Spring 2011
Course Syllabus An introductory course on the basic fundamentals of physics. This is a calculus based
course which will include some basic integration, differentiation, and discussion of the
use of differential equations. Students will learn about the following topics: space and
time, kinematics, forces, energy and momentum, conservation laws, rotational motion,
torques, simple harmonic motion, waves, and basic thermodynamic laws.

Course Pre-requisites
1st semester Calculus
Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes
Upon completing this course, students will:
1. Be able to analyze and explain the components of linear and rotational motion(displacement, velocity, acceleration) including graphs and their interrelationships
2. Be able to apply different forces and work force problems including the
fundamental force of gravity and Newton’s laws
3. Be able to classify the different forms of energy and use the conservation of energy
to work problems
4. Be able to define impulse, momentum and collisions
5. Identify and describe fluids in motion and at rest.
6. Explain simple harmonic motion and waves including their properties.
Required Textbooks and Materials
University Physics, 12th edition, by Young & Freedman. Everyone needs a
masteringphysics account (see page 3) and should have a clicker for interactive class
sessions, they can be purchased from the technology store (CPS pulse gen 3 clicker
Einstruction).

All reading assignments specified in the schedule above should becompleted before attending class. During class there will be interactive
quizzes on the reading material.
Grading Policy There will be no curving.
90-100 A (A+, A, A-)

Homework assignments are given on the website http://www.masteringphysics.com.
Go to the website and login as a student following the directions.
The course ID for this class is Lary2325Fall2011 and for your student ID use the first
3 letters of your first name + the first 3 letters of your last name. Make sure the name
you give the website matches your name of record. If for any reason you need
technical help with MasteringPhysics call 1.877.672.6877 and explain the problem to
tech support.
Homework and Exams will be computer graded. No handwritten homework will be
accepted. Credit will be reduced by 1% for every hour that the homework is late up to a
maximum of 50%.
Classroom Citizenship
Cell phones must be turned off during all class time. No eating or drinking in class.
Please do not disrupt the class by getting up and leaving the class.
