Safety and Availability

SYNCHROTACT® products from ABB areused for automatic synchronization ofgenerators with power lines and forparalleling of synchronous lines. They are designed for fully-automaticparalleling or monitoring of paralleling(Synchrocheck) by means of dual-chan-nel or single-channel systems.

SYNCHROTACT 5 is the fifth generation ofsynchronizing equipment produced by ABBIndustrie AG in Switzerland. It is newlydeveloped based on decades of experienceand focus on customer’s requirement.

Optimum availability

The family range of SYNCHROTACT 5facilitates other configuration concepts suchas dual-channel bypass (redundant) synchro-nization, which connects a manual or auto-matic system in parallel to the automaticsystem. With this configuration full availabilityis achieved, in case of one channel failure, with maximum safety.

Optimizedunit design

With SYNCHROTACT 5 a family of devicesare available which can be combined easilyto realize all possible reliable concepts tosatisfy precise client’s requirements in termsof safety and availability as described above.

A redundant dual-channel system provided inone 19 inch casing eliminates interconnectionwiring.

Maximum safety

The safety of the generator and network, while synchronizing, is insured by a compactdual-channel system including two indepen-dent hardware and software. One channel isfor automatic synchronizing and the otherone is an additional independent monitoringof the first one. For the maximum operationsafety the hardware and software of eachchannel are designed by different develop-ment engineers.

Applications and Functionality

Lowerengineering costs

♦ Fewer auxiliary relays are required, as thecontacts are designed more efficiently andinputs and outputs are separated galvani-cally one beneath the other.

♦ No separate power supply unit is required.

♦ A prefabricated unit is available for theselection of several paralleling points.Variety of applications

• For automatic synchronization andparalleling of generators

• For automatic paralleling of synchronousand asynchronous lines, transmission linesand busbars

• For monitoring of paralleling (Synchro-check) as well as monitoring of automaticand manual paralleling procedures includ-ing “dead bus”

• For the rated frequencies 50 Hz, 60 Hz and16 2/3 Hz

• For replacement of older SYNCHROTACTsystems or synchronization units by othermanufacturers.

SYNCHROTACT 5 is distinguished fromits predecessor models by additionalapplications and its fundamentallyimproved service and maintenance tool. Its well-conceived and optimized hard-ware design reduces the number ofrequired components to a minimum.

The extended casing fordual-channel parallelingsystem and dual-channelbypass system, can bemounted in a 19” frame

Fastcommissioning

♦ The convenient PC software “SynView”allows simple and fast commissioning of aSYNCHROTACT 5 system.

♦ The commissioning and parameter settingof SYNCHROTACT 5 can also be comfort-ably performed without a PC, using thecontrol elements in the front of the casing.Grouping within the parameter sets allowsfast access to the individual parameters.

♦ For setting system parameters, very simpleto use test functions are available.

♦ The SynView program indicates minimum, maximum and default values for eachparameter when a parameter is selectedand can provide a recommended value.

Special features• Up to seven sets of parameter for seven

different paralleling points can be storedin one device

• Freely-configurable digital inputs andoutputs.

“SynView” PC Program

SynView is the suitable tool for thesimple and fast commissioning ofSYNCHROTACT 5 equipment.

German, English or French languagesare supported by SynView which runsunder Microsoft® Windows™ NT (95 or98 on request). Other languages arepossible but not supported as standardand are not included.

Simple parameter setting

• Selection of the parameter set• Double-click on the desired parameter

group⇒ Display of individual parameters

• Double-click on the parameter value⇒ Set new value on the parameter in

question• Transfer parameter set to SYNCHROTACT 5

by clicking on a button or using the menuoption Write.

Functions

SynView program offers the following fourmain functions:

• Setting of parameters

• Display of actual values

• Transient recorder function

• Event and error logging.

Graphic output of synchronizing events

Synchronization procedures can be recordedand evaluated later with the transient recor-der function of the SynView program. Noseparate transient recorder is required duringcommissioning.

Easy fault finding within service work

SYNCHROTACT 5 features an event anderror logger for 256 events, which are storedwith date/time-stamp and the time past sincethe start of the synchronizing process.

The values stored in the logger can bedisplayed in clear text.

User-friendly display of actual values

• Analog bar display of actual valuesU

• Synchroscope display• Numerical display of voltage difference

∆U, phase-angle difference α and slip s.
