FPGA BASED SIZE SORTING CONVEYOR BELT

ABSTRACT

This is an industrial automation based application. It shows the concept of a normal conveyor belt but with some intelligence, we can also call it as intelligent conveyor belt. It has the ability to sort the object of different sizes. Thus help to avoid size malfunctioning in production machines. In the core of the project we are using FPGA. The objects of different sizes are passed through the sensors. The object having the specified size is acceptable and other objects are rejected. The belt is driven by drive circuit which is controlled by drive controller. The FPGA device is used here as the drive controller.

DESCRIPTION

The various sections of the project are described below:

POWER SUPPLY: This circuit HAS +8V & +5V output at about 500mA current. The circuit utilizes the voltage regulator IC 7808 and 7805 for the constant power supply.

IR TRANSMITTER SECTION: The circuit presented here uses a simple principle of transmitting modulated IR rays. A square wave oscillator for modulation of IR rays is built around most common timer IC-555 used in a stable mode.

PHOTO INTERRUPTER DETECTER: It is IR based intruder system, which sense to object. This part has two-receiver section. Each section is sensed size of object and selects objects according to deferent size.

FPGA (FIELD PROGRAMMABLE GATE ARRAY): This section controls the relay and drives relay according to output of photo interrupter. IR rays in IR photodiode are used for detection. The FPGA used is PLC.

RELAY DRIVER: Its section controls the magnetic solenoid, which push to unusable size of object.

MECHANICAL ASSEMBLY OF THE TRIGGER: Trigger is electromagnetic device which push to unusable size of object with the help of its shaft. The solenoid is a long coil containing a large number of close turns of insulated copper wire. When an electric current is passed through the coils, it produces a magnetic field around it. The magnetic field produced by a current carrying coil is similar to the magnetic field produced by a bar magnet. The lines of magnetic force pass through the coil and return to the other end as shown in Figure. If a current-carrying coil is suspended freely, it comes to rest pointing north and south like a suspended magnetic needle. One end of the coil acts like a N-pole and the other end a S-pole. Since the current in each circular turn of the coil flows in the same direction, the magnetic field produced

by each turn of the coil adds up, giving a strong resultant magnetic field inside the coil. A coil is used for making electromagnets. Then in the centre of the coil there is a metallic rod, which is attracted by that magnetic field.

MECHANICAL ASSEMBLY CONVEYOR BELT: An assembly for transporting empty tubes and cops in a ring-spinning machine. The conveyor belts are driven for delivering empty tubes to and removing cops from the spindles, and the conveyor belts have openings formed therein at a mutual spacing approximately corresponding to half the given spindle spacing for securing arbors for alternating supporting empty tubes and cops.

COUNTER SECTION: This section counts usable and unusable tube or any objects.

WORKING OF THE PROJECT

This is an industrial automation based application. It is used to sort out the objects of different sizes. The sensors are used to select the object of specified size and reject the other objects. The FPGA device is used as the drive controller which controls the drive circuit. The mechanical assembly of conveyor belt is triggered by the mechanical trigger circuit whenever the object of specified size is sensed and it is allowed to pass away. While the other objects of size varied from specified size are rejected and thrown away. Thus the sorting of the objects is done depending upon their size.
