Moorsfrom P2decrease of age at marriage and increase ofremarriage rate is one reason behind theincrease of fertility in all ethnicities. There are few more reasons behind theincrease of fertility. Sri Lanka has become theleader of Asia in demographic achievementsand also the first country in South Asia to reach(1994) the replacement fertility. Sri Lanka is thefirst country in South Asia to reach belowreplacement fertility, he said.Annually between 150,000 to 225,000abortions take place in Sri Lanka while only 30Sri Lankan women in every 100 are employedin the formal sector. Teenage pregnancies isone of the burning issues in Sri Lanka at themoment. The teen fertility has been increasingrapidly during the past 10 to 15 years. The ageat marriage has gone down drastically. TheTFR in Sri Lanka is 2.42 by 2012 and the TFRof some countries such as Nepal (2.4),Maldives (2.3), Bhutan (2.3), India (2.5) in the

region is similar to SriLanka, he added.

This is mainly because the UNP is

supposed to have made a decision to field only twoMuslim candidates in predominantly Muslimdominated areas. Sir, you are well aware, theMuslim representation has been higher in thedistricts ofKandy, Colombo in previous governments. We areconcerned that independent groups may comeforward from the Muslim community and the Muslimvote could get further fragmented, thereby reducingthe chances of even two members being electedfrom these districts,” the Muslim Council added.

JHUfrom P12those who had exercised their franchise for MaithripalaSirisena expected of the party. Instead of taking swift and farreaching decisions required to re-direct the country towards anew path, the UNP bungled. "The alleged Central Bank bondscam is a case in point"; Warnasinghe said, blaming the UNPfor sabotaging the 20 Amendment to the Constitution. The 20Amendment was meant to bring in far reaching electoralreforms soon after the passage of the 19 Amendment to theConstitution, he said. Unfortunately, the two major politicalparties pursued strategies inimical to the overall well being ofthe country at the expense of crucial constitutional andelectoral reforms, the JHU spokesperson said.Responding to a query, Warnasinghe alleged that the 10-member Constitutional Council as envisaged in the 19Amendment couldn’t be established due to intransigence ofthe UNP and the SLFP.Asked whether JHU General Secretary and Power andEnergy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka would quit hisministerial portfolio in Prime Minister Wickremesinghe’scaretaker government, Warnasinghe said that hadn’t beendiscussed ye but our position would be made public soon. The JHU alleged that some of those who had thrown theirweight behind Maithripala Sirisena at the January 8 electionweren’t capable of taking tangible measures. "Their actionsare restricted to rhetoric," Warnasinghe said. Asked whetherhe was referring to the JVP, Warnasinghe said: "You canreach a conclusion on the basis of post-January 8 poll conductof political parties."The JHU said that the government had bungled anti-corruption investigations much to the anger anddisappointment of those who had risked their lives to bringdown the powerful Rajapaksa government.

against DEW(ft.lk) At the UNP’s Sirik-otha Headquartersyesterday, the Prime Minister allowedreporters to observe a briefing he hadrequested from party members who also saton COPE – MPs Sujeewa Senasinghe, EranWickramaratne and Rosy Senanayake. The MPs told the Premier at the briefing thatthe ‘report’ being circulated by Gunesekerawas a document summarising nearly 400pages of evidence gathered during the COPEprobe of the Central Bank bond scandal.Three drafts of the same document had beencirculated among COPE members onThursday 25 June, one day before Parliamentwas dissolved, Senasinghe told the PrimeMinister.UNP members in the Committee hadchallenged some sections of the document, but Gunesekera had been unyielding insistingthat the report be tabled in Parliament, eventhough there was no agreement, Senasingheclaimed. He added that COPE sub committees couldnot report to Parliament but only to the maincommittee, which was empowered to put factsbefore the Members of the House.Senasinghe said he was planning to takelegal action against the former COPEChairman about his violation of proceedingsand partisan conduct.Former MP Wickramaratne told the PrimeMinister that several members of COPE hadbeen absent at Friday’s meetings and nevereven saw the three drafts the Chairman hadput forward.“In an investigation like this, there cannot bean interim report, because this is one issuewe are going into and you can only issue aninterim report based on completed facts,” theformer banker told the Premier.

