O’NEILL IS 60!This year O’Neill celebrates it’s 60th Anniversary from when Jack O’Neill � rst pioneered the world’s � rst wetsuit and in the process made sur� ng cold water waves for more than 30 minutes at a time a reality. To commemorate this Syndicate and O’Neill have teamed up to o� er everyone the chance to win a massive O’Neill branded special edition Fatboy bean bag! Submissions do not have to be professional shots or just a rider in the air, they can be taken anyway you like, tweaked and made old or just be old. The aim is to produce the best “Old School” style shot with anything wake related. Instagram style shots are acceptable and you can enter as many times as you like. Entries will close on the 14th May and be announced in the next edition of Syndicate Wake along with the winning shot.

This year Syndicate is launching a new, all inclusive obstacle jam. We will be nominating a certain obstacle at each destination that will be open season to session for everyone to have a chance. The � rst round of the Hot Spot series will be on the O’Brien Transfer at Box End Park on 31st March, come down, hang out, ride. If you don’t feel like you are con� dent on the obstacle yet, don’t worry - we will bring some pros to help coach you through it. There will be a prize for each session winner on both wakeskate and wakeboard, so come on down and get involved! See you there.
SIGNEDJonty joins Double Up International TeamIts been a long time coming, but considering his riding talent on the water Jonty Green has bagged himself a well deserved spot on the Double Up international team alongside our adopted Aussie Scotty Broome, who you will no doubt see around the parks on his signature model the Manual SB!This is massive for Jonty and the UK as some of our riders are gettin the recognition they deserve on an international level.
Jonty and Scotty will be pushing the brand forward here in Blighty with coaching clinics and demos throughout the summer months so keep an eye out!
CK Signs with ContourAnother home grown signing, this time for CK Koester and the Contour team. Contour recently announced the signing and we’re sure that we will be seeing some of the results in some clips of CK throughout the summer - never a bad thing!
England and Ireland success at the E&A Wake Championships
Sam Carne and David O’Caoimh both earned new titles as Europe & Africa Champions as of the beginning of March when the pair took down the top titles in the South African heat. Sian Hurst Open also had a blinder, taking down second place in the Open Ladies and our very own Harry Eames took third in the Boys.
Railapalooza
Wall Street Plaza, Orlando held a downtown rail contest for all to see in the capital of wakeland. Judged by Shaun Murray, Dallas Friday, Andy Lazarus and Nicola Butler the event was fully backed up by DJ sets, bikinis and a fat party... that’s the way we like it. Here are the results from the Saturday night main event:

Hove Lagoon Update
Hove Lagoon Watersports in Brighton have had a big winter, they have installed a second System 2.0 and have 2 new obstacles arriving very soon. The roof top rail from the London Boat Show will be taking permanent residence at Hove Lagoon from Easter onwards and a nice incline is on route too. The obstacles are all made by Industry Wake Parks and the improvements will really see the park jump up to the next level. They will soon have 2 System 2.0’s and 3 obstacles.
South Coast H2O
Portsmouth is is getting its own wake park, based at the Hilsea Lido just outside Portsmouth the wake park features a System 2.0 and obstacles from Industry Wake Parks. The cable is already installed and they open to the public on 1st April.

Loch Lomond Unlimited Riding
The boys at Loch Lomond are � ring on all cylinders this year and have upped their stakes with their Unlimited Riding package. Loch Lomond is the UK’s biggest inland Loch (lake to some of you). For an all inclusive £299, the week wake camp is the best value for money package that they o� er. 10 x 3 hours sessions of riding behind a mixture of Nautique 196, 216 or 210 and 4 nights accommodation is a lot of bang for your buck. It might be time for us to go and investigate...
LDB Changes Axis
LDB has taken delivery of his brand spanking new toy, an Axis A20. Starting the season with a fully pimped out wake boat, with the built-in ballast system along with the extra plug and play ballast, plus the power wedge to beast the wake up a bit more - all added on request from Lee. This boat will not disappoint anyone, currently the boat of choice for world champion Dean smith, legend Randall harris and is now the o� cial tow boat for Bro Stock. I’m sure we will be seeing more of his newest addition later this year.
Making full use of the new boat LDB will also be running three day training camps throughout the summer. With a mix of cable riding, rail riding and boat - there is plenty to be getting on with and a full range of coaching. The new Slingshot and Shredtown movie is about to be upon us! May will see the release of the Slingshot team movie Lipsmack - a total annihilation of any rail, obstacle or hard surface that comes in the path of the Slingshot crew. The trailer is out now and can be seen on SyndicateWake.com, if you haven’t seen it yet then go check it out. It’s epic.
FOXLAKE ADVENTURESScotland’s � rst Cable Park Opens Summer 2012Foxlake Adventures at Dunbar on the East coast of Scotland just south of Edinburgh has seen much activity over the last 2 years as three local business men have come together to develop a fantastic new outdoor sports adventure park on a 100 acre site on some of the most stunning land available.The key feature of this new site will be Two System 2.0 Cables on a newly excavated lake which is due to open in 2014 - however Tim Woodhead from System 2.0 who has been working closely with James, Alec and Duncan suggested the guys open up an existing small lake on the site and install a System 2.0 in 2012.Over the last two months much activity has taken place on site to prepare for our System 2.0 to be installed along with the Fox Den to enable us to open up for the Summer season 2012. Without doubt this would not be happening without the support of our good friend Raymond from Loch Lomond Wake Board who has provided our team with his expertise and encouragement to go for it this summer and we are planning to be part of the Loch Stock Tour 2012 along with working together on a new programme for youngsters called the School of Wake. Raymond on his last visit said “I reckon Scotland is about to have the most beautiful system 2 cable in the UK” Coming from a man who wakeboards on Loch Lomond that is some statement!

New distributor Nillson Worldwide have just started to bring in Phalanx wakeboards to the UK. The rider owned and run Phalanx is part owned by the heavy weight WSR man Ricky Gonzalez.
Also Drifter Distribution are now bringing in Vampire wakeboards to the UK now too, the winter has brought plenty for the team at Drifter and they now have these hand made German boards for you to cast your little peepers over.
BIG NAME RIDERS CONFIRMED FOR WAKESTOCK 2012
With Wakestock just over 4 months to go the Wakestock organisers are stoked to announce a whole host of wakeboarding talent competing at this year’s event. This year there are riders travelling from all over the world for their chance to compete for the title of Wakestock Champion at the boat comp, and the WWA Rail Europeans title in the pool gap comp. Okay so we all know what it means literally but saving too many cliches, I’ll cut to the chase and just say that at the end of the day, we’re all in this together and we shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover because what goes around comes around and you should never count your chickens before they cross the road.
So the seasons are changing, the weather is warming up and we are gearing up for another season in the UK. In the same way as the seasons have changed, so has Syndicate. We have moved forwards from our � rst year of adventures full of laughs and good times, great riding and some happy stories to go with our � rst year. But now we � nd ourselves in year two and Volume 2.1 and we are stoked. We want Syndicate to represent the riders and the people who are involved in this industry - it’s not all about the pros, it’s about all of us. We are inclusive not exclusive. We invite you all to become more involved in the scene and Syndicate, we want your feedback, we want your participation and we want you all to ride as much as you can. This is our philosophy, everyone is welcome - just like our new Hot Spot series that we are running throughout the season, visiting cable parks and getting involved with as many people as we can. The Hot Spot series (see pages 94-5) will bring the cameras to the masses and if you are there pushing it at one of our stops then you will be in the mag or in the podcast - simple as that.
Sure we are not by any means steering away from big stories and trips like the Aussie road trip (pages 42-9) or this month’s Schizoprenic from Chris O’Shea (pages 26-9) but just acknowledging everyone in the sport at whatever level you are at. After all if it wasn’t for us all buying equipment and supporting the wake industry we wouldn’t have pro riders and there would be no real direction or progression in the sport.

