in Sydney. We ate at a

deep fried food shop near Circular Key Station. It was

big, so when you have fish and chips, you should share

with your friend.

Steak

If I say Australian famous food, Aussie beef! The

Australian steak is more voluminous than Japan. In

addition, you can choose chips or mash than the

potato under the steak, and both are very good!

Bills There is also a Bills in Japan, but Australian Bills

was the best! We ate Ricotta Hotcakes. It was

really delicious!! It’s better to share with everyone

and enjoy the various tastes.

ありますよ！！

Sightseeing in Sydney

Rika & Kana

Taronga Zoo I will introduce “Taronga zoo”!! It is a famous tourist destination in

Sydney!! Taronga Zoo is just 12 minutes from the city center by ferry,

with breathtaking views of Sydney Harbor and free shows!! If you go

to this place, you are able to see Australia's rare animals, for example,

koalas, kangaroos, wombats and Tasmanian devils!!

In particular, I recommend the “Koala Encounter.” You have to pay

an additional fee but you are able to take photos right next to them!!

私は時間にギリギリ間に合わず体験できなかったので、もし行きたい

人がいたら時間に気を付けて下さい！他にもアザラシのショーやフリ

ーフライトバードショーなんかもやっていました！私はバードショーを

見なかったのですが見に行った人曰く、鳥が上手く

飛ばないため内容が変更になって、コンドルが子豚

を食べる所をみせてくれたそうです。内臓とか凄かっ

たそうな笑。あまり時間が無い！という人や日本で見

られる動物は別に見なくて良い！という人はオースト

ラリア特有の動物が一括りにされているエリアに行け

ばばっちりです！

The Blue Mountains

Next I will introduce “Blue Mountains!! When

we went got to this place, it was raining… So it

was more thrilling!! The mountains are wide, high

and pleasant.

ただ、下る時に使った階段の危険度が凄い！！

左の写真では分かり辛いかもしれませんがきつか

ったです。スリル好きの人にはもってこいだと思い

ます。途中で花や鳥なども観察しながら散策でき

るので、是非キバタンという鳥を探してみて下さい。

服装は寒がりな人は厚着することをお勧めしま

す！最後は少し疲れましたが、結構いい運動に

もなったし楽しかったです！

Sydney’s Beaches

We will now introduce the famous beaches of Sydney! We visited Sydney in winter, but there were

days it was warm enough to go into the sea. We also recommend walking along the beach to enjoy

the views.

Manly Beach Circular Quay からManly までフェリーで

Harbour Bridge と Opera Houseの両方（おス

スメ写真スポット）を見ながら、２０分ほど・・・マ

ンリーに到着！海岸通りには、カフェやレスト

ランなどが並んでおり、テイクアウトも可能なの

で、ビーチで海を見ながら食べることもできま

す。マリーン・パレード遊歩道もあり、ゆったり

とビーチと海を眺めながら散歩も出来る気持

ちの良いビーチです。

Manly Beachでは土曜日にマーケットではデザイナーズのアクセサリーや、現地食のお店がたく

さん開かれており、現地の生活感を楽しむことができます。また、シドニーの中心部よりも、お土産

が安く買うことができるのも Manly Beachの魅力です。

Bondi Beach～Bronte Beach

Bondi Beach（左写真）は Circular Quayから

約４０分で行くことができます。Bondi Beachで

はたくさんのお店があり、ショッピングを楽しむ

ことができます。ここから、Tamarama Beachを

経由し、Bronte Beachまで約３０分ほど遊歩

道を歩き、景色を楽しむことができます。サー

ファーやウォーキング、ジョギングを楽しむ現

地の方々がいます。途中、このようなところに

上ることができ、写真を撮ることができますが

柵がないところもあるので注意してください。

Surprises in Sydney!

Wakana & Misaki

Prices are high!

The prices in Australia are very high. For example, a

bottle of water is $3; coffee and muffin sets are

$10…

I wanted to buy lunch and sweets. However, they are

too expensive and I could not do it. So I made

sandwiches every day for lunch. There is a DAISO

in Sydney. Everything is $2.80, not $1.

Sydney’s trains

Sydney trains are mostly double decker! Seats

are also different from those in Japanese trains.

