To begin, students choose a word Card and determine how many syllables the word has. Then players move their Game Marker that same number of spaces on the Board. The Board is a 40-space journey along a winding path from Start (Earth) to Finish (Spaceship), and the first player to reach the Spaceship wins. On the Game Board, special spaces command players to go back or forward one or two spaces. The game is suitable for one to four players. On the opposite side of the Game Board is a sorting game. Students choose a word Card and place it under the alien with one, two, or three eyes, according to the number of syllables in the word. Model the Activity Begin by modeling the activity, discussing every step with students. Set up the Spaceship Game Board with the stack of word Cards face up next to it, and one Game Marker at Start. Show students Start (Earth) and Finish (Spaceship), and explain that the object is to get to the Spaceship. Pick a word Card (careful not to show the answer on the back), and read the word aloud, pronouncing each syllable clearly. Let students help you count the syllables; you may encourage students to clap or snap the syllables for emphasis. Example: “Ro-bot, that’s 2 syllables.” Then move your Game Marker two spaces on the Game Board. Pick a one-syllable word and a two-syllable word for your next turns so that you land on Space 5 on your third turn. Read the instruction “Forgot my lunch, go back 2,” and move your Game Marker back two spaces. Explain to students that when their Marker lands on a space that has an instruction, they must do whatever the instruction commands. Tell students they will play with up to four players, they will take turns, and the first player to reach Finish wins the game. To demonstrate the sorting game on the opposite side of the Game Board, turn the Board over. Show students that the aliens have the same number of eyes as the number on their shirts, and they can only want words with that number of syllables in their category. Pick up a word Card, read the word aloud pronouncing the syllables distinctly, and say how many syllables it has. Then sort the Card below the proper alien.