Nestled in the tranquil surroundings ofRajagiriya, ClearpointResidences is slated to be Sri Lanka’s firstsustainable high-riseand also the tallest residentialvertical garden in the world.A brainchild of renownedarchitect Milroy Perera,Clearpoint Residences is a jointventure between Milroy PereraAssociates and constructiongiant Maga Engineering. Bothentities are well versed in thenuances of architecture andconstruction and their expertisehas paved the way to create aone-ofa- kind design that iscutting-edge andsustainable. The residentialapartment towerconsists of 171apartmentscomprising 2, 3, 4bedroomapartments, a limitednumber ofpenthouses andpresidential suitesspread across 46floors. One of itsmany highlights willbe the plantedterraces encircling the building. The plants will bemaintained through a specially designedautomated drip

irrigation system, through recycled water. Theidea of incorporating such a system is toensure that the residents do not have to beinvolved in the management of the garden.“We are looking at Clearpoint Residencesfrom a sustainable point of view,” explainedArosha Perera, Project Architect.“Before starting the project we looked atdifferent options in terms of what we can doto make an apartment more sustainable. Wehave included several aspects that are simplesuch as the elongated balconies with plants. It may look like an aesthetic decision to makethe building look cooler, but in fact it is apragmatic one to limit the amount of sunlightstreaming in. The idea is that the plants canbe used as a green shield, so that theapartment doesn't heat up, in turn drastically

reducing the air conditioning costs.”Not stopping there, several features, all aimed at

making ClearpointResidencessustainable havebeen incorporatedinto the design. Forinstance, solarpanels integrated tothe roof terrace, willbe utilised to powerpublic utilities andcommon areas suchas the elevators, andlobby lights. Rainwater along withrecycled grey waterwill be collected tobe used inbathrooms forflushing and for plantirrigation while acentral gas systemwill be in place forheating water. Aspecial system willbe put in place tomanage solid wastewhere garbage is tobe separated andsold to relevantsources. The money

thus earned will be used to maintain the building, cutting down the costs of maintenance.Elaborating further Archt. Arosha Perera said, “We

are glad that we are able to carry out theseinitiatives without adding extra cost to theselling price of this apartment while givingclients better options. In most instanceswhen you buy an apartment, your money islocked into paying maintenance and utilitycosts. As such, we are including allthese aspects to make the buildingenvironmentally friendly while keeping itaffordable for the occupants.”There are four elevators in the building andan intelligent sensor system has been put inplace to direct residents towards the elevatorthat will take them faster to their residence,

saving time. Two parking slots have beenallocated for each apartment, which sitsunder a landscaped garden that acts as amulti-court for basketball, tennis, badmintonand other sports. The apartment complexalso includes an entertainment area, overlooking the garden along with all otheramenities needed for comfortableliving.Yet another key feature is that the size of thesmallest apartment unit (2 bedroom) is 1,800sq ft while the average apartment unit (3bedroom) is 2,300 sq ft. Furthermore, thearchitect and developer together are able toallow the residents to customize each

I am pleased to forward this message for thesouvenir commemorating the 27th Anniversary ofthe Festival of Cricket.Cricket has become almost a lifestyle of the SriLankan people, one and a half centuries after theBritish introduced the sport to us. Today, it hasundoubtedly become the most influential game inthe country and the de-facto national sport. Furtherit has become a unifying force in the country,

