Feel Good Vibes During Our Darkest Times ~ Uplifting Stories During Quarantine ~
Patrick Riley
The world is experiencing something that is truly
unprecedented. We are being forced to stay home and isolate
ourselves from each other in an effort to prevent the spread
of the infamous coronavirus. However, even in our darkest
times, we can still unite together and still be positive.
These are just some of the millions of stories people have
shared to make the world smile. Enjoy!
1) Siblings Hold Porch Concert For Neighbor
After seeing Helena Schlam, their
78-year-old neighbor stressed over
self-isolating, nine-year-old Taran
Tien and six-year-old Calliope decided
to play classical music on Schlam’s
front porch, from a Bach Minuet to “Go
tell Aunt Rhody.” Schlam is an avid
lover of classical music and hasn’t
been able to leave the house in days, making this concert
very special.
2) Newly Engaged Woman Shares The Exciting News With
Grandfather Through His Window
Carly Boyd had to think outside of
the box while sharing her news with
her grandfather, whose nursing home
was shut to visitors. So she
decided to share it with her
grandfather through her window,
making it especially emotional by
showing him the ring through the
window. Nurses at the Premier
Living and Rehab Center in Lake
Waccamaw, North Carolina say it was “truly magical.”
3) Stranger Carries Out Act of Kindness at Grocery Store
An unlikely hero named Adam from
Cullman, Alabama nicely offered to
pay for two people’s shopping while
stocking up on supplies at the local
grocery store. According to the
shoppers, he asked for nothing in
return and told the two people to
“have a blessed day” as he sets an
example that we should all be
following during this time: caring
for others.
4) Husband and Wife find a way to celebrate Anniversary
Mr. Shellard wanted to show
his love towards his wife in
a very special way as the
pandemic altered his 67th
wedding anniversary to his
wife. Unfortunately, he
wasn’t able to see his wife
on that day. However, he decided to still make it a special
day by standing outside his wife’s nursing home window with
balloons and a sign that said: “I’ve loved you for 67 years
and still do. Happy Anniversary.” Nurses described it as a
special moment with Nancy, his wife, blowing kisses and
waving from her window after seeing the sign.

Berkshire League Backyard Sports
By Marissa VanOrmer
With Special thanks to @berkshireleaguebackyardsports
If you’re like me and the other 573 followers of Berkshire League Backyard Sports (@berkshireleaguebackyardsports), you miss the day to day competition we find in athletics, from gym class to extracurricular team sports. This account, found on Instagram, is a fun way to keep our Berkshire League competition alive, all while encouraging everyone to get outside and stay healthy. Just in the first month or so of its existence, it has about 61 videos of trickshots and training, by staff and students alike! Scrolling through, you can see all kinds of sports: basketball, soccer, volleyball, baseball, soccer, golf, biking, gymnastics, some track events, tennis, swimming, field hockey, lifting, and even cornhole! Earlier this month our very own school was represented in a bracket-style competition by Shawn Galeski. We beat Terryville in the semi finals (boo the roos), moving on to the last round, where unfortunately, we lost to Housatonic. This page is so much fun and great motivation to get outside and stay competitive.
When questioned about why they started the page, they answered, “The idea was born out of a conversation about how bored the league’s athletes and coaches must be without day to day practices, games, matches, meets, etc. We were hoping to spark some interest in people getting outside, staying active, having some fun, and maybe competing a little bit. We were hoping that those things could take place outside in somebody’s backyard or driveway. The idea wasn’t to take the place of the spring sports season, but to give everyone a little diversion and hopefully some entertainment. The logo which has taken a couple of different forms was designed with a color that isn’t associated with any one school in the BL because we’re hoping that this is something that can be embraced by everyone. It’s been great that there have been videos sent in by at least one person from every school. We think it’s been a good way to see what everyone has been up to and hopefully a way for everyone in the BL to stay connected through this time of social distancing.” To the Bears, they say, “Get out of hibernation and send some videos!” I couldn’t have said it better myself! So go ahead! Get outside, stay healthy, submit some videos, and follow Berkshire League Backyard Sports. Let’s stay competitive and connected during this troubling time. School In Quarantine: Thomaston Vs.
Terryville Sandra McDonald vs. Roger Descoteaux
I collaborated with one of my best rivals from Terryville to
compare our towns in this trying time. So, we hope you enjoy some more (light-hearted) competition, and combined collaboration,
once again.
Thomaston Terryville ★ Work over Google Classroom ★ Similar work as in school,
but different presentations ★ Occasional Google Meets with
teachers ★ Announcements from Mrs.
Raymond and Mr. Perrucci occasionally over email
★ Not all clubs are functioning normally, but “The Cave” is doing our best
★ A lot of my friends are excited to go back. We’re all missing each other and a lot of our teachers!
★ Work over Google Classroom ★ Same work we would get in
school ★ ‘Office Hours’, meaning
Google Meets with your teachers
★ Announcements from the principal and higher-ups via email
★ Clubs aren't really together, but the members, like the DnD club, are still interacting
★ A lot of people at Terryville too are excited to be back and see all of our friends again!
The most important thing to remember in this time is that we’re all trying our best to work hard in these circumstances, and no matter what school you’re from, we wish you the best of luck in these times! THS should stand together, no matter which THS.
Let’s save the real competition for sports when we’re all back!