Progression is another funny topic, we hear it a lot, thrown around by some and meant by others. It is not only for certain people, it is also something that we all are part of - not least because it might be a bit boring if all we could do was ollie! In its most basic form progression has lead people to be landing some insane tricks but also hitting some of the craziest spots you can imagine. It is all progression, just like each of us has that craving for that new trick or the next level, it is what keeps us coming back for more; time and time again. Be a part of that progression and help the wake world move forward, even if it is only learning something new for yourself or helping someone else learn something because the better that each individual is, the better the collective. While you may not care about the rest of the wake public it may be worth remembering that the more people in the wake community progress, the more we all bene� t from it - be it pushing us forward or seeing new things that will draw people into the sport and make our industry stronger. It is not to say everyone has to go out and start hitting 60 foot drops or becoming a wake coach tomorrow, more just a general awareness of how we all have an e� ect on the industry and how it moves forward. Then again, who says what is right and wrong, progressive or regressive? What we do know is that seeing new, di� erent and exciting things are what keeps our interest alive and kicking, so we are sticking with that.
We hope you enjoy our new look Syndicate and some of the new features that you will discover throughout the magazine. Along with a few more on the way during the year - there is plenty going on, but more on that next time. It has been an awesome adventure to get us to where we are today and are very proud of our journey. The team we now have on board is going to be smashing it all over the country this year! We look forward to seeing you soon.

Chris O’SheaHe has seen it all, from the US Pro Tour, big US contracts and some of the most progressive video sections you will see. He has been there and done it. Now, moving into a new stage of his career Chris O’ has earned his stripes in terms of credibility but still � ghts to make ends meet despite having been pushing himself to the top of his sport. It seems to be working out for him with his latest video section from the movie ‘In-Transit’ winning him another award, this time video section of the year.
Having been in Orlando for nine seasons, returning to earn money working two jobs to support himself while he was in the US, Chris has done the hard yards, made money, lost money, got sponsors and lost them too. We wanted to hear his perspective on the industry, where he thinks it is all going and what could be done to change the status quo. While shooting for Syndicate Chris was winching a high ledge (pictured) and on his second hit sadly found himself locked on a bit stronger than he might have wanted, the upshot was a broken wrist. The risks of winching and putting yourself out there are clear and going for something that is pushing yourself, constantly leaves you open to things like this. It won’t put him o� though, it will just leave him out for 4-6 months with a cast and a sling. Not ideal for a rider or a writer. So we spoke to Chris and let him speak his mind on where he was at with his riding and what his views are on some of the politics behind the scenes and how they impact riders and the face of the industry.
Chris packs no punches, he says what he thinks and does what he believes is best for the industry as a whole. Having done well on the Pro Tour and secured a major contract with Hyperlite he was well on his way to doing what he wanted to do. With a lot of attention being focused on him including Rider of the Year, along with other nominations he was making his name, however he was not feeling entirely ful� lled by it. Chris went out on his own mission, to push freeriding as much as he could, compiling
some solid video sections along the way in Box of Fun and Rewritten that will leave his mark on the scene forever. Bizarrely his path led to him losing his board sponsor and being outcast from the scene in many ways. But why you ask? We’ll let Chris tell you in his own words..
The sad thing about this industry as it stands is that there is so much focus on competition riding and not enough focus on the freeriding element of the sport. We see all these riders going out there and doing their practiced routines, � exing their muscles on the dock or thinking they are king of the world because they win this or that. For me it is not about the winning, the contests or the titles. It is about doing something that is pushing the sport in a new direction, and creating a legacy. I want to create video sections that will be remembered and re-watched over and over again because it was di� erent and creative. Winching a four meter gap or a ledge that hasn’t been hit before is far more appealing to me than going out time after time to do the same things that you practice day in, day out. In my opinion it is what makes the sport progress and elevate it amongst the other sports such as snowboarding or skateboarding. Those sports have all started out with roots in competition and their industries have grown beyond them now, with some of the most cutting edge brands and riders not going near a competition, they are out in the back country or hitting a crazy drop downtown. These people are still pushing their sports and gaining a lot of credibility and respect from it. Wakeboarding needs to do this too so it can hold its own in this arena. It currently doesn’t get as much respect as it deserves because the wider world see only these contest runs with riders just going trick for trick, riding a short 75 feet rope and slap grabbing to get points, nothing di� erent to what we were seeing years before. Sure the tricks evolve but people who are outside the industry won’t be noticing that, they just see the same thing over and over, Tech wake tricks executed

the same way as each other with no individual style or � are about them.
It is the other aspects of the sport that will eventually help wakeboarding grow apart from the old industry of waterskiers running businesses and the contest scenes. It is the winching and progression of innovative spots that will make the sport stand up and be counted for its own merits. It has to earn the respect � rst, and so far the industry has been stuck in this mindset of competition that it is hard for those living outside that scene to make a living. It is the shortsightedness of the few that control the direction of the companies that have the money to support these riders such as myself but choose to stay with the � ock like everyone else and only get the names of those who are doing every comp they can. This leads those companies and many riders down this same path to just try and survive in the industry, until we see more rider owned companies coming through it will be continually di� cult to see major steps forward in the pro� le of the sport.
Wakeskating has seen some steps towards this, the boards are easier and cheaper to make of course but the direction that these new companies are taking is helping their sport reach new audiences and greater popularity. Ben Horan and his crew didn’t go ride for a Bob Archer brand (a big stake holder in some major brands). They made there own and by doing so created a passion and love for there sport stronger than they would have if they bent over to the monopoly of board companies. This is something that the wakeboarder industry needs to look at. Until we see this happening we will still be led to follow the contest riders by all the major brands and not those pushing the sport in a way that will be remembered and respected. Sure the riders doing all these contests are still pushing the sport, but only in a way that we have seen for so long already. This direction has not elevated the sport yet, it really is since the new era of freeriders and winching that we have started to see real development in the wider scene. Riders getting lots of exposure for hitting di� erent spots, be it drops, gaps or bringing a creative individual style that nobody has ever seen. Doing it all on a budget of two cheese burgers a day, while boring contest riders buying mansions and support whole family’s with there same day in day out boring 10 tricks. - we are seeing new things all the time and that is what is most important; to see wakeboarding take o� in the mainstream.
The way we have to continue is to look outside the normal con� nes of what makes a rider, for companies to see the bigger picture when they are looking at those involved in the sport, how they approach what they are doing and how they are taking on their personal challenges. It is by looking into the people representing them and seeing them for what they are, looking for riders that are in it for life - not just to win a title but those pushing the boundaries. In doing they create legacies not just a title but something that people will remember and talk about long after their knees have blown out.

