Our NAWIC year started out with a bang! We had a great dinner meeting in January with speaker Rhonda Sher talking about networking and how to communicate to others exactly what it is we do. Christina Denning was such a good sport to be the example during Rhonda’s talk.

Our Estimating class started last week with over 10 students attending. Last Thursday was our NAWIC trade show! THANK YOU to Tami McCarthy and the entire Membership Committee for hosting this event. A BIG THANK YOU to all of the sponsors who supported us that night.

Final Reminder - Our scholarship deadline is quickly approaching at the end of February. Please make sure to pass the information included with this newsletter to friends and collegues. We will be presenting the scholarships to the recipients at our Anniversary Awards Banquet and Dinner Dance on Friday, April 24th.

Please make sure to sign up today for our February Dinner Meeting on the 10th. Vince Hudley will be talking about Safety through Coaching – we all know what an important part Safety plays in all of our companies. I’m looking forward to a fresh perspective and new ideas from Vince.

Thank you,

WIC Week (Women in Construction Week) is right around the corner, March 1-7, 2015. The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women in the Construction Industry. Be sure to toot your horn and that of your female coworkers that week. Wear your NAWIC t-shirt, have a cup of coffee or tea from your NAWIC mug, use or weary anything that gives you the opportunity to promote women in our industry and talk about NAWIC. The San Diego Chapter has several activities planned for WIC Week which includes a Membership Mixer and a Bowl-a-thon. As part of giving back to the community during WIC Week the Chapter will be collecting school supplies for the Monarch School at both of these events and at the NAWIC meeting the following week (March 10th). We are also promoting a Blood Donation Drive at the San Diego Blood Bank to our chapter account “NAWC”. Google WIC Week and see what your NAWIC Sisters will do to promote and recognize women and serve the community during WIC Week.

Pay to Play - Contractors Must Pay in Order to Perform Public Works

Effective March 1, 2015, Contractors must pay $300 per year in order to qualify to work on public projects. Contractors must register on the Department of Industrial Relations (“DIR”) website and pay the fee. If a contractor fails to register, it cannot perform work on a public project. For the bottom line, jump to the end of the article.

Effective January 1, 2015, calls for bids and all contract documents must include the following:

No contractor or subcontractor may be listed on a bid proposal for a public works project (submitted on or after March 1, 2015) unless registered with the Department of Industrial Relations pursuant to Labor Code section 1725.5 [with limited exceptions from this requirement for bid purposes under Labor Code section 1771.1(a)].

No contractor or subcontractor may be awarded a contract for public work on a public works project (awarded on or after April 1, 2015) unless registered with the Department of Industrial Relations pursuant to Labor Code section 1725.5.

This project is subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the Department of Industrial Relations.

For public projects advertised to bid after March 1, 2015, and for contracts awarded after April 1, 2015, all contractors who perform work on the project must be registered on the DIR website and have paid the $300 fee in order to be eligible to perform work. Contractors who have not registered have a 90 day grace period to register.

The Bottom Line: For contractors who perform public works, it is imperative to register on the DIR website and pay a $300 fee to qualify. Carefully read all calls for bids and proposed contracts, as language regarding the requirements should be included in such documents.

FOUR WORDS FOR SETTING POWERFUL GOALS IN 2015 By: Linda Swindling, JD, CSP

How are your New Year's resolutions holding up? Did you make any? According to research, only 45% of

people make New Year's resolutions and by now, 75% have abandoned them. To put the odds in your

favor, stop using the word "resolution" and start using these four powerful words:

1) Become 2) Improve 3) Conquer 4) Commit For example, in 2015 I want to: Become...more organized.

Improve... my education.

Conquer...smoking.

Commit to...volunteering more often.

These four words are motivating AND you can begin using them anytime. These words help when you

get off track. If you haven't set goals for the year, pick a power word now and get started. If you have

goals in place, state each goal with a power word to encourage you to realize results.

SET GOALS YOU CAN KEEP To set goals or refine the ones you have, use these tips:

Know your personal mission: Just like a business has a company mission your personal mission

describes your purpose and calling. To know your mission ask yourself: What inspires me the most?

Would I do it for free? What comes effortlessly? What will I regret not doing?

There are 2 types of goal setters: Strategic and Linear. Strategic goal setters must have a desired

ending in mind to get started - they "Think Big." Linear goal setters use one goal as a stepping stone to

the next goal - they "Think Small.

How can you "Think Big?" Big goals inspire transformation and are emotionally compelling. Ask yourself

these questions to think big: What makes you anxious or nervous when you think about doing it? If you

were fearless what would you try? If you had no limits what would you do?

How can you "Think Small?" In some cases big goals are intimidating and can discourage your efforts.

To think small ask yourself: What small step can I take today to move in the right direction? What is

something easy I can do right now?

How do you stay motivated to keep your goals? First, publicize your goals by sharing them with

people you trust. Select people you know, but not your spouse or partner, who will hold you

accountable. Second, identify the roadblocks. Roadblocks might be procrastination, burn out, time or

failing. Third, ask yourself what the worst case scenario is and what would really happen if you failed.

Know the #1 way to keep motivated. Apathy and lack of commitment are the top "derailers" to

achieving your goals. The number one way to keep motivated is to stay positive. Expect to achieve your

goals, even if you are delayed or go in a different direction. Celebrate big and small accomplishments.

Last year I shared some of my personal story on the Intentional Living radio broadcast about what to do

"When Work Isn't Working Out." Powerful words and intentional goals will help you stay motivated!

The San Diego Chapter #21 Trade Show was held January 29th at the Riverwalk from 5 – 7 pm, to recruit new members and give the committees a chance to showcase their activities. A scavenger hunt for the guests and prizes was fun and entertaining. The committee that won “Best of” was the Scholarship Committee and receives a $100.00 for the Scholarship fund. It was a great table display; you could tell a lot of work went into it. Thank you Marissa Jean Edward Lidyoff. The member that had the most guest’s tied between Ruth Lynch and Robyn McDaniel. We had 20 guests 20 members and 15 vendors.

Block Kids Committee: NAWIC San Diego’s Annual Block Kids Competition was held on Saturday December 6th at the offices of Associated Builders and Contractors, ABC. We are so grateful to ABC for allowing us to host the competition on their facility the same day as the Craft Championships are held. The day went very smooth and the kids had a great time getting to check out the games and prizes at the Championship side and then get started on building their projects. We had a total of 24 kids this year who participated. The winner was Mikayla Roscoe, winning a four pack to Legoland! She built a fireplace where all of her family and friends can gather around and enjoy spending time together. The crafts table was a huge hit and every participant received a goody bag filled with all sorts of fun toys and prizes at the end of the day. A huge thank you to all my volunteers and sponsors. I am so thankful that I have a great group who always wants to help out every year and make this event a huge success!

Report from CAD/Drafting & Scholarship Committee:

At this point in the year, our committee focus turns to fund-raising and sponsorships. Since we have some common members between the Scholarship and CAD/Drafting Committees, we are working on a joint fund-raising effort. Since we are both educational projects, it makes sense to join forces in this effort. Thanks to Karianne Tyler and the Marketing Committee for producing some excellent and very professional materials.

We are presently seeking financial sponsors for cash awards for the top three winners and other expenses of the CAD/Drafting competition and for the two (possibly three) scholarship awards. Our goal is to raise $5,000+. Also needed are drafting supplies, hats, t-shirts, pens, and other give-a-ways with your company's logo! We would like each CAD participant and their visiting classmates to leave the contest with a gift bag filled with merchandise. Levels of sponsorship that are available are as follows:
