DVAR TORAH BY RABBI METZGER [email protected]

Why a snake?

When Moshe and Aharon go before Pharaoh, the first miracle they perform is throwing down the staff which turns into a snake. It then swallows the Egyptian magicians’ snakes before reverting to being a staff. But why a snake?

Shemot Rabbah gives three possible answers based on how a snake represents Egypt and Pharaoh – 1. Snakes silence and kill, just like Egypt does by imprisoning people before silencing and killing them. 2. Serpents slither, twisting this way and that. Pharaoh and Egypt are similarly twisted and wicked but ultimately powerless against G-d. 3. Pharaoh is compared in Yechezkel 29:3 to a great serpent dwelling in the Nile who is ultimately ineffectual and toothless. Similarly here, Pharaoh claims that he will kill Moshe as soon as he sees him, but instead, he becomes scared stiff like a staff.

Why do you think it was a snake? Please email [email protected] with your suggestions Join us for more fun Midrash Questions Sunday night @8:15pm tiny.cc/UncoveringMidrash

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hashem told Moshe that he would take the children of Israel as his people and he would bring us back to the land of Israel. Yet the people did not heed that which Moshe shared. The children of Israel continued to toil unable to relate to the distant redemption promised.

For whatever reasons, Jews have historically struggled to coalesce as a people with a national identity. Perhaps understandable. In galus, we share both a national Jewish identity and a national Canadian or American identity. Even in Israel where everyone shares a Jewish and a statehood identity, we struggle to come together as one.

Events in the United States over the past 10 days in particular have tested us. On one hand, this is the President that withdrew from a capitulating Iran agreement and facilitated new diplomatic relationships between Israel and the Emirates, Dubai, Morocco, Bahrain and the Sudan. Others will join. These are unprecedentedly positive accomplishments facilitated by Donald Trump. We should be grateful.

On the other hand, his rhetoric captures the attention and imaginations of people who are anything but friends of the Jewish people. We all saw the flags and tee shirts displayed at the Capitol rampage last week. Camp Auschwitz? 6MWE? We should be concerned.

This moment is not too different from the Jewish-American experience of the Civil War. Fleeing persecution in Prussia, Jews of the Confederate states prospered, made to feel welcome with little anti-Semitism. Jews fought with distinction under General Robert E. Lee, not because they were slave owners, but because they developed a national identity. A southern Jew, Judah Benjamin was the first Jew offered a seat on the US Supreme Court in 1851 but declined in part out of fear his opinions could harm his Southern compatriots.

Northern Jews experienced tremendous anti-Semitism, from leading abolitionists. Some Massachusetts state office buildings still retain the names of famous anti-Semites. My hometown junior high school is named after a known anti-Semite of the day, Vice President Henry Wilson. Still, Jews served in the Union Army with distinction. As a Jew and an American, I shudder knowing Jews fought Jews on the battlefield that was a divided America. And at War’s end, we all went back to being Jewish Americans and went about the task of Reconstruction. We should never again allow politics to pit Jew versus Jew. Words can lead to war even amongst our own.

True, Orthodox Jews are voting more Republican in recent years. But the American Jewish collective, including Orthodox, historically voted Democrat. My home state of Massachusetts was the one state not to vote for Richard Nixon in 1972. As some of you know, I am not one to follow the pack; I have been a Republican since I registered to vote on my 18th birthday.

This past November was the first time I did not vote Republican. I did not vote for Biden either. But I did vote (for the only national Jewish VP candidate). Because while I am grateful, I am also concerned.

I am beyond outraged over events transpired in Washington last week. Republican and Democratic leaders bear collective responsibility. At a time when leaders should have been working together toward a common goal of a United States of America, they either ignored or fueled the flames.

To that end, some in the community took offence to a since deleted reply I posted on a friend’s social media comment regarding recent events. Now more than ever is a time for achdus and I regret not doing my part to foster the same.

Have a peaceful and meaningful Shabbat.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Weekly Halachah - R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]

Should I recite a berachah upon receiving my COVID vaccination?

