    Blue Dot.

Tough, color-corrected safety coating contains MM59 to neutralize lacquer odor.

Evenly-distributed combustible filler assures consistent peak light outputand synchron ization.

Primer-coated super-sensitive filament assures firing even with weak batteries.

One.piece aluminum base gives perfect seating, assuresperfect electrical contact.

Positive trouble-{ree positioning in tlash reflector.

High Bolivian tin content in base-solder resists corrosion, eliminates burnishingor moistening-assures positive electrical contact.

    Here's how lamp ranges stack up:Up to 8,0OO lumens-Short range8,OO0-30,000 lumens-Medium range30,000'60,OO0 lumens-Long rangeOver 60,000 lumens-Extra-long range

Graphlike diagrams next to the flashbulbs tell at a glance 3 key facts about thespecific flashbulbs in terms of light intensity (Lumens):1. How rapidly the lamp reaches its peak intensity (indicates correct synchroni-

    zation).

    2. How much light output is obtainable.3. How long the bulb remains at or near its peak (determines most effective

    shutter speeds).

Each chart shows simple plottings of the intensity of flash for both clear andblue bulbs. The amount oI intensity is measured in "Millions of Lumens." Thetime interval is in "Milliseconds" (a milljsecond is 1 / 1000th of a second).

Note: Flashcubes are not measured in Lumens, but in a unit of light measure-ment called B.C.P.S. which stands for BEAM CANDLE POWER SECONDS. When-ever a reflector is used as an integral part of a lamp, it js more meaninglul andaccurate to rate it in B.C.P.S. than Lumens. A lumen unit is used to describe alight source where light is going ou in all directions. ln the Flashcube, where thereflector is part o.f the light source and the light is directional, we are only in.terested in the actual candle power reaching the subject. Hence, B.C.P.S.-Beam Cand le Power Seconds.

Clear or blue, all Sylvania flashbulbs are coated with a thin, tough Jilm of lacqueras a protection against breaking or shattering. For clear bulbs, the coating isoptically clear, wiil not affect color balance even when used with the most criti-cal color films Jor artilicial light. On Sylvania blue flashbulbs, the coating iscaretuily color corrected and balanced under the most rigid laboratory condi-tions. This provides maximum fidelity when used with daylight color films. Whenused with black and white Jilms the coating has little or no eifect on the ex.posure due to the characleristics in latitude ot the film itseif.

The blue top decreases Iight spill-over. The blue top increases lamp efficiency byshielding the lamp, boosts lamp lile by dissipatingheat more rapidly than ordinary coatings.

ASI CODES: Every Sylvania projector lamp is codedwith three letters assigned by ihe United States oAmerica Standards lnstitute. This combination oletters (Jormeriy called ASA) refers to a specific typeprojector lamp and should be used vr'hen ordering.

DOUBLE BRANDING: On some Sylvania Blue Topprojector lamps, you will find "double branding"-that is, two ASI codes. This means the lamp wilwork in projectors calling for either lamp type. Evenif the old lamp was a clear top, your customer shouldnot be concerned if he receives a double.brandedSylvania Blue Top projector lamp as a replacement. The Sylvania Blue Top will work just as efficiently,if not more so.

RATED VOLTAGE: Unless otherwise noted, all Syl.vania projector lamps are rated at 120 volts. A lampwith a rated lile ol 25 hours will operate for only15 hours (approx.) at 125 volts, with about 15%more light output and at a color temperature about50'K higher. At lower voltages, lamp life increases, but brightness and color temperature decrease.

IMPORTANT: A projector's cooling system is de-signed to operate etficiently only with specific lampv{attages. Lamps of higher wattage than recom'mended will not cool adequately, may damage opti-cal system, motor and/or film.

A quartz bodied arc source mounted within an op-tical dichroic glass reflector. The dichroic glass

diverts the heat from the film gate. Uses only 300watts but gives greater screen brightness than con-ventional 1000 and 1200 watt lamps. The result is apicture that is not only briehter but whiter. lts whiterlight (5000'K) makes the colors of the spectrumbrighter, more natural.

With the Colorarc 300, you can now place theprojector further from the screen and illuminate alarger screen area. lt is also possible to show moviesin a classroom without lowerjng the light level inthe room.

tru-beam Sylvania's revolutionary Dichroic Tru-Beam ProjectorLamps are available in two versions-DNE and thelow voltage Super

    QDNF. They were developed by

Sylvania for 8mm and Super 8 Movie Projectors.Their features include: Dichroic Tru-Beam ReJlectorfor greater efficiency, vented 2-pin base and snap-loc

socket for perfect alignment and cooler operation.Ballast fjlament insures longer life. Both the DNE andDN F use the tu ngsten halogen principle to give longelite, constant light output and true color rendition Jothe life of the lamp.

tru-flector Again leading the industry, Sylvania designed theTRU'FLECTOR projector lamp. Compact, poweriuland with a sealed-in silver condensing re{lector, thislamp simplifies the optical systems of Bmm movieprojectors by eliminating the need for external reflectors and condensing lenses. ln addition to thesnap-in base Jor easy prefocusing alignment, TRU"FLECTOR design permits operation with increasedlamp eificiency of over 300 percent! (A 150 watt