transcending all boundaries.I understand that part of the excess proceedings ofthis event will be utilised to develop 31 schools ofthe teams who are taking part today. Message from Charity Chairman FoC 2015The Charity Raffle is an integral part of the Festivalof Cricket, and participation in it is as important asthe Cricket and Hospitality events taking place onthe day. It delivers a “humane thought” of helpingpeople less fortunate than ourselves amongst allthe frivolities that are going on. It is therefore withmuch gratitude that I thank the support of all the 31OBAs of the FOC in trying to sell as many ticketsas possible. As reiterated in the past, the funds weraise do not depend on the profits we make from

the Festival, but only from the sale of our raffletickets. This year all the funds raised from the rafflein total will go towards institutions dealing inCancer Research in UK and Sri Lanka extending aspecial contribution to the Anthony Nolan Fund. Also, I, categorically state that no expenses havebeen incurred in the running of the raffle and in thisaspect I must thank Mass Global Shipping forsponsoring the cost of printing tickets andSrilankan Airlines for their magnanimous support in

offering the main prizes of Return Air tickets to SriLanka. I also thank those who have offered thePrizes which are as important in makingthis Raffle a success. Above all mysincere thanks to all of you who havepurchased tickets and those who willpurchase more on the day. Finally thanksto my Assistants at the FOC whose helpwas imperative. GOOD LUCK

Ven. Galagama Attadassi Mahanayake Thera Conferred Title of Chief Prelate of Asgiriya Chapter

New epoch for Asgiriya Chapter

(dailynews.lk) North from the lake is situated theAsgiri Maha Viharaya, the other monastic centreof the Siyam Nikaya. This temple is believed tobe considerably older ‘than the Malwatu Viharayaand the “Asgiriya Talpata” voices this claim.Asgiri Maha Viharaya was founded byCommander Siriwardhana at the inquest ofParakramabahu IV of Kurunegala (1305-1335A.D.). The original buildings were set up in theTrinity College premises. The bhikkhus to take upresidence here was sent from Valasgalahermitage in Yapahuva. The name Valasgala istranslated into Pali as “Acchagiri” and the presentSinhalese name Asgiri is derived from it.According to another legend Asgiri was namedafter the mother queen of Vikramabahu who wascremated in the present cremation ground orAdahana Maluva at Asgiriya. It is said that she built a temple called“Talagahamulla Viharaya” which later became the“Asgiri Viharaya”. At present the Asgiri TempleComplex is called “Heyagiri Wijesundararama”.Heyagiri is a erroneously translation in toSinhalese the pali word Acchagiri. During the lastking of Kandy, His Commander-in-Chief

Urulewatte Wijesundara Rajakaruna Seneviratnebuilt a new temple near the old one and thewhole temple complex became to known as“Heyagiri Wijesundararama”.The King also made land grants to the templeand an inscription by him to this effect is still seennearby. But the popular name Asgiriya continuedto be used. During the reign of Rajadhi Rajasinha(1779-1797 A.D.) the streets of Kandy werestraightened and as a result the oldbuildings of the Viharaya had to bedemolished and a new temple wasbuilt at “Udamadapota”. This is nowknown as” Pahala Pansala “or lowertemple. The demolition for thesecond time took place during thereign of Vimaladharmasuriya II(1687 – 1707) when he was buildinga wall round the city.It is seen from the history of theAsgiri Viharaya that almost all therulers of the Kandyan Kingdom havecontributed much towards itsdevelopment. On the other hand, itwas mainly the monks of this

Chapter who have safeguarded the Tooth Relicon behalf of the ruling monarch duringtroublesome times.Again, it was Wariyapola Sumangala AnunayakeThero of the Vihara who re-hoisted the Sinhaleseflag in protest when the British hoisted their flagat the time of the signing of the KandyanConvention in 1815.

Asgiriyafrom P24Among the historical monuments belonging to theAsgiriya Vihare are the “Purana Viharaya” or the

Old Temple and the “Aluth Viharaya” or the NewTemple which was built by Pilimathalawe Dissawein 1768. The temple known today as “MedaPansala” was built by Meegastanne Dissawe inDumbara in 1767.

