Transmissions GearShift Knobs andvalves in US heavytruck market

From valve solutions to a new gearshift knob

In the early eighties work began on a new conceptin the use of slave valves. Working in closecooperation with the Volvo Truck Corporation ofSweden, a special slave valve was jointly developedfor use in vehicle transmission applications.Since then the Parker Pneumatic slave valve hasfound acceptance all the world over.

The slave valve features a unique 'all round' low temperature spooldesign, with no 'cross port' leakage. The viton seals in GPSO providea wide operating temperature range. The compact anodisedaluminium body is corrosion resistant with a stainless steel spool.The valves also feature a specially protected exhaust port.

When Volvo required a new gear shift knob, Parker Pneumatic wasthe natural choice. The pneumatic gear shift knob is a new design,featuring improved surface texture with enhanced safety functions

and greater resistance to vibration. The application is verydemanding requiring totally reliable performance, often withcontaminated air, wide temperature fluctuations and in a dusty andsalt laden environment.

Today Parker Pneumatic supplies Volvo Truck with gear shift knobs in three versions, Split/Range, Splitonly and Range only functions. Our commitment to support Volvo is total, with EDI and a 'just-in-time'delivery system to support all Volvo markets..

Parker Pneumatic can boast a long association withMack Trucks USA, supplying valves for various types of Gear ShiftKnobs developed for greater driver comfort and a more flexibledriving programme in their heavy trucks.

Working closely with Mack Trucks a new slave valve solution wasdeveloped, featuring a special sleeve with a combined g lide ringand dynamic O-ring assembly. This provided a wider temperaturerange, greater flexibility, longer operational life, fast actuation andvery high flow capacity.

The valve has an anodised aluminium body, built-insintered bronze air filter and stainless steel or anodised

aluminium spool.

ZF Driveline Technologyfor Trucks

Gear shift knobs andvalves for control of

high and low ratioson transmissions.To allow a more flexible driving programme in heavy trucks,there is now the possibility to increase the number of gears inthe transmission by splitting the ratios two or four times via arange or range/split function. To control this function it iscommon to use a pneumatic cylinder which is mounted in, oron, the transmission. The cylinder is actuated by a relay/slavevalve which is pilot operated from a pneumatic signal orelectrical switch in the gear shift knob.

The application places extreme demands on the valves such aswide temperature range, dusty and salty conditions and reliableoperation with contaminated air.

Parker Pneumatic has been supplying valves and gear shiftknobs to the world's leading manufacturers of heavy vehiclesfor over 25 years.

Working in close cooperation with RockwellInternational, Parker Pneumatic has developed aninnovative concept for gear control in transmissions.The latest version of the gear shift knob evenincludes the trucks cruise control!

ZF Friedrichshafen, Germany, supply truck manufacturerswith a wide variety of vehicle transmissions for use on light,mid-range and heavy truck applications. They also supplyspecial combinations for specific tasks such as tractor/trailercombo' trucks used for long distance operation, heavy andsmall transport vehicles and construction transport vehicles.

In close cooperation with ZF Parker has developed a uniqueconcept all round spool solution for use in slave valves.These slave valves are fitted directly into the transmissionsand are designed to operate in a dust and salt ladenenvironment, at high temperature and under considerablevibration.

Truck Axle Lifters

Van Raden Industries, Portland, USA chose a panelmounted valve from Parker Pneumatic for their 'FlexMaster LiftAxle'.

Depending upon individual needs, the addition of the'FlexMaster Lift Axle' can increase the allowable gross vehicleweight by 10,000 to 22,000 pounds. (4.5 to 10 tons).The VGD 15 series valve supplies air to the ride and lift bagsfrom a panel mounted control

FlexMaster's articulating design is suitable for heavy dutytransfer trailers, dump trucks and pups, roll-off and other overthe road vehicles.

The VGD 15 is a robust and compact valve, which providesexcellent flow characteristics, fast actuation and lowchangeover pressure. The valves also feature a speciallyprotected exhaust ports.

