The Church Bell Safe Sanctuaries Page 2 Fall for Service Page 4 Back to college treats Page 5 Creating a spirit of invitation For the past several years the Witness Team has sponsored Open Door Month in September. This plays off the United Methodist Church’s slogan, “Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors.” It has always been a meaningful four weeks as we have stretched ourselves beyond our walls in subtle, yet powerful ways. This year we are joining with nearly 20,000 other congregations across America to welcome people back to (or maybe for the first time) church on September 15th for National Back to Church Sunday (more on page 5). Brenda, Larry, and I will be preaching in the month of September on how to be invitational. A sheet of resources and DVD material has been offered through Sunday school classes to help inspire us all in how to invite someone to church. What we hope you will remember this month is that God uses us as individuals to help change lives. Can you recall moments in the Biblical narrative when God empowered the one to do something incredible? Think about Moses, Deborah, David, Elijah, Jesus, Paul, etc. Many of these people talked about in Scripture tried to accomplish things on their own, but were later empowered by God to do something pretty incredible. Though God was always with them on their journeys, being open to God’s vision in their lives allowed them to do great things. Perhaps this invitation that you extend will be the beginning of a great legacy. We often feel intimidated or unsure about inviting others to join us in worship. For many, it feels as big to us as standing up to the Pharaoh or slaying Goliath. But trust in God to use you in this invitation and know that you have a community supporting you. Be watchful and mindful of those who need an invitation to come for the first time and those you can invite back to the faith community. We are excited to see what God will do this month! Run … play … serve! A few weeks from now, people from all over the community will help build an intergenerational playground behind the old Fort Craig School in Maryville. The non-profit organization called Kaboom! is leading the effort, but would like for YOU to get involved. The playground build is on September 21st beginning at 7:45 am. Volunteers are needed to help with the building, with registration, food service and handing out water. To help out just send an e-mail to [email protected] or call 379-7904. Another fun way to help out a good cause is to take part in the Camper Scamper 5K to benefit Camp Wesley Woods. Saturday, September 21st. The race begins at 8:00 am.

Fall for ServiceFall for Service A day of missionA day of mission

20132013

Last Fall more than a hundred people came out on a cool fall morning to participate in “Change the World Day.” This year the spirit of helping others will continue, but on a smaller scale. This time the hope is to have people “Fall for Service” on September 14th. This past Sunday, the Outreach team worked to hammer out the details about this event. There is room for 20 volunteers with the possibility of adding more later if other projects come to fruition. To the right are the main areas of outreach connected to this “Fall for Service: day of mission.” If you want to volunteer, please

call the church office at 865-982-1273,

sign up on the website, www.fumc-maryville.org, or use

the tear off in the upcoming worship bulletins.

Dinner at Barley’s in Maryville Come out and enjoy time with friends and get a taste of Downtown Maryville’s newest restaurant. We’ll be meeting at Barley’s Taproom and Pizzeria September 20th at 7:00 pm. Hope to see YOU there.

Sunday School: Jesus, Bombs and Ice Cream Continues in Room 128—Sunday at 9:15 am

Hopefully by now you have heard about what 1st UMC is doing on September 15th. If not, here’s what you need to know. This church along with nearly 20-thousand across the country are participating in National Back to Church Sunday. The ideas is simple. Most Americans have been to church, yet only about 20 percent actually attend on a regular basis. YOU can help change that with one simple act, offer up a personal invitation to someone to come to church with you on September 15th. Here are some facts about church attendance and the spirit of invitation to ponder: 82 percent of the unchurched are likely to attend church if invited by a trusted friend or relative. Only 2 percent of church-going people invite someone to church in a given year. 41% of the formerly churched said they would return to the local church if a friend or acquaintance invited

them Over the next few weeks you will be seeing videos about this effort and will be given some “tools” to help make inviting people easier. The church Facebook page, Twitter and the church website will also have tools and information you can use to help others come “back to church.” *During the 8:15 am and 10:30 Traditional worship services on September 15th you will get to hear the voices of the Tennessee Wesleyan College Choir.

“C” is for cookies and college! Students at Maryville College are settling into the Fall Semester. To help get things off to a good start, 1st UMC traveled to campus on Sunday to participate in the annual college and church picnic. A special “thank you” goes out to all of you who brought in cookies to give to students visiting the church booth. In addition, students were given reusable tote bags and plastic cups with the church logo and worship times.

The counters in Wesley Hall were filled up over the weekend with cookies baked especially for students at Maryville College!

Just bring them by the church office or give them to Denise Johns.

Feasting like kings On Sunday, August 25th, children in the Kindergarten Sunday school class got to have a little party as

part of the day’s lesson. The children also packed four bags of school supplies to send to UMCOR as their mission project for August.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jeruslaem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Guessing to learn This past Sunday, children in Kid’s Own Worship used Acts 1:8 as a basis for the morning’s lesson on what the church does for others. During KOW everyone played a personalized version of the kid’s guessing game called Head Bands to help learn more about specific missions of the church and about members of the staff.
