The Colonist OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 18 3

Pool News Now that the summer months have gone, there are no lifeguards at the pool. The pool will be heated through October, but please remember, it is every-one’s responsibility to obey the pool rules. A few reminders: NO GLASS of any kind on the pool deck or in the BBQ area. NO ALCOHOL is allowed on the pool deck or in the BBQ area. NO SMOKING is allowed on the pool deck or in the BBQ area. Thank you!

Diving Board Removal? The possible removal of the diving board will be on the agenda at the next Board meeting. As most of you are probably aware, the diving board has been non-functional and unusable for months. The plan had been to have it be repaired and reinstalled. However, only one company was willing to bid for the installation and their cost was prohibitively expensive. In addition, the HOA’s choices for insurance companies are limited because of the potentially high liability related to the use of the board. For these reasons, the Colony Board of Directors is considering to not reinstall the diving board and to have it and its hardware permanently removed from the pool deck. We understand that this is a major decision that affects the community that enjoys the pool, but we need to discuss what will be in the best interests of the entire community with regards to safety and fiscal responsibility.

WISEPlace Food and Towel Drive In step with the season, our neighborhood is hosting a toilet-ry and towel drive for the month of October and a canned food drive for the month of November 2018 to benefit a local organization called WISEplace, located in Santa Ana, CA.

WISEPlace, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a community of housing and hope for women in cri-sis. Formerly the South Orange County YWCA, WISEPlace has a 90-year history of caring for the com-munity. By meeting basic needs such as housing, clothing, physical and emotional nourishment, as well as vocational and life skills training, the WISEPlace Hotel for Women is one of the few places unaccompanied homeless women can go to begin again. In October, you will have the opportunity to participate in this giving campaign by donating toiletries (shampoo, condi-tioner, soap, toothbrushes/brushes, etc) and your new or gently used bath towels. In November, we will be collecting canned food and other nonperishable food items (cereal, boxed food non-frozen/non-refrigerated). There are two drop off locations: 1) The home of Demetra Arvanitidis, 3691 Scottsdale Drive

and 2) The home of Eileen Tsai, 14311 Miro Ct, corner of Hem-

ingway. There will be large black bins outside the front entrances. Receipts available upon request. The items will be dropped off at WISEplace (contact Demetra at [email protected] for receipts and/or if you would like to come along to drop off). Thank you for all your generosity in advance and for making our neighborhood the great place it is to live!

Veteran's Day 2018 The City of Irvine hosts a special ceremony in the Formal Garden to pay tribute to our nation's troops — past and pre-sent. The event is free and open to the public.

More Colony Quotes By Myra Radlow A walk around our neighborhood will quickly make clear that we are an artists colony, or The Colony for short. Most of our streets are named for artists – painters, sculptors, writers, and some are named for famous loca-tions where artists gathered. But why no Laguna Beach?? Here are some quotes about our artists colo-ny… “An artist is a creature driven by demons. He doesn’t know why they chose him and is usually too busy to wonder why.” William Faulkner, Writer

“Who here wants to be a writer?’ I asked. Everyone in the room raised his hand. ‘Why the hell aren’t you home writing?’ I said, and left the stage.” Leon Uris, Writer (from his book QB VII)

“Always design a thing by considering its next larger con-text – a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan.” Eero Saarinen, Architect

“Art has absolutely no existence as veracity, as truth.”

Marcel Duchamp, Artist

“In the arts, as in life, everything is possible provided it is based on love.” Marc Chagall, Painter

Sur: Perhaps this refers to Big Sur along the northern coast of California. Big Sur is a remote, undeveloped, fantastically intense stretch of California coastline north of San Simeon and south of Carmel. In many parts, the ocean crashes directly into tremendously steep moun-tainsides. Over the years, many writers and artists have found themselves living and working in Big Sur, including Henry Miller, Hunter S. Thompson, Jack Kerouac, Ansel Adams, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Trent Reznor, John Ad-ams, Vilmos Zsigmond, and Orson Welles.