For example, there is a grip bar across the top

edge of the seatback and passengers hold it as

they stand in the train, like Japanese do with

straps hanging down from above. Also the seats

are reversible. You can swing over the seatback

to change the way the seats face. It’s similar to

the way you rotate the seats on the Shinkansen to face your friends. It is possible to sit down face to

face with your friends in Sydney as well.

回カードを使えば、その週の日曜日まで何度利

用してもタダで乗ることができる。また、一日の

運賃支払い上限が月〜土曜は$15、日曜は

$2.50！さらに、それ以降は無料で乗り放題で

ある。Opal Cardは電車だけでなく、バスやフェ

リー、路面電車でも使用可能！とても便利なカ

ードである。

Shops close early!

Sydney’s shops close early, at 6:00pm, so I couldn’t visit many recommened shops. But Thursday

is the late shopping day, and shops are open at night, till 9:00pm. Therefore, people in Sydney often

go shopping on that day. For example, my host family drove to IKEA for shopping on Thursday

evening.

Barbecue on the beach? There are many beaches in Sydney. I went to the beach with classmates several times. Most beaches

have some big, gas cookers in the park near the beach, like in this picture:

This is a typical cooker. You don’t need to make a reservation, and they are easy to light. There

should be such a system in Japan!

Homestay in Sydney

Yudai & Taichi

長期留学すると問題になるのは、住む場所だと思います。現地で、寮やアパート借家を借りて滞

在するのもあると思いますが、多くの人が最初はホームステイを経験すると思います。そこで、私た

ちが経験したホームステイをまとめて書きます。

私たちは、シドニーで３週間ホームステイをしました。オーストラリアは多民族国家であり、また、

多様な宗教を信仰する人々がいます。どのような信仰を持っているかによって、食べることができ

ない物があったり、食事の前には「いただきます」ではなく神様にお祈りをしたりと、様々です。また、

オーストラリアは水がとても貴重です。毎日のようにホームステイファミリーからは「Water is

precious」と言われていました。そのため、洗濯は週に１回や 2回など限られていました。お風呂は

５分から１０分の家庭もあり、時間が決まっていない家もありました。

料理はスペイン？アルゼンチン？のスパイ

ス効いてる系の料理でシャワーは 5 から 10

分だった！（まい、ひとみ宅）

シャワーは五分。お父さんがインド系だっ

たからインド料理多かったよ！パスタとか

グラタン、中華の日もあった！宗教上豚

肉は食べることができない、と言っていま

した！ホストファミリーはほんと神！とても

優しかったし、英語も正しい使い方とか

教えてくれるし、今日はどうだった？とか

毎日聞いてくれて、とっても温かかったよ

ー♩家の雰囲気も家族もみんな優しかっ

私達が滞在した家は、最大６人までホームステイメイトを宿泊させることができて、私達が滞在して

いた時には、私達以外に中国人の高校生が３人、ワーキングホリデーで滞在中の日本人が１人い

ました。ホームステイファミリーは、おじいさん、おばあさんでオーストラリア育ちの方々でした。私

たちが家を出た４週間後には家を売ることを決めていました。

彼らは 1999年から今まで約 16年間ホームステイを受け入れてきたそうです。そこでとある日の

会話を記事にしてみました。

Interview with host family

Me: Why did you become a homestay family?

Host family: I like people and different cultures.

Me: How many people have stayed in this house?

Host family: Over 100 people from 22 countries: Brazil, America, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Syria,

etc….

Me: Until now, have there been any problems with home stay?

Host family: No, everyone is polite. But one student was very impolite.

Me: Will you continue doing home stay?

Host family: Yes, We will. But we are going to sell this house. So it depends on the size of the next

house.

服！！たいていのものは現地で手に入りますよ！！

Opal Card(オーパルカード)

シドニー広域園のフェリー、電車、バスで利用でき

るチャージ式 ICカードです。とても便利でお得な

カードです！！

This is a rechargeable IC card. We can use it for the

ferry, train and bus. This card is very convenient.

購入後はネットでカード番号の登録を！！

オーパルカードは現地のコンビニ等、「Top up」の

看板がある所で購入及びチャージができます。購

入後はオーパルカード公式 HP にてカード番号の登録を必ず行いましょう。登録することによって、

万が一、紛失・盗難しても残額が保証されます！登録をしないと残額の保証はされません。

After purchasing your Opal card, be sure to register the card number on the Opal Card official HP.

By registering the balance on your card is insured even if you your card isi lost or stolen! If you do

not register, your balance is not guaranteed.