A prayer is traditionally recited before a medical procedure (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 230:4), and this would seem

appropriate for a vaccination. Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon has published an updated version of the prayer, which I would translate as “May it be Your will, Hashem my G-d, that this activity should bring about complete healing and eradication of the plague, for me,

for the entire house of Israel, and for all of Your creatures, for You are G-d, King, a faithful and compassionate healer.” (Original

at http://tiny.cc/09g7tz)

Halachic authorities debate whether a berachah is appropriate, though. Despite our joy and gratitude, we are very careful about

reciting G-d’s Name outside of the protocols established in Jewish tradition. The range of views includes:

Rabbi Yosef Zvi Rimon contends that one should recite Shehechiyanu, as a broad berachah designed for many kinds of great

personal joy. It should be done with the first injection. (ibid.)

Rabbi Herschel Schachter prefers the berachah of HaTov v’haMeitiv, which is meant for occasions involving communal

benefit. It should be done with the first injection. (end of https://www.yutorah.org/sidebar/lecture.cfm/981904/)

Rabbi Asher Weiss weighs reasons in favour of the berachah and against it, before concluding that one who wishes to recite

Shehechiyanu should wear a new garment. (http://tiny.cc/19g7tz) Rabbi Shlomo Aviner concurs. (http://tiny.cc/39g7tz)

Rabbi Korobkin is of the opinion that Shehechiyanu should be recited without Hashem’s Name and the “Melech ha’olam” wording.

KAREN’S KORNER - ONE DAY AT A TIME When Bnei Yisrael were told of their forthcoming redemption, Hashem didn’t want them to learn about the far-flung future, only

about their immediate redemption, their arrival at Mt. Sinai, and their trip to Eretz Israel. It would have been too overwhelming for

them to try and comprehend anything beyond the immediate future. This is an important lesson in parenting as well. When we speak to our children, we should be mindful not to overwhelm with information about the long-term future. They can grasp what

will happen one day at a time. We can talk to them about today and tomorrow, but should avoid promising them long-term plans,

about which we ourselves may be uncertain. When talking about returning to school during the pandemic, it’s best to avoid talking about specific dates. It’s best to try and focus on making every day that our children are at home as pleasurable as possible.

Here’s something you can make with your children while at home to make snacking fun and healthy. You will need:

1 green apple

Green grapes Mini-marshmallows

Raisins or chocolate chips

Toothpicks Red strawberry or piece of licorice

Feel free to email Karen Korobkin at [email protected] if you have any questions! Shabbat Shalom.

MEET OUR BOARD: WITH ZAC KAYE

In our travels around the world , working for the Jewish Community, primarily for Hillel , being an Orthodox Jewish Family has meant that before going to a place we would do research on the Jewish community in that place. Growing up in Manchester in the North of England the richness of Jewish Life was always present and living where I did ,we were surrounded by Orthodox shuls and all the needs of Jewish Life. Suzanne had a similar experience in Hendon in North west london and given that following our Marriage in 1972 where we lived and where we would bring up our children would be determined by the community we lived in, Having lived in Sydney ,Australia, Vancouver BC, and Boston and of course in Yerushalayim as well as the UK working for the Jewish Community meant that schools, shuls and kosher stores were important , but nothing compares to what we found in Thornhill when we arrived in May of 1995. Having driven from Vancouver with a 3 year old toddler Chaya, and our teenage son Aharon , Michal was in her seminary year in Israel and Yudit was completing high school in Providence, Rhode Island. From previous trips to Toronto we knew what Thornhill offered, but having not been in the BAYT who knew what to expect. That first week of our arrival was Yom Ha'atzmaut and the BAYT was the venue for the annual Mizrachi event, and safe to say we were overwhelmed by the numbers and the ruach. This was our first encounter with BAYT, which of course was a very positive one and despite its intimidating size people were very welcoming . Eventually we joined the shul and while I was busy building Hillel in Toronto and Suzanne was also working full time in FundRaising, the children found their place at the shul, Chaya of course grew up in the Shul and Aharon had most of his friends at the shul and despite not having grown up here Yudit and Michal also created friendships at the shul. Suzanne became very involved with the Sisterhood taking on initially the Purim project , being involved with the Mikvah Committee and subsequently Sisterhood president for 2 terms , indeed she was the first Woman in the Shul to be elected to the Board and the Executive. My involvement really evolved over time serving as the Gabbai in the Hashkamah minyan for a number of years and the Gabbai and subsequently Parnas in the main shul, which of course led to being on the Board and the Executive. When you work professionally for the Community as I did for over 45 years , you get to understand the importance of Volunteers to the organisation ,and how in the voluntary sector relies on people willing to give their time, and so when I was asked to take on the position of President despite some strong concerns as to what would be involved , I did agree to serve . I am grateful to the tremendous group of people who served on both the Executive and Board as we wrestled with some very difficult issues, not least being the very difficult decision that we took on the Moatzei Shabbat after Purim to close the shul as a consequence of the growing epidemic and the first total lockdown. The importance of the shul to us a family cannot be understated and it is certainly reflected in our family with our daughter Yudit having served as Sisterhood Co-President to 2 years and her husband Chaim is on the Executive as 2nd Vice President, our son Aharon has already served as President of his shul in Chicago and my Brother in Manchester continues in his role as Vice President and as a trustee of his shul, our daughter Michal lives in Katamon in Yerushalayim. We can all be very proud of our shul of the tremendous work Rabbi Korobkin does on behalf of the community and all those who volunteer and give of their time for the sake of the Community, as I think back over our time at the Bayt I am reminded of the amazing visit that we had in hosting Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks Z"l and Lady Elaine sitting next to Suzanne on shabbat morning , and her being overwhelmed by the unbelievable number of people in the shul. Lady Elaine asked Suzanne is it always like this on shabbat with so many people, Suzanne replied that yes it is always busy in the shul but this week people have come from all over the area to hear her husband, and in response Lady Elaine said that she could not believe that so many people, so far away from London, knew about him. Yes the Bayt is special, long may it continue.

