WHAT’S HAPPENING OUT THERE? Rebounding economy puts squeeze on transportation providers Syfan Says SUMMER | 2014 For anyone in the transportation industry – and Syfan Logistics is certainly no exception – the question on everyone’s mind so far this year is, “What’s happening?” I have been involved in this business for more than half my life. I have seen plenty of economic cycles, both good and bad. But I honestly have never seen the scales so heavily tilted with a capacity shortage that is far exceeded by the number of shipments available. In short, we are seeing demand not only outstrip supply – it is blowing away the doors, the floors, the roof and everything down to the kitchen sink. Be careful what you wish for All of this swing in capacity shortage comes on the heels of the worst recession in modern memory. Maybe that’s why the shift is so shocking to our collective system. For too long, we have been hunkering down under the double whammy of a slow economy and increased government regulations on our drivers. For many independents and small fleets, the pressure was too much, causing them to exit the business. By the time manufacturing began heating up again last year, the carrier pool was reduced by nearly a third. This good news-bad news scenario has created big challenges for shippers and logistics providers like our company. In addition, this winter’s snow storms throughout the United States further disrupted shipping lanes. Rising up to the challenge So what are we to do? At Syfan Logistics, we are facing up to these challenges one day at a time. We are: • Strengthening our carrier team and adding new partners. • Adding trucks to our own fleet. • Continuing to enhance our technology to better match loads while keeping our customers informed every step of the way, 24-7. • Hiring more carrier sales and support personnel, primarily in our Syfan Expedited division. In the short term, we anticipate many more challenges with rising rates and demanding delivery schedules. Therefore, we are up to the task, we are poised for growth, and we thank our shippers and carriers for our growth relationship! • WHATS HAPPENING OUT THERE? Rebounding economy puts squeeze on transportation providers

SyfanSays SUMMER | 2014For anyone in the transportation industry and Syfan Logistics is certainly no exception the question on everyones mind so far this year is,

    Whats happening?

I have been involved in this business for more than half my life. I have seen plenty of economic cycles, both good and bad. But I honestly have never seen the scales so heavily tilted with a capacity shortage that is far exceeded by the number of shipments available. In short, we are seeing demand not only outstrip supply it is blowing away the doors, the floors, the roof and everything down to the kitchen sink.

Be careful what you wish for All of this swing in capacity shortage comes on the heels of the worst recession in modern memory. Maybe thats why the shift is so shocking to our collective system. For too long, we have been hunkering down under the double whammy of a slow economy and increased government regulations on our drivers. For many independents and

small fleets, the pressure was too much, causing them to exit the business.

By the time manufacturing began heating up again last year, the carrier pool was reduced by nearly a third. This good news-bad news scenario has created big challenges for shippers and logistics providers like our company. In addition, this winters snow storms throughout the United States further disrupted shipping lanes.

Rising up to the challenge So what are we to do? At Syfan Logistics, we are facing up to these challenges one day at a time.

    We are:

Strengthening our carrier team and adding new partners.

Adding trucks to our own fleet.

Continuing to enhance our technology to better match loads while keeping our customers informed every step of the way, 24-7.

Hiring more carrier sales and support personnel, primarily in our Syfan Expedited division.

In the short term, we anticipate many

more challenges with rising rates and demanding delivery schedules. Therefore, we are up to the task, we are poised for growth, and we thank our shippers and carriers for our growth relationship!

Finally, no matter how impossible the odds, Syfan Logistics will continue to stick with our Never Say No policy. Even when one road is blocked, well look for another way around whatever problem comes our way.

You can be sure of that.

  • Turbo Truck Center, a sister company to Syfan Logistics that provides truck repair and maintenance, is expanding its services in the refurbishment of warehouse terminal tractors.

Terminal tractors with nicknames like Yard Dog and Mules are the workhorses at distribution centers, ports and rail yards across the United States and abroad. Replacing these vehicles, which undergo tremendous wear and tear, with a brand new model is very expensive. A new terminal tractor can cost upwards of $110,000.

Thats why Turbo Truck Centers refurbishment program for Yard Dogs has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past several years by upgrading old and tired vehicles for as low as a third of the cost of a new one.