Parana Viharaya contains a sedate figure ifBuddha under a Makara Thorana Arch, andthe interior is very similar to that of GedigeViharaya. The figures on each side of Buddhaare the deity Natha on his right and deitySaman on his left. A new “Aluth Vihare” wasbuilt by the Pilimathalawe Adhikaram, a son ofthe Pilimathalawe Dissawe in 1801. Thisviharaya has a recumbent figure of Buddhahewn out of Rock thirty six feet long. Asgiriyaalso has two poya-ges.One of the most important monumentsstanding in the Maha Vihara Grounds is the“Gedige Viharaya” in the “Adahana Maluwa”or the Royal Cremation Ground. According tothe legend this viharaya was found byVickramabahu (Senasammatha?) in memoryof queen Chandrawathie who was crematedhere. A beautifulgedige style image shrineand a monastery constituted this viharaya andwas known as “Rathnabanu”. The viharayahad three maluwas or terraces, Uda (upper)maluwa, Meda (centre) Maluwa, Palle (lower)Maluwa. The cremation of the Royal familymembers was at the Meda Maluwa, thereforethe temple in the premises was known as the“Adahana Maluwa Gedige Viharaya”.Historically, Adahana Maluva Gedige is thesecond oldest monument in the city andarchitecturally it belongs to the same schoolthat influenced the monuments at NathaDevale and Gadaladeniya Vihara in Uda

Nuwara. It is believed that the plan of the NathaDevala Gedige has been made use of here.Adahanamaluve Gedige Viharaya plays asignificant role in the Kandy Esala Peraharain thatin final night the Relic Casket of the DaladaMaligava is deposited there until thecommencement of the last day Perahara whichbegins from this site. This is done in order to fulfila wish of King Kirti Sri Rajasinhe (1747 – 1781),who, having re-started the Dalada Perahara, ordered that the Casket be deposited atAdahana Maluva as a mark of respect to hisqueen mother cremated there.Adahana Maluva was the place where thedead bodies of the kings of Kandy wereburned and their remains were buried.Valentyn says that the body ofVimaladharmasuriya I (1592 – 1604), whodied in 1604 was “cremated according to thecustom of his country in a princely arbour”.Maha Astana, the son of VimaladharmasuriyaI, and Dona Catherina who died in 1612 wasalso cremated there with “very great state androyalty, while great mourning lamentation weretaking place at the sepulcher”. He also speaksof Dona Catherina who died in July 20, 1613.“She was cremated on the 21st with greatsplendour on the same spot where the funeralof her son had been celebrated”.In 1878-80 the railway line to Matale wasconstructed under the Adahana Maluva in atunnel and the last of the tombs which wasalmost the only remains of the Royal burialground was destroyed.Among the historical monuments in the city ofKandy are three other important temples

belonging to the late Kandyan period. They areGangaramaya, Huduhumpola and Nittawela. These stood outside the boundaries of the oldcity but today they are within the municipal limitsbecause of their close proximity to the ancientcity.- Central Cultural Fund