Back deep in Australia
After doing something for such a long time it’s easy to burn out, or even question why you’re doing it at all. It doesn’t mean you hate it or never want to do it again; sometimes you just got to push all the bullshit to the side and enjoy what’s in front of you. Sometimes you just got to say fuck it, I’m going to do this my way. Take it back to grass roots level and enjoy it for what it is. Enjoy your passion. Do it because you love it. Competitions, Pro Riders and rankings are good for the sport. They provide a sense of direction, leadership and something to look up to. But we’re individuals right? So the most important thing is to get out there and do it your own way. This is how Summer Jam in Australia is. A four-day wakeskate event dedicated to all level of skaters coming together from all over, to hang out and do what they love.
I arrived with a tent to camp out for the week at the Go Wake Cable Park. The � rst two nights I was solo, but then the rest of the wakeskaters arrived and tent city was constructed for the weekend. Camping with thirty plus wakeskaters meant there was no end to the fun and shenanigans, but what happens at Summer Jam, stays in the memories of all who venture out for it. Tent city allowed me the chance to learn a bit of Australian slang, including a new meaning for the word “tinnie”. “Tinnies” are little aluminum boats, which a few of the Aussie guys had brought along for everyone to ride behind in the nearby river in the mornings.
Go Wake Cable Park is a great cable facility, with a mellow atmosphere and friendly sta� . Apart from the cable, there is a pool gap to winch and the Go Ride two-tower system also on site. We could also go winching at the beach ten minutes away or venture out early in the morning for “tinnie” sets on the river two minutes away. The GoWake two-tower system is probably the best two-tower system I have come across. It has the least amount of maintenance out of any of them and the cable is always consistently tight. Steve Dipple has had his creation up for over nine months and has only had to grease a few bearings.
It was cool to see a few people from di� erent countries here and get to ride and hang out with them all weekend. We started o� winching the � rst day down the pool gap. It was rad to share my � rst winch sesh with Danny Hampson. Two days later Travis Belsito had a crack and was getting close to a backside big spin. He was about to give up then Nick Taylor said he would give him a few dollars if he landed it next try. Soon everyone with a few coins joined in adding to the pot of winnings. Travis got super close on the next try, and so we decided to give him one more chance. He rode away clean, trying hard not to smile, but we saw him smirk a little. I think he came up winning about 50 Australian dollars and 10 U.S. dollars. Check out this kid if you haven’t already. He is one of the newest additions to the Water Monsters team and absolutely shreds. Nick Taylor went out there next and stuck a switch kick� ip twice down the gap to take the remaining 8AUD in coins from my pockets.

It was also a big weekend at the cable with wakeboard and wakeskate contests as well, with the � nal stop of the Liquid Force Rail Jam Series. It was one big party all weekend, although the DJ could have changed up the beat a few times. Dub step gets a bit repetitive after two solid days. But the contests provided heaps of variety, meaning that anyone has a chance to take them out. There was the Indy two-tower comp, Jet pilot King of the Kicker, Liquid Force Rail Jam, and Go Ride � at-water freaks.
It was rad being there with Danny and Aaron Reed. Guys I looked up to on the wakeskate since I started. But, the best part was seeing people younger and older than you presenting them selves and getting to watch their talent on the water. Guys like Chris Watson, throwing down 360 � ips. He had those dialed all weekend and even took the
best � at-water trick with a super clean one. Aaron Reed was on the mic at the time, which makes for a pretty funny show. The Australians got to listen to a true American soul. Another kid to watch is Daniel Grant. He wins nearly every event he enters on both wakeskate and wakeboard. Before he arrived at Go Wake he’d won 7 out of 8 events at Boardstock at Cables Wake Park Penrith, in Sydney. The kid eats nothing but candy and plays video games all day, then picks up a board races out and stomps everything he tries. It’s pretty impressive to watch. Blair Smith and Mayce Dipple were another two candidates to watch on the Go Ride. Blair stuck a pretty sweet front shuv to backside lip on the � at bar, and Mayce was throwing down a few � ip tricks. Ryan Leary also made an appearance near the end to join in on the wakeskating. And a few other fun ones to watch were Nick Currell and Zip Hayes. But most of all it was awesome to chill with everyone
and get to watch all the di� erent styles. Some of these guys are really professional and passionate about the sport and what they do. It was in a way great to see everyone so into it regardless of if they were a Pro or not. This was the beauty of Summer Jam there was no format for anything. It was just a time for us to hang out with one another and wakeskate however we wanted to.
On the last day of Summer Jam I almost headed home, but I came across the opportunity to stay for a few more days and get to see a bit more of Australia than just the cable park. I got to hang out feeding kangaroos and even got to hold a koala. Had to pay 15AUD, but why not? You only live once. Sometimes you just got to wing it and go along for the ride.

As always the London Boat Show is the � rst event on the UK wake calendar, with the show running in early January it is always a great way to break up the long winter o� season. Another added bonus is that being indoors there is space to sit down and not be haggard by the elements of the cruel British weather. With daily wake demos running throughout the show on the indoor pool being towed by a custom System 2.0, there is always something to see when you are there. Not forgetting the boat porn you can feast your eyes on, along with numerous shops and brands representing at the show, it is never a mistake going to the show. This year we also saw a wakeskate demo day where the boys came along and took wakeskating to the masses, followed up closely by a demo from the British team.
The show is held at London Excel, a huge indoor exhibition
centre located right in the heart of the London Docklands. For the duration of the show there is an enormous amount boats, shops and yachts that you can check out and climb on board a £5 million dream if you fancy it or head to the Nautique stand where you are always likely to � nd some banter and probably some refreshments of some kind.
This year saw free public demos of boards from Hyperlite and suits from Mystic to anybody that fancied having a dig at riding in the purpose built 70 meter pool. There was also a constant stream of talks and presentations from the riders about the sport and some of the products we all know and use. It’s not everyday you will see the likes of Nick Davies or Jonty Green up a stage talking about wakeboarding and what it’s like to be a pro rider...

