Detailed Description of Major Assignments

Assignment Title or Grade Requirement

Description

1) Five-Page Research Paper You will be required to complete a research paper worth 100 points. The research paper is work 25% of your course grade. You will pick a topic from the list at the end of this syllabus. You need to pick your topic as soon as possible. Every student in this course will have their own topic. Put differently, one topic per student or no topic will be shared between two or more students. Students' topic must be approved by the instructor by the third week of class or September 12, 2017. The student will utilize American Psychological Association (APA) style and will include a cover sheet and reference page, citing at least 10 outside sources. The cover sheet and reference page does not count toward the five page requirement. The final draft of the paper is due on the end of the twelfth week of class or November 16, 2017. If your paper topic is different from the topic you selected on September 12, 2017, your grade will be a zero. After September 12, 2017, you will not be able to change your topic. Therefore, you need to start searching for a topic beginning September 5, 2017. You should be able to find a topic in three weeks. A copy of the Research Paper Rubric will be used to evaluate the research paper is provided in this syllabus. Students are encouraged to go to the Writing Center for assistance on your writing assignments.

2) Timed Unannounced Quizzes There will be 10 Timed Unannounced Quizzes worth 10 points each or 100 Points. These Timed Unannounced Quizzes are worth 25% of your course grade. Timed Unannounced Quizzes will consist of either true/false, multiple choice, fill in the blank questions, or questions. Answers to the Timed Unannounced Quizzes will be marked on a Scantron Form 886-e or written on notebook paper for questions. Timed Unannounced Quizzes will cover topics in assigned reading assignments and lectures. You need to be prepared for the Timed Unannounced Quizzes by bringing a Scantron Form 886-e and notebook paper to class every day.

You need to be prepared for the Final Exam by bringing a Scantron Form 886-e and notebook paper to class on _____________.

Course Procedures or Additional Instructor Policies Make-Up Assignments (Assignment is defined as Timed Unannounced Quizzes, Research Paper, Mid-Semester Exam, and Final Exam)

Excused Absences: o Students are allowed to make up assignments if they have the appropriate

documentation for their absence from the Office of Student Affairs. There are only four acceptable excuses for a student to make-up missed assignments: (1) Medical/Disability, (2) Funeral Attendance, (3) Mandatory Courtroom Appearance, and (4) PVAMU event/participation.

Upon receiving of your documentation from the Office of Student Affairs, I will make an appointment with any of the Faculty/Staff at the Office of Student Affairs to verify the authenticity of your excuse. Note: everybody on campus knows that student can obtain and fill out the form for an excused absence without actually going to Student Affairs and then present the form to their professor as official documentation. In addition, everybody on campus knows that a student can easily present the Office of Student Affairs with a fake doctor’s note and they will write you an official excuse for your absence.

If I determine that your documentation is fake or falsified, you will receive a grade of zero that assignment.

o Students are required to provide Dr. Rembert with their official excuse of absence from the Office Student Affairs on the first day they return to class.

o Make-Up assignments will be administered the last week of class and will be different from the assignment(s) missed.

Unexcused Absences: o If your excuse for being absence, does not fit into these four categories, (1)

Medical/Disability, (2) Funeral Attendance, (3) Mandatory Courtroom Appearance, and (4) PVAMU event/participation, you will receive a grade of zero on that assignment.

o Students submitting assignments after the due date without the appropriate documentation from the Office of Student Affairs will receive a grade of zero on that assignment.

o If another student submits your assignment on or after the due date, and without the appropriate documentation from the Office of Student Affairs, you will receive a grade of zero on that assignment. Note: I have known students to cheat using this technique.

Department Policy on Mobile Devices and Technology:

It is imperative that instructors be afforded reasonable authority to manage the classroom learning environment. An important component of management of the classroom environment is control of topic and pedagogical method. Empirical data shows that student use of mobile devices and other forms of technology that are not approved by the instructor for the educational endeavor of interest serve as distractors to student attention. When students attempt to divide their time between paying attention to the classroom topic and/or pedagogical method used by the instructor and the use of a mobile device, the student may miss important course content or details. Unsanctioned use of mobile devices or technology by a student may also serve as a substantial distraction to other students enrolled in the course. It is the policy of the Department of Justice Studies that during examinations no mobile device or other form of technology be placed in the student's work area, visible by the student, or within an arm’s length reach of the student. The instructor of record may and is encouraged to further elaborate his or her own course-specific mobile device policies in writing in the course syllabus as an amendment. Electronic Devices: Students will not be allowed to use electronic devices during quizzes or exams. Violations of this policy will result in the student being dismissed from class, receiving a zero on the quiz or exam. NOTE: Syllabi subject to change with advance notice. Tardiness and Absenteeism are NOT encouraged: a considerable amount of information will be covered each week. Of course, classes will begin on time. If for some reason you will be absent for more than one class during the semester, call the instructor to let him or her know. YOU are responsible for materials covered in any classes that you miss. The instructor will be available for clarification on lecture materials. Please see the latest version of the undergraduate handbook for the university attendance policy. Late assignments will result in a grade of zero. Expect no extra credit assignments.