MahelaCONT FROM P30... but when it mattered most, the final foursessions of the Test, they let it slip, promptingmany to wonder if the result would have beendifferent had the two been around. In this lengthy chat with Wisden India,Jayawardene speaks about his dear friend, thefuture of Sri Lankan cricket, the Caribbean PremierLeague and more. Excerpts:Now that Kumar Sangakkara has also announcedhis retirement, how do you think Sri Lankan cricketwill cope with your twin absences? We have had quite a few discussions (regardingSangakkara’s retirement). We have spoken aboutthis for the past one year, from around the time Iretired, but Sri Lankan Cricket convinced him toplay a bit longer so he changed his stand. He isfantastic. If you ask Kumar, he would say I am thebest but if you look at his numbers, it’s quite clearwho was. Kumar’s numbers are phenomenal andhe has stamped his legacy. He is someone everyyoungster should learn from. He has handledhimself very well on and off the field. He issomeone who has given a lot to Sri Lankan cricketand I am very proud to have played with him. It’sgoing to be a tremendous loss for Sri Lankancricket, but like all teams, Sri Lanka will also gothrough a transition period. I hope the young sidecan learn from some of the things that we havetaught them and take Sri Lankan cricket in the rightdirection. That’s our only hope.Do you think once Sangakkara leaves, the legacythat you and he built over the years will begin towane? You’ll have to wait and see. We tried tochange the culture in the team over the last tenyears and we have managed well. It also dependson the next generation and if they want to stay thepath or follow a new direction. But I think once heleaves, our signature in the side will cease to existand I don’t think many will take our approachforward. Younger guys have a very different viewand different ways of going about things and theyshould be allowed to pursue their own path. It willbe interesting to see how things pan out. We had agreat run for over 15 years and no one can stayforever but we are proud that we have giveneverything we had for the country.Experience is something the Sri Lankan side lacksright now, and it was evident in their loss toPakistan. Will that become more and more of aproblem during this transition?I don’t know. I didn’t watch too much of the matchbut I know that Pakistan have much moreexperience. Obviously, Younis Khan’s knock in thefourth innings showed that. I know the boys willlearn from this experience and you will see a muchbetter performance the next time. I’m sure they willhave a chat about it and see what positives theycan take away from it. I thought everyone foughtvery well, especially the bowlers did a great job forSri Lanka. We just need to fine tune a bit… so Ijust think Sri Lankan cricket needs to be supportedduring this period.

Switching over to the CPL now. Is your form a bitof concern? You have made just 13 runs fromthree innings…Not really. See, I walk into situations where I haveto tee off from the start. I don’t obviously open theinnings, so it has been different for me to adapt tothis new role. Thankfully, Chris (Gayle) has been ingreat form and he has finished off games for us(Jamaica Tallawahs). It’s just the start of thetournament and we have had a couple of toughgames. We were outplayed in the last game butwe were apart from that we have had a goodtime. I am looking forward to the home run, wehave four games and hopefully I can get someruns. Home games are going to be crucial forus. It’s a great tournament and verycompetitive. Talent is brilliant and everyone isenjoying it. I am looking forward to the nextcouple of weeks. What is your take on the CPL? What sort of animpact do tournaments like these have onyoungsters as well as seniors? It’s great. It’ssomething for us to challenge ourselves in adifferent way. I think Indian cricket has come along way in international cricket because of theIPL where young players share dressing roomswith seniors from all over the world. Allcountries are benefiting from that exchange.West Indies is trying to do the same thing andthey are doing a great job with that. It’s verycompetitive and there’s a lot of quality. Youngtalent in West Indies is going to learn a lot fromthis. It’s good for us (seniors) too. It’s nice toget away from international cricket. It’scompetitive but it’s very entertaining as well sowe are very relaxed and it’s brilliant. It’s fun tobe here and I am really enjoying my crickethere.Do you see a similarity in the way the game isapproached in the West Indies and in SriLanka, not just by the players but also thefans? No. Of course, there are a lot of similarities inthe way the SriLankans and the WestIndians approach theircricket. They have anattacking brand ofcricket that they haveadopted from the 80sand the 90s. There is alot of raw talent and Ithink we share acommonality in that. But the difference isthey have a hugepower game. Wecannot compare that tothe Sri Lankan way(laughs), but the flairand lot of the otheraspects of their gamecan be compared tothem. The importantthing is that theenvironment is very

similar to the environment in Sri Lanka. Cricket isan occasion in both the places and players love itwhen the crowds get behind them.Talking about attacking cricket, has T20 cricket putlesser value on wickets in Test cricket? No. If you can score 350-400 in a day even if itmeans losing a few wickets, you put yourself in aposition from where you can win a Test match. Ithink if you can get results, then that meansbetterment of Test cricket.