With the pool setup hosting a tasty rooftop rail and kicker along with a ledge grind next to the commentators; it was set to deliver some solid action for such a compact setup. There was still plenty of space around the obstacles for the boys to � r o� some � at water tricks, aided by the higher pull from the System 2.0 there was whole host of hammers being thrown down, including some massive double s-blinds from the likes of Jonty Green and Nick Davies. Lee Debuse, CK Koester, Dan Nott and James Young completed the daily cast of the daily shows, tearing up the water and delivering some steeze to the audience. Backing up the wake action on the Thursday of the event was a wakeskating demo from a few of the common faces such as Terry Hannam, Taylor Dell, Zander Jones and James Harrington.
With the wakeskate demo taking to the water the ‘show wakers’ had a well earned.. okay maybe not that well earned but deserved possibly.. rest day. Taylor was fast out the blocks and was straight over the kicker landing an indy backside shuv along with a big and long blind 180. The rail was a fair feat given the skate approach available but the charger that is Terry Hannam took it on (not without having to have some personal words on a one to one basis � rst) and slayed it with a back board to back lip followed up quickly by a tasty kick� ip to boot.
Syndicate took some time out with the crew to watch the skating and get down with some haccy sac to keep the boys limber, playing haccy never seems to fall on deaf ears. As the evening wake comp was starting to see a few more familiar faces roll in throughout the day with the likes of Steve Dyer, Lewis Cornwall, Marc Rossiter and Louis Floyd showing up for a chance at the money that was up for grabs. With £250 on each area of the pool - � at water, rail and kicker - there was plenty to go around.
With practice taken care of, the two hit for each section format was quick � re and gave everyone a fair crack at the whip. Riders such as Deano Warboys, Harry Eames, Connor Jones and Nick Davies joining the already growing crew meant there was sure to be some hammers laid down on the water. The comp started with the rooftop rail, seeing some solid hits from all involved it was tight and fast paced. Some of the riders were charging hard but with Nick, Rossi, Floyd and Cornwall looking like strong favorites throughout it was down to the last round where Nick D pulled out a 180 on, 360 gap to 180 out which sealed his fate as cash winner for the � rst round.
Next was the “Big Air” kicker, once again - as you would expect the crowd was not left disappointed with some monsters being pulled out the bag, glides, 313s and a few more to boot being thrown down - the heat was on. Yet it was Steve Dyer charging the hardest with an enormous melon, late 3 as big and as steezy as they come to take home the cash. Now with two £250 prizes for the best air trick, all was still to play for for the remainder of the pack. Nick Davies made an early bid for the cash with a chunky double S to blind, the trick was matched but Nick’s intensity as always was hard to challenge. Deano Warboys made a solid e� ort for the Nick’s chart topper with another 360, late and tidy as they come, it may have had its’ roots as a 313 but the result was the same, second place and a handful of cash to Deano and another bonus for Mr Davies.
With the comp done and a few happy cats cruising around the late night opening of the show it was long time for some refreshments, the boys on the Nautique stand were well on the ball and the catering was taken

care of and there was plenty of refreshing to be done while checking out some of their new boats. Never a dull moment..
The Boat Show is not only a great way to break up an otherwise dull part of the year, but is also a great way to showcase the sport and those supporting it. With over 100,000 visitors to the show over the course of the nine days it displays (with the help of the show wake gang) what we do and helps introduce new people to the sport. With the free demos taking place in between shows, it opens up the chance to get on the water to people that might not get round to trying it or haven’t seen the sport yet. After all, without new people getting involved in the sport we might � nd ourselves looking at a stagnant scene.. thankfully we are far from that with an ever growing community and network of locations, thanks largely to those involved in the show (and many other events) and their direction in taking the sport forwards.

Double Up wakeboards have been around since 1996, when wakeboarding was new and still being � ne tuned into the sport it is today. The term ‘Freeride’, at times in the history of our sport has had connotations relating to athletes (wakeboarders) that were amazing riders that focussed solely on that, rather than the serious competitors of that era. They have their contest results, but will be names known forever in our sports history for being ground breaking in creative new tricks, style and a � are of what you could do with a board, bindings and a bit of water. Every era in wakeboarding’s short history has had its free riders, and it was through this way of thinking that the original freeride company was born. The idea of cruising about on your board and � nding your own style, with the hardware to back it up. The company was founded on the ideals of this rider, and designed products so that each and every time you hit the water it was a pleasure. No gimmicks, just plain good times on the water.