Windsor EDS B.V.Holland are specialist manufactures of dooropening systems for distribution vehicles.

Systems can be supplied for use in both normal temperature

and for freezer trucks. The doors on freezer trucks in particular,are frequently opened. Time savings on opening/closing, inorder to minimise temperature increase due to ingress of warmair is imperative.

For this application Parker supplies a pneumaticsystem consisting of a cylinder mounted on theceiling of the truck with a control box on the sideof the door.

The cylinder stroke length is approximately 3mand various versions can be supplied with ascraper ring for removing ice from the pistonrod.

Automation Coupling Systems

The operational demands of this application are verytough due to the extreme environmental conditions.VBG decided on Parker Pneumatic to developproducts for their coupler designs, because theydemanded the highest quality of manufacture from acompany with a first class technical knowledge ofRoad Transport applications

The automatic coupler in the illustration consists of twospecial low temperature valves and one safety lockingcylinder.

The market for 'Semitrailers' in Europe, USA and the Middle East is huge.Semitrailers account for more than 90% of the trailer market, compared totraditional truck coupling systems. These fifth wheel systems are now becomingmore standardised than traditional couplers. Consequently the demands fromcustomers call for products that will withstand all kinds of extremely arduousconditions.

Working with VBG Ltd.Parker Pneumatic has developed specialised pneumaticcylinders and valves to perform raising, lowering and locking functions on thecompany's Semitrailers. Fifth wheel systems consist of special low temperatureC20 series cylinders and VGD15 series valves. Customers for this type of systeminclude DAF/Leyland, ERF, Volvo Truck, Scania and RVI.

Parker Pneumatic's developmentwork in the Slave Valve market led tothe unique 'all round' spool design,with no 'cross port' leakage and dust

protected exhaust ports. Thesecompact valves offer a superbperformance across a widetemperature range. Manufacturedfrom light weight aluminium, thespool material is corrosion resistantstainless steel.

Pneumatic Fittings

Parker Pneumatic offers one of the most comprehensiveranges in the market. Included are, plastic 'push-in' type,nickel plated brass 'push-in' or compression fittings andalso a complete range in stainless steel.Available in a wide selection of metric sizes, suitable forvarious pressures or vibration requirements throughoutthe vehicle industry including braking systems.

Lagab is a leading manufacturer of systems forautomatic container handling on vehicles.

When picking up or leaving a container, the vehicle isusually reversed into place and positioned correctlyusing the vehicles raise/lower function. Lagab's long

guidance chassis makes the operation considerablyeasier and safer for the operator. This automaticcontainer system may be monitored either from withinthe vehicle cab or from a manual valve on the chassis.

Demands in this type of application are extremelyarduous with safety being the prime consideration.The environment can be dust and salt laden with widevariations in temperature. For these reasons the

cylinders are completelyanodised and feature lowtemperature seals andstainless steel piston rods.

Parker's experience in making

cylinders for this type ofapplications was the mainreason for Lagab's choice ofpneumatic supplier.

Container Locking System

Volvo Construction Equipment, market-leading supp lier of frame-steered dumpers,has supplied more than 22,000 dumpersworldwide. With load capacities of 20-40tons, the dumpers are designed for heavyduty at high speeds, in difficult terrain andunder severe weather conditions.

Reliability is of prime importance, and VolvoConstruction Equipment have chosencomponents from Parker Pneumatic forseveral functions. Parker's function blockscontrol engagement and disengagement ofthe longitudinal and axle differential locks, as

this reduces the number of connection pointsand thus reduces the risk of leakage. Modestoverall dimensions have also simplifiedinstallation.

A pressure regulator, with preset and fixedpressure range, ensures maintenance ofcorrect pressure in the retarder (the automaticexhaust brake) and in the machine'sdrop-box. Anti-reflection and ergonomicallypositioned manual valves in the cab controlthe differential locks and the high and lowratio gears.

Fast, reliable engagement ofthe differential locks andsix-wheel drive is an essentialperformance requirement for Volvo'sA40 dumpers. Parker's function blockshave simplified installation and reducedthe risk of leakage.