Meanwhile, the BCCI

is planning to advance the tour.“At present the tour is due to start around August11 but we want it to be advanced by a week as theteam would have returned from Zimbabwe by July20. We are working out the modalities and theprogramme will be out in 2-3 days. We are keenthat the team return from Lanka by September 2or so, so that they have a complete break of onemonth before the home series against South Africain October-November,” a BCCI source said.September, however, could see the alternativetournament to the T20 Champions League, asplanned by BCCI, taking place but no details haveemerged thus far on this front. The Test series would be India’s first in Sri Lankaafter five years. India drew 1-1 in the previousrubber between the two teams held in the EmeraldIsle in August, 2010.After returning home from Lanka, India awaitSouth Africa for a full series of Tests, ODIs andT20Is.South Africa will play four Test matches(Ahmedabad, Delhi, Nagpur and Bengaluru), fiveone-day internationals (Chennai, Kanpur, MP,Rajkot and Mumbai) and three T20s (Kolkata,Mohali, Dharamshala).

(colombogazette.com) Sri Lanka’s fast-bowlingcoach Champaka Ramanayake has said that 23-year-old Dushmantha Chameera is the mostexciting fast-bowling find he had come acrosssince Lasith Malinga.Ramanayake, a former Sri Lanka seamer with 18Test caps, was responsible for the emergence ofMalinga, and hebelieves Chameera hasthe same raw materialin him.“Chameera is theequivalent of Malinga atthe start of his career, pace wise, but not skillwise which he has todevelop,” Ramanayakesaid. “Malinga bowledwith a lot of confidenceand had raw pace andhe had an unusualbowling action.“Chameera has got pace which was lacking in ourbowling line-up. It is good to have a bowler whocan hit speeds of nearly 150 kmph consistently inyour team. He has to work on his skill levels andhe needs strengthening for sustainability.”Chameera went off the field for treatment in hissecond over during Pakistan’s second innings inColombo, but returned afterwards to bowl with alot of pace and picked up three wickets. Heunsettled the Pakistani batsmen and broke thewrist of Wahab Riaz, who was subsequently ruledout of the Test series.“I am very proud of his attitude that even with aside strain he continued to bowl. Pain issomething every fast bowler has to carry withthem throughout their careers,” Ramanayakesaid.Ramanayake said that he got to know Chameerabetter when he was working with the Sri Lanka Ateam during the home series against Pakistan A.“Working with the A team, there is a lot of time tocondition the bowlers better. Chameera alongwith the other fast bowlers underwent similartraining as the seniors. It was enjoyable workingwith the youngsters.”Ramanayake said the arrival of Michael Main, thenew trainer from England, was helping thebowlers get fitter and stronger. “Conditioning isvery important. We are doing a special programon fitness and strengthening for all our fastbowlers, it’s a six-month course,” Ramanayakesaid. “With the climate and weather we have hereit’s tough on the fast bowlers, you can’t bowl them

in long spells. Sri Lanka must be the toughestplace in the world for fast bowlers. Unlike incountries like England, New Zealand and Australiawhere the conditions and pitches are suitable forfast bowling, it’s a challenge in Asian countries.”Dhammika Prasad, who was named Man of theMatch for his seven wickets in Sri Lanka’s win

against Pakistan in thesecond Test, hasovercome fitness andinjury problems whichhad held back hisprogress in the past.Ramanayake said thatPrasad’s role in thesenior team was to giveconfidence to thebowlers and work ontheir mental side.“Dhammika had abowling fitness issue

and when he was in the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team lastyear we treated him as a special case. Weconditioned him and he was asked to bowl spellsfor a day as in a match situation. It’s a mental thingas well. Bowlers can have a bad spell or a bad daybut unlike batsmen they can always come back.”(Courtesy ESPN Cricinfo)