Caroline (Carro) Djupsjo was the international contingent of our trip and holding it down for the ladies all week. Hailing originally from Sweden, but this summer calling Australia home, Carro was killing it on the cable and on the boat all week. Defending European women’s champ and recently moving over to the DUP team, Carro spent the week attacking rails and kickers, and putting down some solid lines on the lake, as well as getting to know the native Australian animals. No I’m not talking about the rest of the crew, but the amount of Kangaroo’s, possums, and wide array of Aussie birds she was feeding all week. De� nitely getting her tourist on while she had a chance. With the upcoming European Championships and World Cup events she was not only getting the shots but surely getting in some practice for these events. No doubt with how her riding went throughout the week that we will be seeing more Carro on event podiums this year.
Luke Wulf, one of the original members of Double Up, is still tearing up waterways today and this week was no di� erent. Known not only for his ground breaking abilities on the cable, but as one of the most powerful and stylish boat riders Australia has produced. Luke was sticking toe side 900’s on the boat and � at water toe side 720’s on cable, when most people still had to ask, what’s wakeboarding? He was on the original team members on Double Up when Greg Nelson � rst created the company in 96.
Reece Jordan, another original member of the team at this time, has always been regarded for his power and style on a wakeboard and again did not disappoint. Before his days on the DUP team, Reece was creating and shaping his own wood construction boards, named ‘cordial wakeboards’. What started as a backyard project with his mates, would eventually lead to in� uencing the design of the � rst wood core production boards in the US. You could argue that if it wasn’t for Reece’s testing with these boards way back when, then we wouldn’t have the shapes, construction or � ex patterns that we do today. But we aren’t into arguing and neither is Reece. His knowledge of boards now, is testament to these early days and he is regarded within the industry in Australia as one of the legends of the sport. Luke and Reece are both great riders and people to have around on any wakeboard trip, and needless to say are key parts to the DUP team. They have seen everything come and go in our sport, and know exactly what in� uences making a great wakeboard setup. Not only that but they are 2 of
Cables Wake Park in Penrith would host us for the � rst few days of our trip. Located just outside Sydney, the cable park would bring a whole host of national and international riders together for the annual wake park event Boardstock. Riders over the weekend would compete for titles in rails, kicker, � at water and quarter pipe events.
In between competing in events, each of the DUP team was lucky enough to hit up private sessions on each area of the cable’s multi lake facility. The amazing sta� working beyond the home time bell, taking us for lap after lap well after the park had closed. Scotty Green feeling right at home on the cable, sessioned the quarter pipe chasing perfect shots, and putting his body on the line for it. Even after a few heavy falls and a run in with a sting ray later on in the week, Scotty’s motivation kept him, and all of us, going all week long to make the most of the riding opportunities and the crew we had assembled. Another rider at home on the cable lake, is Sam Johns. His explosive and stylish riding, has been sculpted with Scotty G at their home cable on the Sunshine Coast in QLD. He tears it up on the cable and can easily throw down some tweaked out craziness on the boat. He could possibly su� er from sleep apnea (undiagnosed), as I’ve never seen someone sleep quite so much, but when he’s up its all go. He was killing it behind the boat (and at the wheel of it when I was riding), stomping hits at the park, and helping out with whatever he could, all even with a bit of sore knee that wouldn’t hold him back...Johnsy is sure to be noticed when he hits UK shores later this year.
Greg Wood, had also made the trip along with the boys from the Sunshine Coast cable, despite having broken his foot weeks earlier in attempting double Indy Tantrum’s o� the kicker. His charging on obstacles in the past few seasons has been noticed by many and is a welcome addition to the DUP team. When he wasn’t keeping us motivated all week, Grego spent some quality time keeping his � tness levels up on the SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) out on the lake. Apparently that is something you can still do when you have a broken foot and you can’t get the cast wet. Keep that in mind...
the most humble yet motivating characters I have ever been able to ride with. They spent the week juggling family commitments, both with young families of their own, to be able to come along and show us all what ripping on a wakeboard is all about.
The Small Township and lake located on the south coast from Sydney, was the location for the rest of our trip. Lake Conjola has always been a special place to me, as its where wakeboarding really began for me in Australia. Since � rst moving to America 9 years ago, it has always been the place to come back and remind me of why it all started. Days on the water with cool people enjoying what this is all really about. Much has changed in that time and things are good but it’s always a great leveller to head back somewhere close to your heart. Using the surroundings of the lake and what I had lying around under the house, we were able to line up some pretty cool evening shots when rainy conditions were trying to slow us down. With some inventive use of lighting under the expert eye of photographer Damo Liddy, kickers, canoes, tree‘s, aluminium boats and in� atable tubes were all used to showcase each rider in photo and video. We were blessed with perfect sunshine for the last few days, and took advantage of morning and evening conditions boosting o� Double Up’s, shredding the � at water conditions and throwing down some turns during evening wake surf sets under lights behind the Tige’. The perfect way to � nish o� an awesome week.
Johnno Kohlman, is Double Up and Hardline’s resident everything guy. He’s been instrumental in reshaping the company, the team and the products to the quality they are now. Expert car and boat driving, organisation of wakeboarders and photographers, and some � ne culinary skills meant the week was destined to go o� smoothly. With his years of experience within the watersports industry, Johnno’s in� uence in making Double Up back into a globally recognised wake brand is unmistakeable.
With a diverse team of riders, and ambassadors to front the DUP brand, the transition into the next period of our sports history for this original wakeboard brand is in a good place. Not only in Australia but across the world, Double Up Wakeboards is again a brand to be noticed. Riders across di� erent continents are again getting on board and loving the renewed enthusiasm towards the brand and the product it makes. Quoted as being “the lightest, stiffest construction in the Ronix line” the all new One Timebomb looks to be something rather special. Said to be the reason Danny Harf is landing so many doubles, as seen in DEFY, the Timebomb core has taken the One board to a whole new level. The shape of the One boards for 2012 has been tweaked a little, recessed fins make the board feel a little looser on the water and give a quicker release off the wake, the variable rail has been blended to give a more predictable edge transfer, and to top it off a new rocker line designed to help you keep that speed throughout your run. The Timebomb edition is extremely limited for 2012, we only 50 units across the sizes hitting the UK early April, and with a board so rammed full of spec they will be pretty hot property!
For 2012 a special edition of the 3 times WSIA “Boot of the Year” One Boot was created to go alongside the launch of Danny Harfs DEFY movie and they hit the UK early April. Just like the Reflecto boot of a few years ago you get a signed copy of DEFY a few bonus goodies and stickers etc and a set of One boots in an extremely sick and extremely limited colourway. As far as conventional wakeboard boots go, you would have to go along way to beat the One boot, quite aptly named for many this is the One and only boot to consider year in year out. For this new season the boot has been tweaked and improved once again, cool little feature like “feet belts” prevent heel lift and the materials have been upgrade so your one boots will last you even longer. There are only about 50 pairs of the DEFY One boot hitting the UK so if these tickle your fancy hit up your local Ronix retailer pretty quick to get your hands on a set.
This board needs no introduction, voted best boat and cable board, as well as being called “the coolest board I have ever ridden” by two of the magazines in the USA the Phoenix has already got quiet a reputation. On top of this its rider the one and only Marc Rossiter is killing it on the rails with this board, being voted best rail rider for 2011! The Phoenix has a softer flex pattern for those who want to press the hell out of those rails in a Rossi-esque fashion, with a super strong Sintered base that can take all the punishment you can throw at it. For the boat it is perfect for those riders who ride a little back foot heavy, with the pop being similar to that of a snowboard you have to work the board to get the air time, but get it right and you will soar into the flats!
Based closely around the award winning One boot, but at a price tag that Frank can afford! Frank is a dedicated ladies man, so he spends his money chasing women and getting thrown out of a night clubs so he needs a boot that doesn’t cost the earth! Once he has sobered up Frank wants to be the one you talk about at the cable park, whether he is “all the gear and no idea” or the sickest rider you have seen that day, as long as your talking about him and his neon orange boots Frank is happy! So less about Frank and more about the Franks, heat moldable intuition liners and all the bells and whistles you expect from the top end Ronix line with a kick ass colour scheme. And to top it off package this up with Franks brother from another mother Bill and you have a partnership that would make Starsky and Hutch or Maverick and Goose jealous!
Probably the freshest graphic around for 2012, something that is now expected from the Ronix Bill and year in year out they do no disappoint. The combination of the standout colourscheme topsheet and the totally random cookie base graphic create a board that has caught everyones eye this season. As for the spec the Bill comes with the super tough Sintered Base as standard and 4 extra slider fins so you can customize your ride. The board has quite a late rocker to help give you that aggressive punch off the wake and make that last little dig for the raley a little easier. Combine this board with the Franks and you have one kick ass package that will make whoever you ride with dribble with envy!
Ronix have always had some of the best boots on the market, sharing a factory with the king of snowboard boots Thirty Twos pretty much guarantees this, and now for 2012 they have added a more affordable closed toe boot to the range. The Preston boot has a similar fit to the Frank except without the price tag and a graphic that’s a little less crazy! So for all of you out there who thought your budget only meant that open toes when on the agenda, think again and check out the new Preston boot from Ronix!
Don’t let a board shape dictate your riding style, Austrailia finest Miss Hayley Smith worked with legendary wake coach Mike Ferraro, who arguably knows more about fluid dynamics than anyone else on the dock, to create a shape for all abilities to fall in love with (and not just because of the graphic). The board combines a 3 stage lift in the centre but a continuous outer rail, so you get speed from the continuous rail and this then combines with the vertical lift from the 3-stage. To top this off the board comes as standard with the super strong Sintered Base, and then you cannot talk about the Quarter Til Midnight without a mention of the graphic which once again is bright and fresh whilst keeping that sense of sophistication that only Ronix knows how to give.
There is a very good reason that guys don’t wear high heels, not because they don’t match their dress, but because there is a big difference in the foot shape between most ladies and guys feet. So therefore the ladies need a custom built boot made 100% with them in mind…. Introducing the Faith Hope Love! Not just a guys boot with a bit of pink on, the FHL was designed from the ground up focusing on what ladies need when they are on the water. A slightly soften liner in the lower half of the boot for added comfort without losing any support around the ankle. New for 2012 is the memory foam which has been added to the lining of the boot for that luxurious feel. The graphics were designed by perhaps the classiest lady on the wake scene Miss Emily Copeland Durham (even her name is posh!). The boot gives you the look that is red to grace the red carpet and the performance to hit that double up at the end of the lake!

Designed specifically for one of the most progressive cable riders in the world, Nick Davies, the Process combines subtle cable specific features with a responsive and explosive shape. This series features new multi-teared base channels that create unmatched edge hold and speed into the wake. The four removable P-Wings fins, all set at a 9 degree angle, allow the board to initiate extremely responsive edge transitions. Slightly rolled edges between the feet and at the tip and tail are strategically placed for durability and feel while on rail, but are not so exaggerated that they affect the performance of the board in any way. Finished off with full Enduro base construction, the Process series will hold up to anything you can throw at it.
Jimmy LaRiche spent a lot of time this off-season thinking about how to create the perfect boot for his style. Designing something that was supportive with great flexion was his main goal. Introducing a whole new look to wake footwear was an added bonus. The AJ boot takes everything Jimmy was looking for from a performance standpoint and packages it in a progressive, street inspired boot. The lower cut of the cuff allows a rider the mobility they need for poked out tricks while the integrated Heel Hold Down System provides added support. The new AJ also utilizes a traditional lacing system for a hassle free session and the added benefit of customizing your lace color. The new AJ boot is the perfect combination of style and function.
The Union series is the culmination of years of development and the combina-tion of our most advanced materials and construction methods. Inspired by our team, the Union series blends the functionally of a traditional wakeboard with the flex and feel of a thinner park board. Our new Crossover Core combines both Nova and E-Core materials to produce a lightweight feel with maximum durabil-ity. The 360-degree ABS sidewall construction provides superior impact protection while the Sintered Enduro base offers our most durable running surface to date. After many prototypes were shaped and all of the testing was done, Rusty could not be happier with the end result. Beginning with the overall volume of the board, now reduced by 15%, the Marek is lighter than the original generation. Maintaining a responsive edge and speed into the wake was key in the new design. The Abrupt Continuous rocker line produces great pop off the wake while allowing the board to maintain the quick feel it has been famous for. The next generation Marek features slightly mellower base features resulting in a quicker release off the wake, allowing a rider to initiate a trick sooner. This new generation of Marek is everything you have come to love about Rusty’s shapes in a leaner more responsive package.
The Team boot offers mid range support for the rider looking for a little extra flex, but with no loss of hold. Dual quick cinch lace zones and seamless liner construc-tion allow for maximum adjustability and a fit that produces no pressure points. Finally, the Team utilizes the new Low Pro plate system for the closest foot to board connection possible.
The Syn is the shape of choice for It Girls team and is proven on tour, cables & sliders. The Syn carries awesome speed into the wake and has all the pop you need. With a variable edge design which rolls from soft between your feet to a sharp cupped rail tip and tail, this board is as quick and responsive as they come. A new feature that strays from traditional Hyperlite shapes however is the Syn's shorter curved molded in fins. Ending almost two inches from the tip and tail of the board, its just enough fin to know its there and working but nothing to delay release off the wake.
Until now, there has never been a boot in the Hyperlite line designed specifically for a female rider. The completely new Syn boot is built from the ground up to fit and function for ladies looking to take their riding to the next level. Starting with a ladies specific last, the new Syn has reduced internal volume and a lower cuff to accurately fit a women's foot and calf. The dual Quick Cinch lace system also allows for fine tuning of boot tension between the upper and lower zones. All of these features are wrapped up on our new Low Pro plate system which puts the rider closer to the deck of the board for maximum feel and control.

Dura-Rail side walls), the Baker adds more rocker, a bit siffer flex pattern, molded fins and bottom contouring for the ultimate go-anywhere, ride-anything and not worry about it board. The variable edge profile is fat through the center 14" of the board and quickly tapers to a more refined edge at the boot position to the tips of the board. This gives the board a unique floaty feel when centered, transferring to deep-set edge when carving. The expanded DELTA base keeps the water cleanly breaking off the tail of the board, reducing rocker-induced drag and providing optimum release off the wake. The molded fins are as thin as possible for minimal drag and optimum control, and which combined with a 3-stage rocker for just the right amount of kick. The Clean V bottom through the center of the board makes the landings buttery soft.

In the past, boards that were great on the obstacles suffered off the wake and vice versa. Not anymore. The Paradigm forges a unique union between wake and park riding, a board equally at home shredding rails or boosting off the double up. Featuring our new Fusion Core with top-to-bottom full-length wood stringers, we utilize a heavily ribbed cross-section and tapered geometry to control the flex of the board. The result is a board that is stiff through the midsection with flexible snappy tips, allowing the board to carve with incredible energy and accelerated boot off the wake. With HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) base and rails, the Paradigm is as durable as they come and is quickly becoming an O'Brien team favorite.

Caller, Sophie Cordery, Tor Young & Jo Andrews) tell Syndi-cate what they have been up to this winter.
The British weather can be pretty frustrating for us UK wakeboard girls. Whilst we have some of the most beautiful summers, the winters are not so awesome. It’s not always possible for everyone to jet away somewhere hot through the o� -season, and that’s how the #WakeGirlsGo idea was born. This winter us UK wake shredders have been trying out some di� erent sports to keep ourselves active, stoked and challenged while the lakes have been frozen. At the end of last season, Lex sent out a Facebook message to all the wake
girls, suggesting that we go away to the beach in Croyde for a weekend sur� ng… and of course everyone jumped at the suggestion. The more we all spoke about it the more excited we got, especially as she hadn’t told us any details apart from head to the local pub ‘The Thatch’ for Friday night and bring a wetsuit. When we arrived, we found out that Nalu Beads had sorted us out with a surf instructor, a photographer and a little cottage just � ve minutes from the beach. Having not seen each other since the last wake comp in September, there was lots of beers and catching up to do in the pub

