T THE CHURCH OF ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York 10924 www.sjegoshen.org - (845) 294-5328 - [email protected] THE MOST HOLY TRINITY - JUNE 11, 2017 Take a look at any one of the red Worship hymnals in the pews, and chances are you’ll find ripped or crum- pled pages, broken spines, torn covers, or any combination thereof. Our books have given noble and faith- ful service to the parish, but between the ravages of time and hymnal racks that aren’t quite wide enough to accommodate them, they are, with a few exceptions, in sorry shape. A friend of mine, James Wetzel, is the director of music at the Parish of St. Vincent Ferrer and St. Cathe- rine of Siena in Manhattan. Some time ago, James sent word that they were looking to relocate the relative- ly new hymnals from St. Vincent Ferrer to a church that could use them (their music program has gone in a different direction, and uses printed leaflets rather than hardbound books). I told James that we would be happy to take them, as they’re the same edition as the ones we have now. It took some time to work out the logistics, but thanks to the generosity of my opposite number, Fr. Walter Wagner, OP, and the heroic efforts of our parishioner, Steven Kaloz, the hymnals made their way north to Goshen last month. There is one minor detail: just as our hymnals are embossed with the name of our church, so, too, these are stamped with the name of their original home. However, I think that’s a small price to pay for the benefit of slightly used (or as they say in the car industry, pre-loved) books. In gratitude, we will celebrate Masses both for the donors of our original hymnals, as well as for those who gave them to St. Vincent Ferrer. I’d like to have a “hymnal swap” on Saturday, June 24, beginning at 9:00am; it shouldn’t take us long to re- move the old ones and put out the new. If you’d like to take part, just give me a call or drop me a note. + + + We’ve noticed an uptick recently in the number of couples seeking to have a civil marriage “validated” in the Church. In some cases, one or both spouses needed an annulment; in others, the couple was (usually wrongly) advised that, for any number of reasons, they couldn’t marry in the Church. If you or someone you know was not married by a priest or deacon, I encourage you to speak with me or, once they arrive, Fr. Giacona or Fr. Peter; we’ll be happy to outline the steps necessary to get you on track to the sacrament. + + + Speaking of arrivals, Fr. Giacona is slated to start this Thursday, June 15; Fr. Jeff returns from Fatima on Friday, June 16; and Fr. Peter is scheduled to arrive on Saturday, June 24. For one week or so, we’ll have the enviable distinction of four diocesan priests in the house, in addition to the faithful assistance of Fr. Komonchak and Fr. Jim. This reminds me of a photo in the written history of St. Helena’s Church in the Parkchester section of The Bronx. Taken during a parade in the late 1940s, it features Msgr. Arthur Scanlan, the legendary founding pastor, marching with his assistants – all seven of them! Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann

Take a look at any one of the red Worship hymnals in the pews, and chances are you’ll find ripped or crum-pled pages, broken spines, torn covers, or any combination thereof. Our books have given noble and faith-ful service to the parish, but between the ravages of time and hymnal racks that aren’t quite wide enough to accommodate them, they are, with a few exceptions, in sorry shape.