Furthermore, the refurb work is handled by Turbo Truck Centers team of ASE-certified technicians and even comes with a warranty similar to a new vehicle. A complete re-manufacturing job comes with a two-year warranty.

Customers also like the fact that Turbo Truck Center utilizes its sister relationship with Syfan Logistics to pick up and return the Yard Dog refurbs as an additional service. Also, Turbo Truck Center has rental terminal tractors to use while it refurbishes or re-manufactures your old one, and can deliver it to you when it picks up your worn-out or tired yard dog.

Case Study: FITCO Uses Syfans Freight Management System to Track Inbound Freight

Syfan Logistics has a tradition of being out in front of the next trend in transportation especially if it improves service to our customers. Theres no better example than our recent introduction of FMS or Freight Management Services which brings huge advantages to both our shipper customers and carrier team.

A case in point is our partnership with FITCO, a food ingredient manufacturer located in Anniston, Ala. FITCO has been in business for more than 20 years. The USDA-inspected facility produces chicken broth and chicken fat and employs approximately 110 associates.

With its Freight Management System, Syfan Logistics can help customers trim upwards of 10 percent off their freight costs. Most companies with average annual freight costs exceeding $3.5 million can benefit from Syfans FMS program.

Syfans FMS program achieves efficiency with a number of automated system strategies including bid procurement, mode optimization and load execution.

The bid procurement allows Syfan to align a companys shipping needs with the lane preferences and capacities of their carriers. The result is better rates for the shipper and more efficient use of existing lanes for the carrier.

Syfans mode optimization tool examines a shippers entire inventory of freight and delivery needs, then automatically consolidates or matches each shipment with the most efficient delivery methods.

The load execution finalizes the whole delivery process by automating the tendering of loads and much of the operational work.

The FMS keeps track of all shipments through a portal on the Syfan Logistics website. Customers can get updates at any time along with real-time GPS of load locations.

  • Scott Sapp was the first employee ever hired by the Syfan family at Turbo Logistics and now he is back with the Syfans at Syfan Logistics.

Sapp will work in Carrier Sales covering the Midwest region. He began his career in 1984 at Turbo Logistics in Carrier Sales and over the years has developed a wide network of contacts in the industry.

Scott knows the business and is a great resource for our customers, Syfan Logistics President Greg Syfan said. We are excited to have him back with us.

In addition to his work in the logistics business, Sapp is known for one other thing his barbecue map. Over the years, he has mapped out the best barbecue places to eat and has them marked on a map. With over 100 on the map, he has eaten at all of them.

Syfan Logistics employees are quick to help a team member. The day before last Thanksgiving, Chuck Parris, brother-in-law of Syfan team member Tim Dawson, suffered multiple strokes on each side of his brain, spending numerous months in ICU and rehabilitation. Through raffles and donations, the Syfan team raised more than $3,200 to help the Parris Family.

Tim relayed a message to Syfan employees from Chuck, his wife, Jessica, and son, Jace, expressing the familys appreciation. Truly, I could say thank you a million times over and it would not come close to showing how appreciative we are. You will always hold a special place in our hearts for your kindness towards our family and you are a true blessing to us. Love, the Parris Family.

Nine Syfan Logistics employees took part in the 2014 Challenged Child & Friends 5k and 1-Mile Fun Run. The event was a fundraiser for the Gainesville non-profit.

Challenged Child & Friends serves children with disabilities through state-of-the-art educational, therapeutic, nursing and family counseling services in an integrated environment.

TTC Uses Chili Cook-Off to Introduce Continental Tires

    Syfan Supports Challenged Child

Turbo Truck Center (TTC), a sister company to Syfan Logistics, held its first Chili

Cook-Off and used the event to introduce Continental Commercial Truck Tires

to our customer base by way of their Innovation Tour truck. The education our

customers received with the new technology was priceless.

Continental Tire has become one of our leading brands that we offer to our

fleet customers. Turbo is closing in on its first full year as a Continental direct

    dealer. With the addition of

    Continental and our long-time

    relationship with Michelin,

    TTC now represents two of

the top three national brands of

    commercial truck tires.

TTCs Robbin Dorminey, second from left, won first place in the chili cook-off. Matt McCollum, Dean Foods, left, Tony Norton, Ace Hardware, and Mike Warren, Continental Tire served as judges.
