Prop Scraping & Zinc Replacement!

A lot of members missed this deal last year, so don’t miss it this year! Once again, we are organizing a day of prop scraping and zinc replacement on Saturday March 28th with Sunday as a back-up day. You provide the zincs and we do the work! Russ Murcheson, the diver, has agreed to keep the cost at the previous rate of $30.00 per boat for both the prop scraping and the zinc replacement. Jim Ganderton will do the organizing, so all you have to do is send Jim an email at [email protected] with your boat name and your slip number and he will organize the sequence and be able to give you an approximate time for the work to be done.

Vice Commodore’s Report By Chris Gadsby

-anuary has been a very busy month for House and Grounds with our Committee meeting held on -anuary 13th to plan projects for this year and discuss future improvements. We have decided to wait until August for fall weather to paint

the clubhouse. Here is a summary of other projects underwayB Clubhouse roof C the Board has selected a contractor from the five bids received and will recommend this to our membership at the February 24th General Meeting. The roof will be steel and installed in March. Don Dashwood has been a great help in evaluating the bids. The colour scheme selected for the club-house features a light blue steel roof and eggnog walls to match the gatehouse, the shed and ultimately the A-frame Lwhen they are also paintedM. The concept drawing here C also posted on the club-house board C illustrates the colour scheme. Thanks to Lorne ShantQ for his artistic rendering.

Work will proceed in the neRt month or two to install photocell lights and plugs Lfor special eventsM in the parking lots. Many thanks to Bob Reynolds for coordinating this. The ReorganiQation Committee is developing an integrated plan for cabinets, trophy storage and furniture for the clubhouse. Thanks to -une Simmons, -ill Sydneysmith and Susannah Devitt for their work on this. They will also be hanging the superb photographs of all our Past Commodores which have been enlarged,

reprinted and framed by Linda Matteson-Reynolds. Thank you so much Linda. Marc Lalonde and Peter Toby will be building a bar cabinet for additional storage behind our bar. It should be a great addition. Thanks guysV Finally, we have booked all tents, toilets, tables, chairs and garbage

containers for the Round Saltspring Race. We will be looking for additional volunteers to help us staff the grounds for that event. It is very satisfying to work with such an enthusiastic group of club members. !

Cruising News By Rob 'enny, Fleet Captain+ Cruising

Hello, again, to all who may be thinking about cruising this year. We had wonderful participation last year, and > have every reason to believe this year will be even better. Now is the time to do a little planning and preparation. Aou may have already had your charts and cruising books out to study them. What about starting some little projects to get your boats readyC Maybe this is a good time

to take your flag staff home and varnish it, or make up some new curtains for your boat. >f you are like me, you probably have a list of things you want to do to your boat. > want to tell you about a little project > have going in my workshop this winter. >t started with a friend and myself chatting about building a boat from one sheet of plywood. This sounded like a challenge > could rise to, so > made three cardboard models, using a scale that could be transferred to the full size plywood sheet. One of those models > liked well enough to try it full size with 1I8K doorskin ply Lvery cheapM, and fastened together with plastic zip ties. > made some very slight modifications to it and decided to go for the real thing, in N mm Ocume ply, using the doorskin pieces as patterns. The real thing was also held together with plastic ties, then a strip of fiberglass epoxied inside and outside of the seams. After that was sanded, you could hardly notice how the hull was held together, and it produced Quite a strong hull. To finish the boat, > used some Aellow Cedar for gunwales, seat, and anything else that reQuired solid wood. The whole thing is glued together with epoxy, with no screws or nails. After using this nice wood, of course, > could not resist applying a coat of varnish, to bring up the colour and grain of the Aellow Cedar, contrasting with the darker Ocume ply. The inside is now painted a light gray, and > am going to paint the outside bottom with a red enamel, resembling antifouling paint. The little boat, which > call a skiff, has a flat bottom, well flared sides, and Quite a bit of rocker to the bottom. >t has a small pram bow, and transom stern with cut out for a small motor. The overall length is 7T 11K, and maximum beam UT UK. >t has two rowing positions, and a moveable seat, making it Quite a versatile little craft. The launching date will be announced when the time is right. Back to you. Vood luck with all your little projects! !