Incompletes are rarely given. Please see the university handbook for the university policy on the assignment of “incomplete” grades. NOTE: Students who have a failing average in a course cannot receive an incomplete grade. Academic Misconduct: (e.g. plagiarism, cheating or collusion) [see Student Handbook] will not be tolerated!!! Anyone caught engaging in any such activities – FAILS the course!!! Having an electronic device on during a closed book examination will result in an assumption of cheating and an “F” in the course. Criminal Justice demands persons of impeccable integrity. * If you encounter problems in meeting any of these requirements, do not hesitate to utilize my office hours. Submission of Written Assignments: Written assignments should be typed, double-spaced and in APA format per the 6th edition of the manual. Assignments are due as indicated in the Semester Calendar. Formatting Documents: Microsoft Word is the standard word processing tool used at PVAMU. If you are using other word processors, be sure to use the “save as” tool and save the document in either the Microsoft Word, Rich-Text, or plain text format.

Student Counseling Services The Student Counseling Services unit offers a range of services and programs to assist students in maximizing their potential for success: short-term individual, couples, and group counseling, as well as crisis intervention, outreach, consultation, and referral services. The staff is licensed by the State of Texas and provides assistance to students who are dealing with academic skills concerns, situational crises, adjustment problems, and emotional difficulties. Phone: 936-261-3564 Testing The Department of Testing administers College Board CLEP examinations, the HESI A2 for pre-nursing majors, LSAT for law school applicants and MPRE for second-year law students, the Experiential Learning Portfolio option, the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Assessment, which determines college readiness in the state, and exam proctoring, among other service such as SAT and ACT for high school students. Phone: 936-261-4286 Office of Diagnostic Testing and Disability Services As a federally-mandated educational support unit, the Office of Disability Services serves as the repository for confidential disability files for faculty, staff, and students. 1. Cheating: deception in which a student misrepresents that he/she has mastered information on an academic exercise that he/she has not mastered; giving or receiving aid unauthorized by the instructor on assignments or examinations.

2. Academic misconduct: tampering with grades or taking part in obtaining or distributing

any part of a scheduled test.

3. Fabrication: use of invented information or falsified research.

4. Plagiarism: unacknowledged quotation and/or paraphrase of someone else’s words, ideas, or data as one’s own in work submitted for credit. Failure to identify information or essays from the Internet and submitting them as one’s own work also constitutes plagiarism.

Nonacademic Misconduct (See Student Handbook) The university respects the rights of instructors to teach and students to learn. Maintenance of these rights requires campus conditions that do not impede their exercise. Campus behavior that interferes with either (1) the instructor’s ability to conduct the class, (2) the inability of other students to profit from the instructional program, or (3) campus behavior that interferes with the rights of others will not be tolerated. An individual engaging in such disruptive behavior may be subject to disciplinary action. Such incidents will be adjudicated by the Dean of Students under nonacademic procedures. Class Attendance Policy (See Catalog for Full Attendance Policy) Prairie View A&M University requires regular class attendance. Attending all classes supports full academic development of each learner whether classes are taught with the instructor physically present or via distance learning technologies such as interactive video and/or internet. Excessive absenteeism, whether excused or unexcused, may result in a student’s course grade being reduced or in assignment of a grade of “F”. However, conversations about the readings, lectures, materials, and other aspects of the course can take place in a seminar fashion. This will be accomplished by the use of the discussion board. It is strongly suggested that students type their discussion postings in a word processing application and save it to their PC or a removable drive before posting to the discussion board. This is important for two reasons: 1) If for some reason your discussion responses are lost in your online course, you will have another copy; 2) Grammatical errors can be greatly minimized by the use of the spell-and-grammar check functions in word processing applications. Once the post(s) have been typed and corrected in the word processing application, it/they should be copied and pasted to the discussion board.
