To dedicate the meeting, Ms. Saramma Kuruvilla, Chaplain, read outfrom the Bible and offered a word prayer. The programme was thenofficially opened by Dr. Santosh Varughese, Professor and Ag, Head,Department of Nephrology Unit II, following which Dr. Ebor Jacob,Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr. Indira Agarwal, Professor andHead, Child Health and Paediatric Nephrology, and Dr. Premila Lee,Nursing Superintendent, felicitated the gathering. The stalls were inaugurated by Dr. Ebor Jacob, DeputyMedical Superintendent, in the presence of Dr. Vinoi George David, Professor of Nephrology, Unit I. This wasfollowed by a time of socialising among all the patients with kidney problems – those on dialysis as well as thosewho have had kidney transplantation.

On 2nd March, 2017, a screening programme for high-risk patients (diabetics and hypertensives) was held at theurban health centre, RN Palayam, Kasbah, and Vellore, under the leadership of Dr. Anna Valson, Department ofNephrology, and Mrs. Rajeswari Siva, Head of Community Health Nursing Department. Fifty-one high-risk patientsunderwent clinical examination, measurement of BMI, blood pressure, blood glucose and urine dipstick for proteinand review of their personal-, family- and treatment-history. Of those screened, 88% were found to be obese usingAsian Indian BMI cut offs, 10 tested positive in the dipstick for albumin, and 3 patients were newly diagnosed withdiabetes. All of them received instruction on lifestyle modification and optimisation of their medications based on

test results.

Besides the screening programme, educational posters, display of dialysisfacilities, puppet shows on the subject, and demonstration of ideal dietsfor people with kidney disorders (by the Dietary Department) drew inthe masses, who responded with interest. Over 700 people attended andtook with them an increased appreciation of health maintenance.

This unique celebration of World Kidney Day 2017 at CMC owes its success to all the participants, patients andrelatives, staff, therapists and students, whose eager involvement was valuable to the organising Departments of Nephrologyand Paediatric Nephrology.
