DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

The Talhot County Women's Club hns its headquarters in n fine, frel:'standinri Fecleral period structure, one of Easton's best preserved buildinqs. The old dwelling is located east and south of thP 'rnlbot Cnunty Court House in n residential neighborhood which developed in thP mid to late nineteenth century.

The earliest portions of thP house i11; situated very nen.r t1'e street. The three bay two-and-a-half story brick portion appears to be the earlier. Se~ to the south side, forwnrd of the brick buildinn is a one-nn~-A-half storv frarn"' winri covered h• n steep gable roof. LatPr winos of frame have been constructed at the rear.

The brick main house i~ plain, even aust('re, but beautifully d~tniled. The Flemish bond brick facnd~ i.s of perfectly formed liaht ornngc brick. The mortar ioints are narrow.

Window openings, except in the basement are lim:ited to th~ front and rear facades and there they are evenly spaced on both floors. Early nine over six sashes have survived ns hnve the narrow beado~ window frnlll('!Q. Shutters with wide louvers are usod. 'l'hE'! main entrance in the southern bnv retains its original paneled jamb n.nd transom light. The architrave and pilastPrs, hnwPV""r, were installerl in l 9lt5 a"fter a design by Roy Robinson, n Wilmin~ton, Delaware architect. At that time, a one bay entrance porch with a crossed stick hnlustrade was remov£><i; th<.> porch appeared to date from late in the ninetP.Pnth century.

Typical of Federal period huildings, the house has no belt cour~P or water table. Ornamental features are restricted to the cornice, which is of the box type with very simple crown and bed moldings, nnd rubbed brick flat arches above window op~ning~. There is nl~o a straight sirled exterior chimney rising against the north wall; iti;; uppe.r portion has been rebuilt . Gnhles hnvP beaded anrl tapert"d verge boards.

'!.'he basement is unusually interestinn. Entered hy a cellar door at the rear of the building, there is a basement fireplace of medium size. Windows on all foHr exterior brick walls once lit ~ the hasement. Their beaded frames nnd wooden grilles ar~ still in place.

Two gable dormers pierce the western roof slope; they have six over six wi.ndow sashc~ and openings flankei:1 with flnt, unmolded pilasters. The roof is finished with a cornice and return.

The position of the frame wing is unusual and probably was chosen to allow spnce for a window in the north wnll near the main entrance. The wing is three bavs wide with twelve over11rtinr. snsh windows whoa,,. frames are bended and edged with a quarter round backbond molaing. Th~ cornice is o~ the box type, but quite shallow with quirked flattened cnown and bed moldings.

Like the main house dormers nre of the gable type with cornice and return and flat pilasters. Basement windows nre beaded and enclo8ed with a wooden qrille. ThiA wing alAo hns at1 exterior brick chimney at the center of the south wall. The wing was originally sheathed with beaded sidinq, now covered with aluminum.

To the rear of the structure are two frnme wings to back, one h~hino the old frame wing and one behind

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

A representative of Easton•s outstanding Federal period, the Talbot County Wot'len's Club building is significant for its architecture and it!' fine detailing. lts brick work i.n among the town's best, indeed the building is one oC Easton's best preserved early structures. The plncem0 nt of the major fran~ wing is unusual; however, thP original form wa~ probablv typicnl of early buildings - main block with rear ell.

The Talbot County Womens Club acquired their present Club House in 191t6 from Norn w. White for Sl1000. oo. Shr. wni:; one of the heirs of William T. Wright. Mr. Wri.qht had bought the house nnd adjoining lots "from MO¥decai Dawson and his wife Deborah in 1891. During this time he sold the adioining lots so that the Womens Club property is now reduced to the lot nnd house feeing on Talbot Lnne. Dawson had bought three lots f"rom Joseph R. Price for stax>o.oo •

• James Price was the bni lder of this hom=1e. He bought this and other lots in 1~92 for b 100 •• ~arto chose this land on which to build his home. • Ja~s Price was Register of Wills until 18~3 and serven in other municipal office~ as wi;ill. His wns the atrrngth o'f integrity that gave such chnracter to the beQinnings of Enston tO\m.

This is a rather attractive brick colonial house with a steeply pitched A-roof. It is three bays wide and 2 bays deep. The door is on the right with an overlight. All of the windows are 9/6. They all have flat arches of stretchers and flat wooden siJLs. There are 2 6/6 peaked dormers on the roof. The left wall is solid brick with no windows. The unusual feature is that the brick chimney on this end of the house is an exterior one. It is a large solid brick chimney built againt the wall.

'.ro the right and slightly to the front of this brick house is a oni~ and a half storey beaded clapboard structure 3 bays wide and 2 bays deep. This wing has 9/6 windows and two 6/6 dormers on the roof. There is an exterior brick chimney on the right end of this house which is set against a square panel of brick set in the wall.

'.rhis house, both the brick and frame parts, is a very attractive one. It is very plain, almost severe, in its lack of decoration and has a very formal dignified quality.
