On November 3rd, 2018, the Cary High School NJROTC Drill Team participated in a sanctioned Drill, Academics, and Athletics Meet at Southeast Guilford High School. In Personnel Inspection the cadets placed 4th and the Academics Team which was led by Cadet Aydan Gibbs placed 2nd. Unarmed Regulation was lead by Cadet Miller Harris and received 2nd Place, and Unarmed Exhibition was lead by Cadet Joey Cruz and received 3rd Place. Armed Exhibition was lead by Cadet Joey Cruz and received 2nd Place, and Armed Regulation was lead by Cadet Laura Piccione and received 5th Place. The Athletics Team which was led by Cadet Shane Conley received 2nd Place in the 16x200 run and 5th Place in the 16x100 run. They also received 4th Place in both the push-ups and sit-ups portion of the meet. Cadet Donavin Davis won 1st Place in Armed Knockout and Cadet Shane Conley won 4th Place in Unarmed Knockout. This meet was very successful for our unit and we all hope to improve for upcoming meets, so we can place for the Area Six Drill Meet in March. Congratulations to all the cadets who took part in the meet!

Annual Quarters QuartersCadet Ensign Daniel Free

Quarters is a short ceremony held for all of the cadets in our NJROTC Unit. The purpose of Quarters is to have a chance to practice forming our company for a ceremony, but the primary purpose is to reward cadets for their hard work with awards and promotions. When we gather, we create a company formation in the gym that includes platoons from each class period of Naval Science and LDC classes. Our Master of Ceremonies was the Communications Officer, Cadet Amanda LaTorre. Our Commanding Officer, Cadet Zachary Jobe, and our Executive Officer, Cadet Charles Loyack, presented the awards to the deserving cadets. Approximately 20 cadets were promoted during the ceremony. Chief Heath and Commander Erickson were present to oversee the award ceremony. Overall, quarters was a success for all involved and will become a more regular event for our unit. Congratulations to all the cadets that were rightfully promoted and I hope to see you all at the next Quarters Ceremony.

Marksmanship Match ReportCadet Chief Petty Officer Cody Broughton

On Saturday, October 20th, the Cary NJROTC Marksmanship Team competed in the Lexington BBQ Match at Lexington Senior High School. The team placed 14th and the match was a great experience for new shooters and experienced to the team. Competitors were Cadets Broughton, Castano, Kosek, Player, and Cadet Nelson was our alternate shooter. Many other members of the team went to spectate and learn about sanctioned matches as well, so the competition was overall educational and support for the team as a whole. If you are interested in joining the team, make sure to contact Cadets Evans or Broughton to arrange the time to take the safety test. We are looking forward to more success this year!

Everything You Need To Know About AMICadet Senior Chief Petty Officer Amanda LaTorre

On November 28, 2018, our NJROTC Unit will participate in its 23rd Annual Military Inspection. All cadets that have an NJROTC class this semester will be participating in this very important event. AMI consists of our guest of honor Captain Stern conducting a personnel inspection, a presentation of the colors, drill performances, an award ceremony, a pass and review, an evaluation of logistics, an evaluation of administration, and more. Our unit has been preparing for AMI since the first day of school; making sure every cadet knows their basic knowledge and basic drill movements. Our cadets will continue to work hard to look professional so that they may represent not only the young men and women of the Cary High School but also the United States Navy. Families of cadets are invited to attend the ceremony portion of AMI and we hope to see you all there.

The N.C. State Game ExperienceCadet Seamen Jada Futrell

Hello, to all my fellow cadets. I know some of you believe N.C. State Games are just a waste of time and not worth going to, but if you believe that you are wrong! N.C. State Games benefit everyone in our unit. Our unit receives a percentage of what is earned at the games and that’s where over 80% of our funding comes from. Attendance at these games have been very low Cadet wise and we need to change that. Some incentives that are offered for attending the games are; free lemonade and pretzel while working the game, money off your Military Ball ticket, the hours you work go towards getting promoted, not paying an excessive amount of money for trips through NJROTC, and more. Also, attending these games helps you bond with fellow cadets and even the parent(s) at your booth. I personally always take away powerful leadership skills from these games. Watching the booth leaders at the game manage everything and everyone at their booth is such a great way to develop great leadership skills. The Unit Service Officer, Cadet Lieutenant Junior Grade Robert Bowers said, “I am so lucky to take charge of this event and it’s always a really great time attending. Everyone has done a great job this year and I hope attendance improves!” N.C. State Games are great learning experiences and you will always benefit from attending.

The True Value of DrillCadet Petty Officer First Class Victoria Sanderson

Cadets seem to have a tendency to see drill as a mindless, boring, and useless team; but I believe that's not true. There’s a lot more to drill than just listening to commands. If you look closer at drill, you’ll see that there are many benefits when drilling. One of the things we talk about in NJROTC is leadership and part of what we learn in the classroom is leadership skills. Participating in drill can actually help you apply and truly develop leadership skills. Leading drill can also, help you gain a sense of confidence which in turn helps you develop your ability to lead. It’s a self-fulfilling cycle, used in the best way possible. I’ve noticed my ability to work with others has gotten better since being on the Drill Team. Every movement requires everyone to do their part, so teamwork is a crucial part of being on the team. The ability to work well with others is a skill you will use throughout your life. When you’re on a routine, you need to hold yourself with pride, shoulders back and each step deliberate and purposeful. You’ll notice your upper body strength will increase as well. The rifles we use for our armed routines are about 10 pounds, so holding them for so long builds up the muscle in your arms and back, since you need to maintain posture and position while using them. There are so many good things about drilling that people overlook but I hope my article opens your eyes to the many advantages being on the Drill Team has. If you can, come to drill and give it a try one day! I think you’ll find many of the same benefits from it, and hopefully, you’ll come to enjoy it as much as I do!