Architectural Review Committee (ARC) by Eileen Tsai

Application Requirements and Procedures for Approval

Some exterior home changes have been made in the Colony in past years without going through our application process or, even worse, needed repairs and improvements are not undertaken, partly due to worries about how troublesome the whole architectural application process might be. I hope this article helps to clear up misconceptions and encourage more homeowners to submit applications for exterior work visible to the public as required by our CC&R’s and Guidelines. Please remember that the homeowners association has the legal right to require exterior projects done without approved applications to be removed or re-done. Our goal is to help homeowners comply with association rules, not to hinder reasonable projects that make the Colony look fresher and better.

The revised 2-page architectural application is available on the colonyirvine.com website where it can be typed in. Please note the requirements listed on the second page. When we receive incomplete applications, we usually contact the homeowner to supply the missing information before our monthly meeting, often a color photo of the property and area to be worked, or paint chips, or a list of plants or a drawing of proposed plant layout, etc. We cannot approve incomplete applications. Keep in mind the purpose of application information requirements is for our committee members to be able to visualize the finished look when a project is proposed. We cannot do so if we don’t see the paint colors, plant names, or brochures showing materials to be used.

Most applications are approved when presented at the monthly meeting. A few incomplete, unclear, or more complicated projects such as remodels, may be tabled for additional required information, and then approved at a subsequent meeting. Occasionally, we receive applications for backyard projects, such as replacement patio covers for areas not visible from the street for which applications were not required.

When approved, homeowners have 90 days to complete projects as described. Extensions of completion time can be granted as needed, especially for larger projects or emergency situations. If you have window or door replacement projects, make sure to allow for manufacturer delivery schedule delays which can take months. We try to accommodate requested

start dates as much as possible. We do spot check completed projects for compliance with application descriptions, plants, materials and colors.

Thank you again to Myra Radlow for the many hours spent in reducing our prior 8-page application with 3 pages of instruction to the 2-page application including requirements on our website. Please note the current approved Sherwin-Williams paint colors.

Please Consider Serving on the ARC Committee I have served as chair of the Architectural Review

Committee for more than six years now – and am ready to step down and encourage another homeowner to take over this rewarding way to serve others. This is a great way to meet homeowners and residents who are not your immediate neighbors. We have wonderful committee members who give of their time and expertise to review applications and often add useful advice and suggestions. We currently have a commercial construction project manager, a garden book publisher and an architect volunteering on our committee.

We meet at 7pm in the clubhouse on the first Thursday of each month – except on holidays, when the date is usually pushed back one week. Our meetings are friendly and productive and we do our best not to waste homeowner time. We also review and approve applications mailed to the property manager where homeowners do not come in person. Homeowners are usually called within 1-2 days after applications are approved. Then the approved applications are delivered within a week to the property manager to add to permanent files and to mail the official approval letters to the homeowners.

The ARC Committee tries hard to make the architectural application process as painless as possible while complying with our CC&R’s directive as to “harmony of design.” Thank you to the many homeowners who have taken the time and thought to help our community continue to look attractive. Here’s to enjoying living here!

Save the Date! Adult Tea Social: Feb 9, 2019 10am-12noon in Colony Clubhouse

The Colony homeowner association is planning a new adult tea social at the clubhouse Saturday Feb 9, 2019 10am-12noon.

We are suggesting that people bring their favorite tea to share and possibly a snack that reflects your cultural heritage. Wouldn’t it be fun to discuss the cultural/medicinal significance of specialty drinks and food from different countries and cultures?

Thank you to Mrs. Demetra S, a newer homeowner, for proposing and offering to organize this event, co-sponsored by the Colony Board of Directors, Eileen Tsai and Myra Radlow.

We thought it might be fun to put on an activity for adults to get together, in addition to Colony events for kids. We are offering in-troductions and casual conversation, hopefully leading to more meaningful long-term friendships. At the very least, you will leave knowing more neighbors to say hello to on your walks! We may be able to invite a speaker from a local charity to talk about their ser-vices.

Let one of us know if you plan to attend, and if you can help with supplies and setup. More details in the next Colony issue, including contact and RSVP information. Hope you can join us. Let Eileen or Myra know if you have other ideas to bring our Colony community closer. Thank you.