THANK YOU TO THOSE SERVING IN THE IDF If you have children or grandchildren currently serving in the IDF please email [email protected] and we will add them to a list to be kept in mind during davening. Please send in their Hebrew name and their mother's Hebrew name. Thank You.

BAYT Legacy for Future Generations

Morris (Menachem-Mendel) z''l , Rachel Schwartz ‘s late husband.

My husband was not a member of the BAYT. He was a member of the Shaarei Tefillah Congregation for many years, till his passing on January 18, 2005. My husband was a quiet and gentle man who loved his family and being a member of his shul, and he loved Eretz Israel, which he fought for in the war of Independence. His hope was to return to Israel. While he did not live to achieve his wish, he should be remembered for his love for his family, our Heritage and his love of Israel.

SISTERHOOD PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I know that Purim seems very far away, but as we turn the calendar to 2021, our committee is in full swing to bring you the amazing Mishloach Manot campaign that the BAYT community has come to love. This year, we need your help. Please log into your BAYT account and head over to the campaign page and select if you would prefer to receive an electronic scroll in lieu of a basket, are able to pick up your mishloach manot at the shul, or if you are unable to leave your house due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, please select delivery. If nothing has been selected, it will default to in shul pick up. By completing this portion early, we have ample time to organize our delivery routes, and pick up schedule. Should your situation change closer to Purim, please email [email protected] with the re line “MISHLOACH MANOT CHANGE”. As many of you have noticed, and commented, we have changed the format this year. First, there is no early bird special. As 2020 was a difficult year for many in our community, we have kept the pricing at $6.00 per name for this year’s entire campaign. With this gift to you, our community, we are asking for your help to please make sure that all orders are submitted by the deadline. Finally, we will need your help more then ever with packaging and delivery. One of the highlights of my first Purim as the Sisterhood President was seeing how many of you came out on the Saturday night before Purim to help with the packaging. If you are able to help with the packaging or with delivery, please select those options when logging into the campaign. We are in consultation with the shul’s Health Committee and Reopening Committee to ensure that we are in compliance with the necessary protocols when we will be packing and distributing the Mishloach Manot. On behalf of the committee, I thank you very much for your support this year and look forward to seeing you all again very soon!

BAYT DEDICATION IN MEMORY OF RABBI JONATHAN SACKS, Z”L

Our Goal: 300 SPONSORS

We are dedicating a Shtender on the Bima in the Main Sanctuary in memory of Rabbi

Jonathan Sacks, z”l. Rabbi Sacks, z”l, was a brilliant leader, scholar, speaker and author who appealed to the entire Jewish Community and to the world at large. The dedication is an expression of our appreciation for the Shabbat that Rabbi Sacks z”l

spent at the BAYT as a Scholar-in-Residence. The number of BAYT Members who sponsor this Dedication is a reflection of us, both as individuals and as a Kehillah of 750 families.

Thank you to the 109 families who have already contributed. Our goal is to have 300 families participate and make this an overwhelming expression of appreciation and respect.
