SYMBOLISM WITH IN MEDIA

OPENING SEQUENCE’S

From looking at a variety of opening sequences I have found that many of them use symbolism as a way of giving hints to the audience of what the rest of the film will be about. It’s important that these hints do not give too much away as it will ruin the story, especially if there are twist in the film. This symbolism is often subtle and can be a good way of drawing in the audience towards your product.

My group and I like the idea of putting some symbolism into our opening sequence and we chose four areas that we think we would like to include into our opening sequence that is able to represent different aspects of our character.

ISOLATION My group and I have decided to only have one character within our opening sequence as I feel this will make the narrative easier and more clear for the audience to follow. When looking at the genres of drama-mystery I notice that the majority of them only include the main character and they are often alone through out the start of film.

We liked the idea of not featuring anyone else in the opening sequence apart from our main protagonist as this will help create the feel of isolation and help the audience understand that the main character is alone.

Some opening sequences that I watches do not show the face of the main character until the end, I felt that copying this convention wouldn’t be wright for our production as we want the audience to connect with the character and relate to them as early as possible by recognising there emotions.

MIRRORS When researching into film symbolism I found that they were various techniques used to represent different emotions. Mirrors are good way to show the audience that there is two sides to something or someone, they are also a effective way of showing the audience that everything is not as it seems to be. They are able to play with the ideas of reality and delusion.

Because we have quite complex ideas about the story of our opening sequence I think the use of reflections would be a simple way for us to show that there is complexity to our main character.

To emphasize the idea that our main character is hiding something or covering something up we were thinking about showing her putting on make up or wearing a hood.

DUTCH ANGLEWhilst learning about different camera shots and angles I become familiar with the Dutch angle. This type of angle is a god way to represent that there is something wrong or not wright about the situation . It can show that the character is distorted in some way and it is able to portray uneasiness.

Dutch angle is also another fairly simple technique we could use in our media product to represent complexity to our character and the situation that they are in.