TRU.FLECTOR in an 8mm projector provides thsame screen brightness as a much larger 500'watlamp rn conventional optica systems.) Furthermore, recent modifications, utilizing "internal ballast construction," oJ{er two-part filaments-far more ruggeand lasting. The result: a lamp that actually "lets yo

it at th screen. The efficiencyof this system is quite limited.ln the Tru-Flector or Tru-Beam system, an internal re-Jlector acts as a condenser, collects almost a full hemis-phere of light and focuses itdirectly on the film. lnsteadof the light loss wjth standardoptical systems, the objectivIens collects almost the fulllight output of the lamp anddirects the brighter image

    supertru-flector

    dichroicsuperiru-flector

Featuring a screen brightness over 50 percentgreater than that of the original Tru-Flector, SUPERTru Flector design utilizes a special internal rellectorand extra-heavy filament; achieves a brighter, whiterlight at 21 volts supplied by a transformer in theprojector itself. Light output is 150 open shutter

screen lumens (compared to 95 original Tru-Flector)It is available for use with standard objective lensessuch as f/1.6 (DCA) or with large aperture obiectivelenses, such as f/1.2 to l/1.0 (DLG). Pin positionprevent insertion of lam p into prolectors notequippedto convert 120 to 21 volts.

This advanced projector lamp type features a Syl-vania-developed "cool light" reflector. Made of glasswith a dichroic coating, this extraordinary reflectoracts like a two-way mirror: beams useful light raystoward the lilm gate and sends heat rays to the rear.By removing the useless, non visible radiant energy

from the light beam and directing only the usefu

light through the lens, where it belongs, the dichroicreflector gives you a 5oyo cooler, safer projectolamp. The DLR "dichroic" is designed specifjcallfor 16 mm projectors.

S\LVANL\ how to identify a defective projector lamp

Just as the projector is a delicate, precision instru-ment, so is its "heart"-the projector lamp. And,just as the projector may fail to operate whenabused, so may a bulb "blow" or retuse to workany longer.

Sylvania's engjneers examine every lamp returnedfor replacement and can determine by inspectionwhy a projector lamp failed. Lamps that failed be-cause of manufacturing tlaws are considered validdefectives entitled to replacement under Sylvania's

    validdefectives

projector lamp guarantee. Lamps whose failure resulted only trom reaching the end of a normal burning Iife* are classified as invalid defectives anobviously cannot be replaced.Pictured and described below are two basic typeof valid defectives, as well as four examples of invalid defeciives which show tell-tale signs of normalife. Once pointed out, the signs are easy to readLearning them will reduce many o{ your headaches.''Averase rated life. lf incorectly used, of course, in wronCprojector, higherthan-normal voltage or improper positionshorter ljfe must be expected.

Early failure: Lamp is clean and

appears perfect in all respectsexcept for broken filament. Thislamp obviously has not beenburned any length of time, ifat all.

Leaker: A tiny leak in glass

envelope has allowd air toenter the bulb. Milky, cloudyappearance identifies thiscond;tion.

    normalburnouts

Normal li{e failure: Lamp hasobviously served normal ratedaverage life. Note the black-ening on top of reflector andtop of bulb. (lf lamp has ablue top, look under the topfor signs of blackening in anotherwise "new" lamp.)

Normal life failure: Lamp wasdesiened to burn horlzontallyand the telltale blackening lson the side of the envelope, indicating a normal Iife.

Normal life failu re: Thisshows another effect that canresult from normal burn;nglife-a blackened bridee.

Normal life failure: This lamhas blistered after it wzs usefor a number of hours. Glasbridge (under blue top) walso be blackened, as previouexample, indicating usage.

Sound is reproduced from a sound-track almostmagically. For it is Iight that does it: the light Jromthe Exciter Lamp passes through the iilm's soundtrack in intensjties that vary with the variations ofthe track, and registers on a photo'electric cell. Thecell converts the light into electrical impulses*andthe amplifying system converts the impulses intothe same audible, comprehensible words, whispersor music that were originally recorded.

Key to Jidelity in the reproduction of sound is theExciter Lamp. lts output must be constant: thephoto electric cell is not discriminating enough to

tell whether a variation in brilliance is due to a faloff of exciter lamp output or to a variation of thsound track. lf the light varies, the sound will bd istorted.

The construction of Sylvania's Exciter Lamps is aprecise as that of a fine watch. The Jilament, machine coiled for efficiency, throws out a brilliannon-lluctuating lighi. And each glass envelopeindividually inspected for flaws. This is Sylvania'sway of bringing new clarity . . greater jidelity .to sound projection.

The diagram below shows you in the simplest formhow sound is transferred from the film strip to theamplifier. Light from the Exciter Lamp (A)-lighttransmitter-passes through the lens (B). The lenstocuses light on the sound track of the film (C). Thislight passes through the sound track and into photocell (D)-light receiver.

The photo cell receives sound in the form of ligimpulses and converts it to electrical impulses or,other words, actual sound. These impulses, leavinphoto cell, are too faint to be audible. Thereforethey pass from the cell into an amplifier which manilies the sound to any desired audibility.

S\L\''.,.\\L\ projector and lamp reference guide

This guide contains an alphabetical listing of projec-tion equipment manulacturers, grouped by equip-ment type. To identity the Sylvania projector lampneeded for a specific projector, all you need is thetype of projector (i.e.: 8mm), the manufacturer'sname and the projector model. With this informationjn hand, turn to that manufacturer's listing, and theguide will do the rest.

When ordering a replacement lamp from Sylvania, simply use its three-letter ASI code (i.e.: CGT).

Where projectors made by a single manufacturerare grouped with a single lamp type, all projectormodels within the group utilize the same lamp.Where one or more projectors are grouped with sev-eral lamp types, each projector model within thegroup can salely use any of the lamps shown. Thepreferred lamp will generally be the one shown withthe highest wattage. While those of lower wattagewill be satisfactory substitutes, they will producesomewhat lower screen brilliance.
