l.d Geographical location:

Syrian desert, which includes the following governorates: Deir Al Zor, Hassaka and Riqqa, along with Palmyra area, Qamishli area and Damascus rural desert

I.e Fields represented by the elements (other cultural aspects of falconry): In addition to practicing falconry which is mostly seasonal and when the hunting season draws to a close, falconers practice several professions (agricultural - industrial -commercial - handcrafts). One of the most famous handcrafts is everything related to hunting and taming falcons and making tents. Other people are fond of reading, horse riding, poetry recital and poetry soirees which give an account of hunting marvels.

Oral expressions: Local falcon nomenclatures: 1- Sakr bird: which includes birds known internationally as falcons, and it includes the following: Chick falcon: One year old Al Qernas: Above one year of age Female: Which is bigger than the male and known as sakr bird. Almathlouth: A male born smaller than the female. Alnakl: Also known as qareed alaysh, which is one of small male falcons.

2- Peregrine falcon: Which includes several types: Marine peregrine: 16 inch in size and known as kosya; Mountainous peregrine: smaller in size and known as mountainous; Dakhna peregrine: smaller in size than pigeons and known as dakhna.

Handcrafts: 1- Making falcon accessories: Burqa: A hat-shaped piece ofleather put on falcon' s head to conceal sight; Alsaboq: A silk thread or natural leather fastened to the bird's leg to hold it in place; Aldas or almanqala: A piece of leather or thick fabric put on hand while carrying the bird for training or hunting; Alqemat: A piece of cloth shaped as a coat to cover the bird while holding or travelling with it. Waqr: A place where the bird stands.

Nature related knowledge:

Falcons reproduce in high rising mountains and can be divided into two types: migratory and sedentary birds. Sedentary birds include peregrines which reproduce in the Levant over Palmyra range of mountains. Migratory falcons come from the North of the Earth (Northern Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and Asian Mountains). It hunts using immigration lines in Syria, Iraq, Egypt and Libya and part of it is exported to GCC countries. Falcons usually migrate between July and December from north to south. They move from cold to moderate places and then return to their habitat for hatching from March until June, and so on. The falcon is known to be migrating in isolation or with family members only, but they never migrate in flocks as it is the case in other birds.

2- Falconry: It is a practice passed on from ancestors. It dates back to ancient times of history in the Levant, especially in Syria. Some indications point that this practice is as old as Man. A falconry hut has been discovered in Alqaryatain area, Horns Governorate, carved out on a hilltop inundated with dust for more than 50 em. This certainly indicates the greatness of this practice.

Customs and traditions: Learning falconry from early childhood at the hands of fathers and grandfathers and recognizing hunting times and locations;

Falconry related practices: Hunting falcons is done in autumn every year from the first light of dawn until the last light of the season. Passing falcons are monitored every morning as falcons at that time are known to be hungry and can be easily caught up. Once the falcon is caught by the hunter, he begins to tame and train it and even gives it a name. He starts his training by staying up at night with little sleep and food until the falcon becomes familiar with the hunter and its new name. Training with a rope begins in the backyard for one week and then the hunter trains it without a rope outside the backyard for 15 days until the falcon becomes ready for hunting.

3- Effect of Falconry inscription in UNESCO:

The inscription of falconers' names in UNESCO will break the isolation of this practice as it will become part of the world heritage list. Falconers will gain more knowledge through their participation in local and international festivals and workshops, and this in tum will build up their culture and experience in the legal practice of this profession.

4.a Current and new efforts to safeguard falconry:

Clubs and societies: There are around twenty one private clubs.

Societies: The Ministry of Culture is currently working on establishing a private society for falconers. Government legislations: Government legislations are still inadequate and even complicated. Breeding programs: Private clubs are utilizing modest local efforts for falcon related medical care and supervising the treatment and breeding of flacons to keep them in good health conditions. These clubs organize special programs for kids and adults to be trained on hunting and taming.

4.b Future plans developed to protect falcons in Syria: The Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Cultural Center in Al Rahiba, is currently establishing a society for falconers in order to be able to report appropriate suggestions to the official authorities. This aims to develop this practice and preserve its heritage with the government's commitment to sign treaties related to falconers. There is no government, legal or financial support for this profession and therefore, falconers have their own customary legislations.