Bus シドニーのバスは日本と大きく違います。

Buses in Sydney are very different from the

buses in Japan.

⭐︎手を挙げないと止まらない！

自分の乗りたいバスが来たら、手を上に挙げ

てバスを止めます。手を挙げて運転手さんに

知らせないと、バスは通りすぎてしまいます。

When waiting at the bus stop, you can stop the

bus by raising your hand. If you don’t raise

your hand, the bus will not stop at your stop.

︎停留所のアナウンスが無い！

停留所のアナウンスが無いので、自分の降りたい停留所が何個目であるかを確認しながら降車

します。Googleマップ等で確認すながら乗ると間違いにくいです。

There is no announcement for each stop!

Please be careful about where you are while on the bus. Otherwise you will miss your bus stop. I

recommend that you use Google Maps to check your location.

Shopping in Sydney Hanae, Hitomi & Mai

QVB（Queen Victoria Building） QVB is an old, traditional building. It is

so huge. There are many cafes and shops

inside. It is nice, but it’s so expensive.

We cannot really buy a lot of things. But

it is fun to just look at things.

この建物は 1898年、当時の英国国王ビ

クトリア女王の即位 50年を記念して建て

られたもので、もともとはコンサートホー

ルでした。老朽化のため、一時は取り壊

そうという声もあったそうですが、1984年

ショッピングセンターとしてリニューアルし

ました。

I recommend a chocolate shop in QVB. The

shop’s name is HAIGH’S. It is expensive but

it is famous for delicious sweets. It might be

good to buy them for people who are older

than you. For example, your seminar’s

teacher. They also sell liqueur chocolates.

Be careful!

China Town The goods sold in China Town are cheap. You can find a lot of Australian souvenirs. Prices are

different depending on the shop, so I think you should compare prices if you have a lot of time. And

you can eat Chinese food.

✩Greetings in Shops✩ When you enter a shop, the clerk will say to you ‘Hello. How are you?’ You should say ‘Good,

thanks.’

日本でも、お店に入ると、店員さんが「いらっしゃいませ」と声をかけてくれますよね。でも、日本人

は基本的には返答しません。しかし、外国でも同様に無視してしまうと、少し気まずくなってしまい

ます。最初は抵抗がありますが、これも勉強です。勇気を出して言ってみましょう！Let’s try!!

Markets of Sydney

Rocks Market

This market is opened on every Saturday and

Sunday. You can do shopping and sightseeing

ther. It’s near Circular Quay Station.

私がここを訪れたときにはスプレーアートをして

いる男性がいました。そのスプレーアートはとて

も上手で、 立ち止まって作品ができる過程を見

ている人が たくさんいました。ロックスマーケット

ではレモネードのお店が 有名で列ができてい

ました。私も飲みましたが美味しかったです。

可愛い雑貨やオシャレなものがたくさんあるた

め女子にオススメです。

Paddy’s Market

There are various kinds of things available at

Paddy’s, for example, clothes, souvenirs, electrics,

fruits and vegetables. If you want to buy many

souvenirs, you should go to this market!

Manly Market

Manly Market is held on the mall in front of

Manley Beach every Saturday and Sunday. It

is calm and quiet on weekdays but it is very

busy and exciting on weekends.

海に似合うものがたくさん売っています。アク

セサリーやビーチ用品がメインですが 野菜な

ども売っています。お菓子も可愛いものがたく

さんあります。しかし、マーケットより商店街の

方が可愛いものもたくさんあり、安いかもしれ

ません。

ここはアジア風のマーケットです。オーストラリア

感はあまりないです。常に商品が安いですが、

月・火曜日が定休日で日曜日になると通常より

お得になります。通常であれば 3個で 1 ドルの

ものが 5個で 1 ドルになったりします。そのため

買い物するのは日曜日がオススメです。コアラ

やカンガルーやアボリジニを チーフにした商品

が多いため、オーストラリア感のあるお土産はこ

こで買うと良いと思います。

Shopping in Manly

You can get to Manly by ferry

from Circular Quay. It takes

about 30min. There are a lot of

attractive shops in Manly! We

went there to take a surfing

lesson. We also enjoyed

shopping and spent a lot of

money on clothing, food,

coffee, souvenirs and so on.

I think you’ll like Manly!

Manly! It was delicious but a little

too big for me.

cap in Manly.