before heading down to ‘Sur� ng Croyde Bay’ in the morning. We had a quick lesson up at the surf school on the sand, before grabbing our boards and hitting up the sea. Due to the balance technique being pretty similar to wakeboarding, it wasn’t long before we were all up on our boards, riding the waves (admittedly on whopping 8ft foamies but claimed!). Getting cocky we decided we were good enough to take on some bigger waves but soon realised we weren’t when we found ourselves washed up on the beach scattered 100 metres apart, feeling like fools! After an amazing lunch and a cheeky shandy we headed back out for another stint in the ocean and some more ‘washing machine’ episodes, near death experiences, and crippling hysterics! Sur� ng is hard work, no mistaking! By the end of day one we were all stoked and exhausted so trooped home for a rest, a shower, and a quick viewing of ‘The Lion King’ before heading back out to the pub for a night of debauchery. We all had a fun time hanging out with the locals, drinking ourselves silly, and getting up to no good! We’ll leave the rest up to your imagination! Sunday’s start was a little subdued for obvious reasons, so a Nalu Bead making workshop on the surf school’s roof terrace, complete with goodie bags and extreme cream teas was just the order. Feeling rejuvenated, we headed back to the beach for some more wave-shredding action in the afternoon! Again we all got an A* for enthusiasm but before we knew it the sun was starting to set. Reluctantly we called last waves, got changed out of our wetsuits and headed o� in our di� erent directions with beach hair and huge grins on our faces.
To follow on from our #WakeGirlsGoSURFING, Steph organised for us to hit up the FlowHouse in Bedford. The surf weekend was so much fun that we were all gagging to get back together for some more shenanigans. On route to the wave simulator (AKA The Flowhouse) we went for a cheeky blast of (couldn’t resist!). Although it was one of the

coldest rides of the year, once we had our gloves and boots on it was great to be out on the water. It’s always fun at MK, especially with all the girls riding doubles, � lming and laughing… plus they have the sickest rainbow rail. After our ride we stopped o� for a few mulled ciders at the local pub to defrost before the weekend really began. Once we arrived at the FlowHouse, Piers Hampson (Marketing Manager) showed us to our bunkroom, the changing areas and the spa before joining us for our private FLOW session that evening. Adam, our instructor (and Jules’s subsequent BF!!), had us on body boards to start with to get the feel for the wave. We were mastering barrel rolls and body sur� ng just � ne(ish) so we got straight onto the boards. Flowboards are about the same length as a wake skate, but only two thirds of the width. Our amazing wake skills helped us out a bit on the � ow rider… but not enough to master any big tricks. Sarah was putting in some turns, Jo was spinning to win doing 3’s and 5’s and Soph managed a little ollie. Dropping in from the top was fun too as you would get to the bottom of the wall, stand for a few seconds and then eat it, brilliant! We weren’t prepared for our heads to hurt so much from laughter as we watched each other stack over and over again! A tiny lapse in concentration saw each and every one of us eaten! Flowriding was followed by a well-earned sauna and hot tub session in the spa (yes we were spoiled!). Hunger set in and a spot of dinner was much needed to line our stomachs before hitting the town for some serious maneuvers on the D-� oor in Bedford’s most chav-radical pubs and clubs!

Sunday saw us back on the water for some more wave carnage, this time joined by photographer Kay Ransom who was on hand to capture all our brutal stack expressions, legs akimbo and general lunacy. It’s been awesome to ride with the other girls and try out some new sports over the winter. In fact we’ve had so much fun hanging out and riding together in the o� -season that we have already planned some more #WakeGirlsGo adventures for the summer - snowdome-boarding, boxing (with British Cable Wakeboard Team Captain Ralph Young!) and golf all to come… Thanks to Lisa at Nalu Beads, Mark Robinson and all the guys at Wake MK, Piers Hampson and the crew at the FlowHouse, Rae and all the other instructors at Sur� ng Croyd Bay, and of course our amazing photographers Rob Tibbles and Kay Ransom.

Nor can you live riding your board around a lake but that is another point. ‘The Other Side’ looks at what people in the industry do when they are o� the water to keep them � t for riding or things that just � ick their switches. Dan Jordan gives us an insight into his world o� the water and what he thinks about it all... He’s been out of action for the best part of 2 seasons from a back injury, but should be back riding again soon.
What was your sports background before you started wakeboarding?My Dad was and still is into his sports, and luckily enough I got shoved onto snow skis at about 3 and was on his back water skiing at 4. Windsur� ng was another sport my Dad and Mum were into so after crying my eyes out learning (it is the most boring sport in the world to learn) I got onto the plain for the � rst time and have been enjoying it ever since. The waves are another level, so unpredictable and powerful, it gives you a fear factor that I found wake boarding sometimes lacks. However you have to be able to travel or live on the coast to get the best out of those sports and wakeboarding is pretty central and geographically un-dependent so was an easy sport to learn and when fuel was cheap back then free tows were always going :)
What other non sport activities have stayed with you through the years?Cooking, � re spinning, and DJing. I’ve always loved music and that is a massive part of my life, although the only Instrument I play is the didgeridoo I got a crack copy of a DJ programme 8 years ago and started mixing. It’s a great way of zoning out and switching o� . Fire spinning links in with music too as you can use the stick to extenuate moves along with a beat. During a stretch In a wheel chair and on crutches I learnt how to throw them round out of boredom, the � re sta� was almost the same movement. What would be your choice of (sport) holiday right now?Snowboard holiday, to the states Revelstoke or Kicking horse, back-country all day long. I would actually do terrible things to be there next week....
What do you value about the wakeboard scene?The welcoming friendly atmosphere. It’s not intimidating or territorial like a snowboard park or local surf spot. You get to meet a lot of sound people.
What has been the most helpful sport for wakeboarding?I guess I’m hoping that mountain biking will help build up leg muscles which may protect my knees better... Like Eddie’s and many others knees, they have de� nitely seen better days :( SUP (stand up paddle boarding) has been a good sport, not only cause its mellow and similar to longboarding, but with wakeboarding killing my lower back o� for about 18 months, it helps build up core muscles. What are you yet to tick o� the bucket list?My Dad and I want to try a sport we can carry on doing when we are both in the knackers yard so para-gliding is on the list. -The Mongol rally with the boys should be a laugh. -A Heli-Boarding trip with Dad and some mates to Russia...one day. -Getting out to Australia with my lady to learn to surf properly and go climbing with Auzzie Nick and Big-Al (who set up Uni Wake). -Keeping a down to earth team of quality riders for Slingshot. - A summer alps mountain bike trip using lifts!

PASSING TIME With Richie HineyIf you are trying to stick your � rst 360 or just struggling to get your spins consistent then this tutorial might be the answer. It’s all well and good being able to huck a spin but unless you pay attention to the intricacies of the handle pass you will struggle to get past the basics.
I am going to strip this down, step by step and start from the very beginning trying to keep my explanations as simple as possible. The � rst thing you need to do is get your head around the direction in which you are going to rotate, it’s no good just charging at the kicker and hoping that you are going to work it out when you are airborne! It is all about control and the only way to get that is to know exactly what you are aiming for. Generally speaking the � rst point of call is the frontside spin – approaching the kicker on your heel edge and passing the handle with your back hand. The next step is the backside spin – again approaching the kicker on your heel edge but passing the handle with your front hand to your back hand behind your back. Some people prefer to spin backside so don’t write o� the idea of learning backside spins � rst.