Mahelafrom P30You see batsmen going hard at the top ordernowadays and it’s very exciting. They find thatattack is the best option rather than beingnegative and getting bogged down. I think it’sabout having the right balance. Test cricket willbenefit not only because of T20 but alsobecause of the mindset of these players.Nowadays, batsmen are much more confidentplaying their shots. They can use what theylearn in T20s in Tests but they should find abalance and be able to execute it regularly.Your Ashes prediction? It’s going to be tough to predict, but I thinkAustralia have a better overall package.England is going in as the underdog eventhough they are playing at home because theyare an inexperienced Ashes outfit. Australiahave all bases covered. Having said that, this isa funny game… If England have a great start, then they might just be able to pull somethingoff. Should Australia do what they have done inTest cricket for a while now, I think they aregoing to win this. Also, I think the Ashes hasbeen a great advertisement for Test cricket forthe past decade or so. It is the focal point in Testcricket. This time it has built up as well, so I amlooking forward to it.Source: Wisden India

(nation.lk) St. Peter’s College produced asensationally smashing show in the annals of theschools sporting history as their tennis playersbagged the under-19 all-island title last week at theSri Lanka Tennis Association Tennis court inColombo following the success of the under-15and under-17 teams which also won the titles. The success of the school’s tennis was just thetonic that the Peterites would have wanted at atime their rugby team produced a disappointingshow in the concluded League season and gavetheir fans very little to cheer. The Peterites in the process completed the typicalGrand Slam in tennis by winning all three agegroups as well as the All Island Overall Schoolstennis Championship for the third consecutive yearand the ninth time over the past 11 years. It was also the first time that any school had wonall three competitive age groups since it wasintroduced by the Ministry of Education. ThePeterite show had even outshone the days sincethe early 1990s when Royal College were kings intennis and dominated the arena. But unlike Royal, the Peterite dominance came ata time more schools contest the title by investingheavily. By creating unparalled history the Peteriteshave raised the bar and taken schools tennis to ahigher level which makes them the team to beat in

the future. The Peterites signaled their entry when theirnumber one player Chehan Fernando defeatedAnanda’s top exponent Akila Vimukthi to take a 23-12 win over the Anandians. When the two heavyweights Royal and St. Peter’slocked horns, Chehan Fernando blasted outopponent B Suren who beat him at a recent Otterstournament as the Peterites won 23-12.The Trinitians and the Benedictines merely fell bythe wayside. In the semi finals the Peterites took on the strongColombo International School (CIS) team and withskipper Davishka Ranasinghe defying medicalprescription over an illness they triumphed theirway into the final.Shanitha Perera and U Dilshanth pulled off aremarkable win in the deciding doubles 6/3, 6/0.In the other semi final Royal beat S. Thomas’ 3-2to book a date with the Peterites.Overcoming illness to Ranasinghe, Nabeel Sabriand Shanitha Perera along with a back injury onChehan Fernando, the Peterites were determinedto go the distance.Chehan Fernando beat Royal captain VikumJayasuriya 6-3, 6/3 while Davishka Ranasinghewith Nabeel Sabri won the first doubles 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 as the Peterites went two up.

The Royalists hit back with Tharin Munasinghepulling a match back for his team and then NadilSilva equalled it all by beating R Krishanthan 6/1,6/3 to make it 2/2.In the decider the Peterite pair of Dilshanth andShanitha threw in everything to subdue Royal’sdetermined duo of B.Suren and S. Kuganeshwho dominated thecontest at the start andthreatened to run awaywith the match. It was Shanitha whocame up with aremarkable ace to breaka 30-30 deadlock asDilshanth intercepted areturn to put away awinner while the Peteritecrowd went into tearfulcelebrations to mark thehistory-makingoccasion.Peterite sportscoordinator Rev FrSharm Dasanayakeattributed the triumph tocomplete dedication and

which everyone present at the championshipenjoyed. The champion Rajans team coached by SamanWeerasinghe comprised of some top fighters likeKalana Tennakoon, Jeewaka Weerasinghe, A.Alahakoon and Pasindu de Silva.Trinity College teams too did well and put up agood show, and were able to take second place.

