Part of the game
Football seasons have always been a highlight of the year. When I was in high school a big portion of my time was spent at the football field in our concession stand- The Bandana Bar. I was also a member of our school’s pep club. It was a natural place for me, as my best friend’s father was the football coach. I enjoyed decorating team lockers and helping to develop ideas for spirit weeks. What I really enjoyed were the pep rallies. It was exciting to have all 660 students crammed into the gymnasium to cheer on our Giles High School Spartans. The band would play, cheers were cried out, and our team knew that we were behind them!
Last Wednesday Stephen Nelson, Owen Ragland, and I traveled to Leawood, Kansas for the Leadership Institute at the Church of the Resurrection. Adam Hamilton, an inspirational and innovative United Methodist pastor, has been a part of an incredible journey with this unique congregation. Part of their mission together is to help revitalize the United Methodist Church as a whole. This year, Adam was joined by John Ortberg and a host of other leaders in executing this event.
The theme was revival, and we focused on the movement of John Wesley’s ministry. It was exciting to be reminded of the incredible and sometimes messy life of Wesley as he tried to follow God’s call. John Ortberg preached a riveting sermon entitled, “Who is this Man?” The sermon is based on his book that focuses on how a simple carpenter from Nazareth has changed and continues to impact human history; not to mention billions of personal lives daily. We also sang inspiring music (both modern and traditional), learned important ministry matters, and enjoyed much fellowship.
This Leadership Institute was an incredible pep rally! It was a great reminder that God continues to move through us crazy people called Methodists. It was a reminder that the Church is alive and moving. It was a reminder that we play for the winning team, a team that has already won the game. We just get to invite others to the rally to celebrate.
So church, be excited that you get to be a part of the game. Remember that worship and the activities we do together are a part of the ongoing pep rallies and celebrations! Thanks be to God that we have won in Christ!
Peace,
Asa

Ready to provide relief It’s been more than a year since super storm Sandy battered much of the northeast U.S. For many places it will take years to recover as millions of people were directly affected by the storm’s wrath.
Are you interested in helping the victims of Sandy? If so we’ve got a mission for you! Later this month, the Outreach team will host an informational meeting on a planned trip to Delaware to assist in storm cleanup projects. The meeting is expected to last about 30 minutes. The goal is to gather more details about the trip as well as picking the dates for it.

Learning about planned giving It is possible to keep your spirit of giving alive and well long after you pass on. The Holston Conference Foundation specializes in helping you make informed decisions about estate giving and much more. If you are interested in learning more about how this all works you might want to check out one of the two upcoming workshops the Foundation is sponsoring this month. Both of them are at Fountain City UMC. The first is October 6th at 4:00 pm and the other is October 16th at 6:00 pm. If you have any questions please send an e-mail to Paul Bowman at [email protected] .

Stop the bullying Webster’s defines a bully as “one who is habitually cruel to others who are weaker.” According to a 2008-2009 study from the Department of Education, 28% of students in grades 6-12 experienced bullying. Across the country there are numerous efforts to raise awareness about the problem of bullying and how to deal with it.

Back from the sea While students in the area are enjoying “Fall Break,” a group of nine folks from 1st UMC are just back from a break of their own on St. Simons, Island, GA.
The “Encore, Encore” senior event was held at Epworth by the Sea, United Methodist retreat center. During the few days there, the folks enjoyed lessons on the area’s Methodist history, sailed on a shrimp boat, and got a few lessons at a variety of workshops.
Positive response The Golden Opportunities event held a few weeks ago appears to have been a real hit with the folks who came (more than 100 in all). The Maryville District’s Older Adult Council wanted to make sure the volunteers at 1st UMC know what a great joy it was to work with them, sending a big THANK YOU! for all their hard work.

Can we serve? Yes, we can! Over the past few week children attending Kids Own Worship have been learning more about the many ways to serve God. This past Sunday Whitney and Brent Roberts led KOW. The kids wore crowns and proclaimed “I am a servant of God.” The discussion focused on how we are all servants of God, even our leaders. The kids also learned that when we feel God calling us to serve in the coming week, we will say, “yes! I can serve!”
Just a reminder! There is NO Kids Own Worship this coming Sunday, October 6th.

Thanks for the tunes! This past Sunday, the Joy Singers lent their voices to the 10:30 Traditional worship service, singing Song of Peace. We just want to say THANKS for doing such a great job! And speaking of thanks. The Tennessee Wesleyan College Chorale expresses its appreciation for the church’s kindness and hospitality during the group’s visit here on September 15th. The generous freewill offering given on that day will help the Chorale prepare for an upcoming European tour coming up in May of next year.