Approach the kicker at a reasonable pace and try not to � atten o� until you are just about to hit the kicker. As you leave the kicker make sure you keep your chin up and both hands on the handle for the initial pull.
Give it a big pull (the harder you pull, the faster you spin) into your left hip and then release your right hand from the handle.
Now for the most important part! Keep the handle close to your waist and twist your left hand down towards your right back pocket. The reason you should twist the handle is to present it for your right hand to grab.
Reach around for the handle with your right hand and as soon as you grab it let go of your left hand. Now you will drop down with the handle back in your front hand ready to ride away.
I would suggest grabbing a handle or a stick or something and practicing the motions before giving it a try. If you already know exactly what you need to do when you are in the air you will at least double your chance of sticking it!

Troubleshooting
If you are landing on the board in the correct direction but without the handle then you are pulling hard enough to start but may be letting go of the handle before you have passed it into the other hand properly.
If you are getting hung up and not getting the full rotation then you may be concentrating too much on the handle pass and forgetting to pull the handle � rmly with two hands to initiate the rotation.
If you are going o� axis and landing on anything other than the board then you may be letting the handle get too far away from your body or you may be starting your rotation when you are still on the kicker.

Who and why was it taken? This is a shot of Nick Davies riding at my ‘home cable’, WakeMK in Milton Keynes. I had heard that several pro riders were going to ride at the cable for an upcoming magazine shoot so I knew there would be some great photographic opportunities. On the day everything just fell in to place with stunning afternoon sunshine, little wind and some great riding from Nick, Jonty Green, Matt Crowhurst, Will Manns, Chloe Goudie and several other local hero’s too. There were a couple of other pho-tographers there but none in the water so I knew I’d get some unique shots, something a photographer should always strive for. Where and when was it taken? This was in April 2009 at WakeMK, it was perfect conditions for shooting the obstacles on the far side of the lake as the riders would be heading into the sun giving me shots of the riders com-ing towards the camera that were nicely illuminated with the warm, late afternoon sunshine. There was also very little cloud so I knew that shooting from a very low angle would show the riders against the plain background of the blue sky. How did you get the shot you wanted? With the sun setting behind me and blue sky giving minimal distractions in the background all the attention would be drawn to the riders. Having photographed wakeboarding for many years I’ve always thought that big tweaked out grabs and slides work best for photographs as often a single image can’t show the dynamic na-ture of our sport as well as the e� ort and skill of a complicated spin – they tend to work best in sequences of photographs or video. Because of this I asked the riders hitting the wedge in the photo to go big and tweaked out so I could get stand-alone, stunning images. Using a waterproof camera case I could position myself in exactly the right place in the water giving me the low angle I wanted which, combined with a wide angle lens, would em-phasize the height of the trick and make sure the rider was shown against the sky. Being a wakeboarder myself I knew where they would land, the angles I wanted for the shot and, most importantly, where I could be in the water to be as safe as possible. I only shoot this close from the water when shooting pro riders as they’re more in control of where they are and more able to compensate and maneuver should anything go wrong. favourite images and I did submit it after the shoot along with several others some of which had also been ‘tweaked’ for an arty outcome. They did use one of my images in it’s original colour form but not this one. In my experience wake-boarding magazines have tended to print un-adjusted colour images to show the reality of the light/location/rider/clothing etc. I haven’t seen many printed images like this one – I have no idea why as I believe artistic interpretation of an image can add to it and present it in a very di� erent light. However, I’m a photographer, not an editor so I guess you’d have to ask some editors why they haven’t published it before! Tell us about yourself. mansion houses to Oxford colleges, judges to scientists and SCRAM jet intake cones to children’s books! The way I describe my business to most people is that I shoot anything except weddings! Before being a photographer I was a consultant engineer but that just didn’t suit me so I bought a camera, taught myself how it works and built a business around what I enjoyed. It seems to be working so far as I have won several regional and one national award from the British Institute of Professional Photography. I am also an Associate member of the BIPP, a quali� cation that was achieved with a portfolio of wakeboarding images. I’m always looking for that ‘something a bit di� erent’ for my pictures and have a few ideas for the future that could be interesting!
Cameras and settings used? Canon EOS-1D Mark II, EF 28-135 IS lens at 28mm, Ewa-Marine waterproof case. Camera set in shutter priority mode at 1/1600s (to freeze movement) giving f6.3 at ISO 400 . Motor drive at 10 fps and focus set to AI Servo to track the rider. As the rider went over the wedge I tracked with him relying on the fast shutter speed to freeze the movement.

What would be your ideal season this year?To keep on progressing and having loads of fun along the way. I have some great friends to ride with at lots of di� erent cables across the UK and would also be really pleased to make it into the GB team again for this year.
If you could organize your perfect wake trip, where would you go and who would you take with you?Hipnotics in Turkey, it’s such a sick place to ride, great weather , great crew, and would take all my friends that I ride with, but not my dad!
What would you like to see more of this year in the world of wake?To start with, more prize money in the sport for younger riders lol, more wakeparks with di� erent obstacles to hit and how about some system 2 comps?
Who is your favorite non-wake athlete and why? Shaun White as he’s such a legend, great skateboarder and snowboarder which is my second favorite sport.
If you could be one person in the world for a day, who would you be and why?Apart from my dad so I could then get me to give me loads of money, or would that be my Mum?!?! Lior Sofer as I’d like to know how it feels to land such mad tricks that he does and he’s a really great guy to know.

Welcome to Syndicate Scott, how has the winter been treating you? I have been great thanks and injury free which makes a bit of a change for me, over this winter I’ve just been ticking over with my wakeboarding and hitting up the indoor & outdoor slopes on my snowboard.
We saw you at the Boat Show recently, is that your � rst time riding there, how did you � nd it?Yes it was my � rst time, and I was really excited to be asked to ride as part of the GB cable wake display team, and was stoked to have been asked by Tim Woodhead (from Industry Wakeparks) to also ride in the competition. It was great to have a chance to ride with the Pro’s and in front of the large crowd that came to watch.
You have been hitting the podiums all over the shop in the past few years, what was your favorite result and why? That’s a tough one as I’ve been lucky enough to compete abroad on a few occasions, but would have to say my biggest achievement so far would be the Silver Medal in the IWWF Cable Wakeboard Worlds, with the bonus of Team GB taking the Gold, especially as I was still recovering from a knee injury.
Would you rather a medal or a new trick - what medal or trick would you want? Well the medals will probably come with learning new tricks anyway, so new trick, Connor Jones’ trick the Con Air (Raley Backside 315) would be sick!
Do you train a lot for your comp runs, practicing your sequence of tricks or do you just see how it goes on the day?I normally know what I can and can’t do so don’t spend too much time wor-rying about it to be honest. I just try and have fun with my run.

DUCT TAPETwo things that can � x almost anything - WD40 and duct tape. Well there are not many parts on a wakeboard that need oil but the other part of the tool box is more than handy for us. Dinging your board, breaking the zip on your bag, whatever it is that moves and shouldn’t - duct tape can help. If it doesn’t hold - just put more on, it will work. This is the King of tapes.
