IN OUR PARISH

I write this farewell with fond memories and a bit of a heavy heart. The heartache is from having to leave so many good people who have shared with me some wonderful life moments. Every Mass that I have said here has brought joy to me.

Seeing your faces, hands and hearts open to receive our Lord’s Word and His Life in the Eucharist is something for which I pray I will never grow tired.

I recall the applause from many of you in the Cathedral when Bishop Ricken read my

assignment to St. Raphael the Archangel Parish. I rejoice in the love I felt when so many of you lined up with welcoming greetings for me in Good Samaritan Hall after my first Masses. I tear up as I re-experience the many Communions that resound in my ears. The wonderful voices of musicians and a parish that really sings, are intermingled with the beautiful “Amen” responses to the Body of Christ.

At the same time, the life of Christ who we choose to follow and imitate, is a reminder that our

lives are a journey toward God, and we all pray to be reunited one day. I love a quote from Richard Bach who writes, “Meeting again after moments or lifetimes is certain for those who are friends.” May we meet again and again in the Eucharist where we truly live Communion with each other and with our Lord, until that day when that Communion is forever.

Gratefully yours always for all you have given and shared with me, Fr. Luke

Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity From June 16 to June 28 Sister Anne Marie (and Sister Pam) will be involved in their Community Chapter. For the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, Manitowoc, this happens every six years. Delegates are elected to enact proposals which assist the sisters in living their religious life. It is a great time of renewal and recommitment to live the vowed life. New leadership is also elected. There is a Community Director and four council members in leadership. The bishop is present for the election of the Community Director on June 24. After that commences, he leaves and the four councilors are elected. Then any unfinished business is completed.

If you want to follow our community happenings, you may “like” our Facebook page (Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity). We have over 1,300 followers so you can be added if you don’t already follow us. You can also visit our web page: http://franciscanizedworld.fscc-calledtobe.org/category/franciscanized-world/

Please keep our community in your prayers as we pray and set a vision for our next six years.

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

15 youth from St. Raphael participate in a SHINE catholic camp. Fifteen of our youth spent the week of June 17-21 on SHINE catholic work camp in Chicago. We gathered with over 100 youth from Wisconsin and Minnesota. S.H.I.N.E. Catholic Work Camp is a Catholic-based Service Retreat based in Tomball TX. SHINE stands for "Servin’ Him In the Needy and the Elderly." There were daily youth liturgies, Adoration, praise and worship time, and an evening of confessions. We also shared in team building activities, nightly skits, and some social time. Our various groups spent time refurbishing homes by doing such things as painting, housecleaning, landscaping, and yard work. We spent a lot of time at "Our Lady of Victory" grade school. There we painted, moved furniture, cleaned, and lots more painting. The goal of the service project is for the participants to build up hope in the community, connect this service to our faith in Jesus Christ, and to search for ways they can go back and serve in their own communities. We learned how to tape, paint and clean. We experienced a deepening in our faith as we gathered in prayer and confessions. We enjoyed getting to know youth from Minnesota and other Wisconsin parishes.

WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES –

The conversation around the lunchroom table that day revolved around the people who had come in looking for

work. Among them there had been a young man with tattoos covering his arms and peeking out from the collar

of his T-shirt, a young woman with rings in her nose and eyebrows as well as her ears, a girl with blue hair, a

girl whose hair was covered with a veil in the style of Islam, two young men who came in holding hands, and a

middle-aged veteran who had a prosthetic hand in place of the one he had lost in war.

Many people would have had no problem deciding who to invite back for a second interview and who to send

away, but the people at the table knew better than to judge based on first impressions. “Who do you say that I

am?” The people coming through their doors could just as easily have been asking the same question, because

the people in this most unlikely group had one thing in common. They were all volunteering to serve people in

need. The kid with the tattoos was a cook. The Muslim woman was a nurse. The girl with blue hair was a fire-

fighter and the veteran was a carpenter. Some had been rejected by family and friends who found it difficult to

look beyond first impressions. Others were having trouble finding work because employers were afraid to hire

them. Unfortunately, judging people based solely on what they look like can make it difficult to appreciate the

beauty that lies beneath.

“[N]either Jew nor Greek…slave nor free…male and female….” Thankfully, the people at that cafeteria table

cared more for who the young people were on the inside than for what they looked like on the outside. We may

wonder why the crowds that followed Jesus had no idea who He really was but if the Son of Man came to us

today with tattoos and blue hair and asked the same question, would we recognize Him? Or would we, too,

reject Him? What does it mean to be “…all one in Christ Jesus?”

Growing Future Church Leaders

Have you ever wondered how deacons,

parish directors, directors of religious

education, and religious education teachers learn about our Church and develop their ministry

leadership? Many of these leaders have grown in their faith with help from Tony Pichler, Lay Ministry Formation

Director.

Tony works with current and future Church leaders. “When people enter the program, they are like flowers

beginning to bud. As time passes, they grow, open up, and

keep growing as if they’re in a movie that has been sped up. Their change is remarkable,” says Pichler.

By participating in classes, workshops, and retreats

and seminars, these leaders learn to use their love and skills to become the face of Christ to others. Their

opportunity is made possible by the Bishop’s Appeal. “Without the Bishop’s Appeal, we would not be able to help

as we do,” says Pichler.

Please prayerfully consider making a gift to the Bishop’s Appeal. For more information on how to give to

the Bishop’s Appeal contact your parish, visit the Bishop’s

Appeal website at www.CatholicFoundationgb.org/give, or call Debbie toll-free at 877-500-3580 ext. 8184.

Baptism Preparation

Infants accept the faith through the faith of their parents, so St. Raphael the Archangel Parish offers group sessions to prepare parents for the baptism ceremony and for leading their children in a life of faith. Sessions are held twice per month, all year round. Please call, e-mail or stop by the parish office to register for the Baptism Preparation group session and to schedule your child’s baptism. See the parish website for more details. (www.raphael.org)

Have you ever thought about becoming Catholic but aren’t sure how or where to begin the process? Do you have questions about Mary, the sacraments, the Mass, saints, the Pope, Catholic views?

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process that begins the Catholic journey of faith. Beginning September, inquirers and team members meet Monday evenings to break open the scriptures, share life and faith experiences, reflect on God’s grace and focus on questions about the Catholic faith.

If you or someone you know is interested in or curious about the Catholic faith, consider the RCIA program. There is nothing to sign or commit to. The process is open to all adults. Contact Judy Mayo at 920-426-3627 or [email protected]