S M Jeffrey Abdeen - Kandy SportsCorrespondent( ) Vijaya College, Matale and NalandaCollege, Colombo emerged joint champions at theall island schools boys under 17 hockeychampionship organised by the Sri Lanka SchoolHockey Association and the Matale SchoolHockey Association when the find, ended in anexciting scoreless draw at Edward Park Matale. Both team appeared to the tired when the finalsbegan as this was their third match for the day. They played the quarter finals in the morning andlater the semi finals, followed by the finals.Thirty two teams participated in this tournamentand the main problem of the organiser was a lackof another venue which resulted in matches beingnot worked off to schedule. The Bernard Aluvihare Stadium with barrenpatches at certain places was not the best ofvenues at this hockey tours. It is quite large andwas divided into two courts and two matches wereplayed simultaneously. This was not an issue theother venue was Edward Park. The best of all venues Nandimithra EkanayakeInternational Hockey Stadium with its excellentinfrastructure and facilities cannot be used as theastro tarf wheel is over 12 years old needsreplacement. Some of the matches were alsoplayed at a ground owned by Sirimavo

Bandaranaike Vidyalaya close to the hockeystadium. The finals produced good hockey though theplayers were a little slow on the field. They did wellto defend their territory especially in the shootingrange to thwart their opponents from scoring. Before the commencement of the match the twoteam, were introduced to the chief guest andformer National Hockey coach A J M Farook andthe Present President of the Sri Lanka SchoolHockey Association Mrs ChandrakanthiKarunanayake and others.Roshan Hemantha and S N Jayasinghe umpiredJoseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa scoredstunning 4-1 on penalty strokes over St ThomasCollege, Matale to win the consolation finals, atthe Bernard Aluwihare Stadium. It was quite on plucky performance by theWennappuwa whose hockey is on the rise as theylast became joint champions with Christ ChurchCollege at the all island schools under 19tournament at Matale. The ability for the Joseph Vazians to give a goodflight to Matale schools in Matale is a good sign ofprogress. In the semi final Vijaya College got the better of StThomas College Matale 1-0 and Nalanda Collegebeat Joseph Vaz College 3-2 on penalty strokesafter the match ended in a scoreless draw.

But it will still be an excitingchoice to make, and I hope to have the strengthto make the right choices."Not politics for sure - I am someone who likes totalk about it rather than do something about it.""Cricket-wise, in SriLanka, everyone is prettykeen to give somethingback and however youdecide to give that back"coaching, administrationor doing a little bithowever you can â€" Iwill always be available.Timely decision"Could I go intocommentary? I don'tknow, but it's important tosit down and take stockand when you do make adecision, you make it forthe right reasons."Sri Lankan cricket is at acrossroads right now"where the interimcommittee has beencharged with changingthe nature andadministration of thestructure of first classcricket, and to turn into asustainable and moretransparent andaccountable model. "Ithink it's such animportant task and sucha vital one that I wishthem all the best. If thereis anything I can do tohelp, I am available and Ihope we can take SriLanka onto a new path.""He will bring a lot ofhonesty, stability and

good old fashioned hard work" and he is awonderful human being."He is good, he is honest and he is simple. Hegives it everything and he is also a very goodman manager so England could not have askedfor a better coach."I am excited for Trevor and he will do a great job

with England as long as theplayers let him in and leaveroom for what Trevor has tooffer.""The advantage is withAustralia, it's an Ashes forthem to lose."But looking at the qualityEngland have, I think theAshes will be closer than

most would think, and they will give Australia astrong run for their money."The Australians are a wonderfully strong groupand led by a wonderful leader, not just a captainin Michael Clarke, but over the last two or threeyears we have seen a transformation that's beenamazing he has grown as an individual and as acricketer so he will have a huge impact on theseries."They will come out all guns blazing and play afantastic brand of cricket and England will also dothe same. Everyone will hope for a great contestand I think it will be one."(BBC)
