We design, manufacture and finish our products with attention to detail, taking into account the proportions, style and end use. This results inproducts that are not only attractive and well made, but truly fit for thepurpose in every detail.

Many improvements have been implemented since our first designs. Choiceof timber, design proportions and manufacturing processes have beenrevised to achieve greater strength, beauty and improve quality even further.

    The Environment

Timber is one of the most eco-friendly materials in existence

The use of timber is sometimes regarded as damaging the environment. However, timber is one of the few materials that can be replenished simplyby growing more. There are other factors to take into account such as thegrowing time and the management of felling and replanting but if timber ismanaged responsibly it is a very sustainable and eco-friendly material.

We do not use tropical or any southern hemisphere timbers.

All timber used in our planters are sourced from reputable suppliers in Europe and North America where regulations areeasily monitored and certification is increasing rapidly. We do not use tropical or southern hemisphere timbers such asTeak or Iroko. The phrases managed estates and sustainably sourced are well used throughout the timber industry. However, we do not believe that this should include sources that are devastating entire areas and then replanting after allthe natural plant and wildlife has been destroyed.

Our Planters can be finished in either solvent or water based paints

When deciding on the finishing process we strive to ensure that all relevant issues are considered. This may include theintended location of the planters, the required durability or environmental issues. It is our policy to make all clients awareof available finishes and discuss with them any specific requirements.

We are reducing the use of chemical preservatives.

Western red cedar (WRC) has been introduced to replace the use of the chemically preserved Tanalised Timber. WRCis naturally durable, it is dimensionally stable, almost knot free and requires no further preservative treatment. TanalisedTimber is softwood (pine) that is injected with a copper-chrome-arsenic solution under pressure.

IntroductionDesigns in Wood was a name established as a specialist designer and manufacturer of timber plant containers in the UKwith customers worldwide. Sylvan have added this his high quality range to their portfolio and now manufacture to exactly

the same specification and design, as well as offering a complete bespoke, design and manufacturing service. All products are manufactured at our workshops in Pleasley Vale, on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border.

Collaborating with architects, designers and directly with clients and specialist outlets, we have supplied parks and gardens, corporate headquarters, local authorities, private homes, country estates, hotels, restaurants, shopping centres, supermarkets, roof terraces and a royal palace.

Working with durable timbers, preservatives and quality finishes we have studied the implications of their use andimplemented our own environmental policies. These issues are an important aspect of our design and manufacturingprocesses and are explained in detail in the following section.

Size options full range of small containers for a single plant

through to large planting areas. Drainage - can be controlled through the base.

Mobility - to control the plants environment throughout the year, to

change layout and to re-locate site.

Shapes using timber we can offer squares, rectangles, curves,

    angles, sloping sides.

Frost resistant and warmer in winter than many alternatives.

Better water retention than materials such as terracotta.

Stable - particularly in strong winds.

Durable WRC and European Oak are very durable even in damp

    conditions.

Finishes - timber can be left natural, stained or painted to suit

individual tastes. Our own finishing process achieves a level ofquality to grace any location internal or external, private or public.

Sustainable - timber is a replaceable resource.

    Why Timber?

There are many reasons for utilising timber for containers rather than alternative materials. Sylvan - Designs in Woods tim-ber containers can provide a combination of all of the following advantages.

European Oak (English and French)has a combination of natural beauty, strength and durability that are unrivalled in anyother timber. Oak represents an excellent investment that will mature and mellow with age.

Western Red Cedarprovides a more economical but equally beautiful natural finish and provides a perfect base forfinishing with stains and paints. Western Red Cedar is also lighter in weight than oak and therefore better suited forapplications where weight is an important factor, such as roof gardens.

    Design and Construction

Timbers are fully seasoned (kiln dried or fully air dried) prior

to being machined on all faces.

Frames are constructed with traditional mortise and tenon

joints, which are glued and cross pinned for maximum strength.

Panelling is solid timber, tongued and grooved and fixed ingrooved rails.

All finials are turned as an integral part of the leg.

The underneath of all planters is painted with a rubberised

coating and nylon feet fitted to raise the timber off groundlevel, preventing the legs standing in damp conditions.

Planters have a slatted base with gaps between the slats to

provide drainage (unless fitted with GRP lining).

Lining options are explained in the following section.

As the overall size of the planter increases, the size of timber

sections used increases. Sylvan - Designs in Woods plantersuse five sets of timber sections across the standard range inorder to maintain both their strength and their proportions.

Sylvan - Designs in Wood planters are constructed using the durable timbers European Oak and Western Red Cedar with thefollowing features.

    Western Red Cedar Planters

Western Red Cedar (WRC) is a naturally durable timber that isdimensionally very stable and has few knots. WRCs natural oils andminerals help to prevent both decay and insect attack and it is classedas Durable by the Timber Research and Development Association(TRADA). Our WRC is sustainably sourced from the west coast ofCanada and dried in England ready for machining. It is a beautiful

timber that will weather to a silver/grey hue if left outside in itsnatural state. Unlike coarse timbers with interlocking grain such asIroko, the grain of WRC provides a perfect base to achieve anexcellent finish with a range of oils, stains and paints.

Our Versailles style Western Red Cedar planters are available in a wide range of finishes.

Natural planters have an attractive natural wood finish and will weather to a silver/grey

hue. Alternatively, they are ready for you to finish with your own stain or paint.

Stained planters are spray finished externally with a superb quality three coat system in

a range of shades. The standard range is mahogany, light oak or walnut stain.

Painted planters are spray finished externally with a

superb quality three coat system in range of colours. Ourstandard range includes white, Holly green, Oxford blueand black, which are available in acrylic eggshell oracrylic gloss finish.

Please note that our finishing process is extensive and includes filling any small blemishes, sanding surfaces and edges prior to and between coats. Finishes are applied with spray equip-ment to achieve a higher quality surface finish and greater build of finishing material per coatwhich is therefore more durable.

    Oak Planters

The prime quality Oak used is from sustainable sources in Britainand other European countries. Unlike many other durablehardwoods, these high quality grades of Oak have an even colourand the beautifully figured grain that machines well and is uniqueto European Oak. We also endeavour to match the grain andcolour of individual components, selecting figured timber for thefront face wherever possible. Finally, all joints are pegged withoak dowel. This attention to detail can only be achieved withquality materials and experienced staff making individual handmade products. Oak planters are available natural or finishedexternally with oil for additional protection and to enhance thenatural beauty if the wood.

    Troughs

In some situations, a rectangular planter (trough) may be more practicaland provide greater planting potential than a square one. They can be

constructed to almost any size to fit a particular space or area and theheight can be adjusted to suit the surroundings. Large troughs can providea raised bed for general planting and for example wheel chair levelgardening. Troughs can be tailor made to provide planting over a widearea or long run including roof gardens.

Our Oak planters combine the highest quality of materials and construction available.

Trellis TroughsFor climbing plants and screening our new trellis troughs are ideal. They are

available with square or diagonal trellis patterns and in our full range of

finishes. To maximise strength, the trellis is framed and held in place betweenthe extended rear upright posts of the trough. Sizes and finial options can be

seen in the current price list.

Window BoxesWindow boxes can greatly enhance the appearance of a property... from both

    sides of the window.

They can be fitted to a wall or designed to stand on a window sill.

They are supplied with fixings and instructions for easy installation.

Standard LiningAll planters are finished internally with a black rubberised coating that provides basic protection from the damp compost.

Fibreglass (GRP) LiningThe addition of a GRP lining will extend the life of the timber further and provide a watertight base for internal use. The

GRP lining is moulded into the planter (not a separate, removable insert) and is easily drilled for drainage.

Internal useThe main factor to consider using a container internally is the drainage from the base. One solution is the option of GRPlining as explained above. All our planters can be used internally as the timber is fully seasoned. Please contact us if you
